День 29 из 40: Чита́ть, чита́тель, чте́ние
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – чита́тель, чита́тельница, чте́ние. (Old friend: чита́ть, Курс 2.)
🗣️ Су́ффиксы дня · Suffixes of the day: чит-а́тель – a person · чт-е́ние – the action as a thing
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 28: you read something and said «Я чита́ю!» 📖 – and «Вот вход, а вот вы́ход.» 🚪
You remembered it – that is your first win today. ✅
- Tap and listen. Three gestures: open a book (to read) – a hand on your chest (the reader) – hold up the book (reading, the thing).
- One root чит / чт – and the suffixes make a verb, a person, a thing.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a picture – the dictionary opens.
👂 Listen first. Open a book – a hand on your chest – hold the book up.
- Ната́ша: Я чита́ю. 📖 Я – чита́тельница. 👩
- Ри́чард: Я то́же чита́ю. Я – чита́тель. 📰 📒
- Ната́ша: Чте́ние – э́то хорошо́! Я люблю́ чте́ние.
Ска́ффлз: (lying on the open book) Я люблю́ чита́тель!
- Ната́ша: Нет, Ска́ффлз! Чита́тель – э́то челове́к. Ты лю́бишь чте́ние.
Ска́ффлз: Нет. Я люблю́… лежа́ть на кни́ге! 😹 –
Сли́нки: (on Natasha's lap) Мур-р-р.
🌱 The seed of the day: -ение makes a thing from a verb: чита́ть → чте́ние · учи́ть → уче́ние («Уче́нье – свет», Курс 2) · петь → пе́ние (singing). Russians use these words a lot on signs and in books.
Say every line aloud with the three gestures. 📖🙋📚
Я чита́ю. 📖
Я – чита́тель / чита́тельница. 🙋
Я люблю́ чте́ние. 📚
Ска́ффлз лю́бит лежа́ть на кни́ге! 😹
- Pick up a book: «Я чита́ю. Я – чита́тель / чита́тельница.»
- What do you love? «Я люблю́ чте́ние.» – or «Я люблю́ пе́ние!» 🎵
- Find the root: чита́тель → чит · учи́тель → уч · писа́тель → пис.
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A verb, a person or a thing? 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
In что Russians say «што». But in чте́ние you say a real Ч + Т: «чте́ние». Only что (and its family: что́-то, ничего́ – «ничево́») has the «ш».
- Say: што (что) – then чте́ние – чте́-ни-е.
- And чита́ть – a soft Ч, a smile: «чи-та́ть».
- 30 seconds, every day. This is aerobics for the tongue.
Tomorrow, say how you feel this morning: «Я ра́д / ра́да!» 😊 – or «Мне гру́стно.» 😔 (День 30 has the words for joy). And once: «Я люблю́ чте́ние.» 📚
That is the first minute of День 30. You already know it – so День 30 starts with a win.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 30 · Ра́дость и ра́достный ▶
- Three gestures. The leader shows a gesture – the others say the word: 📖 open book «чита́ть!» · 🙋 hand on chest «чита́тель!» · 📚 book up «чте́ние!». Then with писа́ть: «писа́ть – писа́тель!» ✍️
- Who does it? «Кто чита́ет?» – «Чита́тель!» · «Кто пи́шет?» – «Писа́тель!» · «Кто у́чит?» – «Учи́тель!» · «Кто во́дит маши́ну?» – «Води́тель!» 🚗
- -ение. The leader says a verb – the others make the thing: «чита́ть!» – «чте́ние!» · «петь!» – «пе́ние!» · «учи́ть!» – «уче́ние!»
Who reads a lot knows a lot.
A saying every Russian schoolchild hears. 📚 🤸 Gesture: open a book on «чита́ет», tap your forehead on «зна́ет».
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words:
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Я чита́ю. Я – чита́тельница. – Я то́же чита́ю. Я – чита́тель. – Чте́ние – э́то хорошо́! Я люблю́ чте́ние. – Я люблю́ чита́тель! – Нет, Ска́ффлз! Чита́тель – э́то челове́к. Ты лю́бишь чте́ние. – Нет. Я люблю́… лежа́ть на кни́ге! – Мур-р-р.
I'm reading. I'm a reader (she). – I'm reading too. I'm a reader (he). – Reading is good! I love reading. – I love reader! (Scuffles's mistake: the person, not the thing) – No, Scuffles! A reader is a person. You love reading. – No. I love… lying on the book! – Purrr.
- one root чит / чт – three kinds of word:
- verb: чита́ть · person: чита́тель (-атель), чита́тельница · thing: чте́ние (-ение)
- -тель = English -er (reader, writer) · -ение = English -ing as a noun (reading)
- -ение words are «it» (оно́): чте́ние, пе́ние, уче́ние
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English does it the same way: read → reader → reading. Russian: чита́ть → чита́тель → чте́ние. Learn the two suffixes, and you can understand hundreds of words: води́тель (driver), пе́ние (singing), движе́ние (movement)… 📚
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- One root, three jobs. A verb, a person and a thing from one root – the student sees how Russian makes words (Nation 2013, word parts).
- An old verb. чита́ть is from Курс 2; only the suffixes are new.
- Three gestures, three kinds of word. The body separates action, person and thing: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles «loves the reader» – and in the end loves lying on the book. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
