    • пя́тница – пя́тый
  • среда́ – сре́дний (middle)
  • понеде́льник – по неде́ле (after Sunday)
🧐 Интере́сно! · Did you know?
  • Long ago неде́ля was the name of Sunday – the day when people «не де́лают» (don't work). So понеде́льник is the day «по неде́ле» – after Sunday.
  • Later неде́ля began to mean the whole week, and Sunday got a new name: воскресе́нье (Resurrection). In Ukrainian (неді́ля), Polish (niedziela) and Czech (neděle) Sunday is still the «do-nothing day».
  • An older word for the week: седми́ца – from семь (seven days).
  • Суббо́та comes from the Hebrew Shabbat, the day of rest – like sábado in Spanish and sabato in Italian.
  • In Russia the week starts on понеде́льник: the first column of a Russian calendar is Monday, not Sunday.
  • Семь пя́тниц на неде́ле – «seven Fridays in a week»: about someone who changes their mind all the time. That's the title of День 22!

По́зже неде́лю (Sunday) ста́ли называ́ть воскресе́нье – от сло́ва «воскресе́ние» Христа́.|Long ago, at the end of the 10th century, when Rus accepted Christianity and the Julian calendar, the week was called «седмица» (seven days).

The first day of the седмица was неделя (Sunday). It is the day when people «don't do» anything, that is, they don't work.

Monday is the day after неделя. Tuesday is the second day. Wednesday is the middle day. Thursday is the fourth day. Friday is the fifth day. Saturday comes from the Hebrew word «Shabbat», the day of rest.

Later, неделя (Sunday) began to be called воскресенье – from the word «resurrection» of Christ
