Au beau milieu d’une grande ville il y avait un petit zoo, et dans ce zoo vivait un bébé éléphant, qui s’appelait Rosa. Le gardien du zoo adorait la petite Rosa et la gâtait de son mieux. Fascinés, les nombreux visiteurs aimaient la regarder engloutir d’un coup une douzaine de bananes. Rosa était bien traitée mais la compagnie d’autres éléphants lui manquait.

Un jour, après avoir nourri Rosa, le gardien oublia de cadenasser la porte de sa cage. Elle se retrouva bientôt hors du zoo ! Elle rencontra d’abord un marchand de glaces ambulant. A la vue de Rosa, celui-ci s’enfuit en courant. La petite éléphante curieuse passa sa trompe dans la glacière. C’était si froid, sucré et délicieux qu’elle engloutit tout son contenu d’une seule traite.

Rosa se mit à déambuler, à l’affût de quelqu’un lui ressemblant. Enfin, elle aperçut un troupeau d’éléphants sur un écran de télévision. « Des amis ! », se dit-elle et elle entra sans hésiter dans le magasin. Tous les clients s’enfuirent en dehors, la laissant seule à l’intérieur. Rosa tenta bien de parler aux éléphants à l’écran mais ne reçut aucune réponse. Désorientée et déçue, elle ressortit.

De retour dans la rue, elle vit un vendeur de noix de coco. « Youpi ! Un ballon ! Je vais bien m’amuser !, » s’écria-t-elle en lançant en l’air une noix de coco. Celle-ci voltigea de l’autre côté de la route et atterrit juste à côté d’un garçon qui jouait dans un square. Rosa traversa la route en courant pour récupérer son bien. Des voitures freinèrent, des bus klaxonnèrent, des conducteurs commencèrent à râler ! Rosa avait créé un bouchon ! Les gendarmes durent intervenir pour remettre de l’ordre. Le zoo fut alors informé.

Ignorant tout du grabuge qu’elle avait causé, Rosa courut dans le parc et s’arrêta devant le garçon qui lui sourit. Il se mit à rire et à la caresser. Rosa en fit de même avec sa trompe, toute contente de s’être fait un nouvel ami. C’est alors que le gardien du zoo arriva au square. A la vue de Rosa y évoluant librement, il comprit qu’elle ne serait jamais heureuse dans une cage.
 
Rosa fut transférée dans une forêt protégée loin de la ville, là où les éléphants vaquent librement à leur guise. Rosa y grandit fort heureuse. Dès lors, loin des barreaux d’une cage confinée, les visiteurs purent continuer de voir Rosa vivre parmi les arbres et engloutir des douzaines de bananes.

In the middle of a big city, there was a small zoo, and inside lived a baby elephant. Her name was Rosa. The zookeeper loved little Rosa very much and cared for her in every possible way. Many visitors came to see Rosa and watched in fascination as she ate a dozen bananas in one go. Rosa was well looked after, but she missed the company of other elephants.

One day, after feeding Rosa, the keeper forgot to lock the door of her cage. Soon she was out of the zoo! First, she came across an ice cream vendor standing by the roadside. He saw Rosa and ran away. The curious little elephant stuck her trunk into the icebox. Something tasted so cold, sweet and delicious that she simply gulped it all down.

Rosa kept moving about, her eyes searching for someone. Finally, inside a shop, she saw a herd of elephants on a television screen. “Friends!” she thought, and marched into the TV shop. Everybody inside the shop ran out, leaving her alone. Rosa tried talking to the elephants on the TV screen, but they didn’t reply. Confused and disappointed, she walked out.

Back on the street, she saw a coconut-seller, selling coconuts. “Wow, I’ve found a ball! It’s play time now!” she cried and kicked a coconut high into the air. It flew across the road and landed right beside a boy playing in the park. Rosa ran across the road, determined to get her coconut-ball. Cars screeched, buses honked, and drivers began to yell at each other. Rosa had created a traffic jam! The traffic police moved in to take control. The zoo was informed.
Ignoring the commotion around her, Rosa simply ran into the park. She stopped in front of the little boy, who was smiling at her. He giggled and patted the elephant. Rosa trumpeted back with excitement at her newfound friend. By now, the zookeeper had reached the park. Seeing Rosa in the open space of the park, he understood that she would never be happy in a cage.

The zoo transferred Rosa to a protected forest, away from the city, where many other elephants roamed freely. Rosa grew up very happily. Now, instead of watching Rosa behind bars in a cramped cage, visitors could see her among lots of trees, still gulping down dozens of bananas!
