Russian cardinal numerals
Russian numerals are devided into: cardinal, ordinal, collective, indefinite, double numerals.
Russian cardinal numerals designate the number of people or things, and answer the question Сколько?
The numerals один, два agree with the noun it is modifying by gender, number and case:
один брат, друг, стол, компьютер, билет два брата, друга, стола, компьютера, билета
одна сестра, подруга, проблема, касса, система, газета две сестры, подруги, проблемы, кассы, системы, газеты
одно пиво, вино, окно, море два пива, вина, окна, моря
All other numerals when used with the noun in are in the nominative but genitive is used to modify the noun that the numeral refer to:
три стула пять книг тридцать шесть окон
Russian genitive case of quantity is used to express a part of something, a few objects:
- Nominative singular is only used for 1, 21, 121, 1121...
один палец, одна собака, одно яблоко
- Genitive singular is used for 2-4, 22-24, 32-34...
два пальца, две собаки, два яблока
- Genitive plural is used for 5-20, 25-30, 35-40, 1125-1130...
пять пальцев, пять собак, пять яблок
The numerals from 5 to 20 and the numeral 30 change by cases.
To express complex numbers like 21, 22, etc, first we should name a bigger number and then the smaller one.
