День 30 из 40: Ра́дость и ра́достный
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 4 – ра́дость, ра́достный, грусть, гру́стный.
🗣️ Су́ффиксы дня · Suffixes of the day: ра́дость → ра́дост-ный · но́в-ый → но́в-ость – a thing ⇄ a describing word
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 29: how did you feel this morning? «Я ра́д / ра́да!» 😊 or «Мне гру́стно.» 😔 – and «Я люблю́ чте́ние.» 📚
You remembered it – that is your first win today. ✅
- Tap and listen. Open your arms wide on «ра́дость» (the joy itself) – a big smile on «ра́достный» (a joyful person).
- -ость makes a thing (a feeling, a quality) · -ный makes a describing word (an adjective).
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a picture – the dictionary opens.
но́в·ый new → но́в·ость news! · вкус taste → вку́с·н·ый tasty
👂 Listen first. Arms wide for the feeling, a smile or a sad face for the person.
- Ната́ша: Кака́я ра́дость! Ри́чард пришёл! 🤗
- Ри́чард: Я то́же ра́достный – я ра́д! 💐 📒
- Ната́ша: Ой, Сли́нки гру́стная. Грусть… 😔 (fish in the bowl) Тепе́рь Сли́нки ра́достная! 😺
Ска́ффлз: (jumping around) Я ра́дость! Я ра́дость!
- Ната́ша: Ты хо́чешь сказа́ть: я ра́достная. Ра́дость – э́то когда́ хорошо́.
Ска́ффлз: (on Natasha's lap) Нет. Я – ра́дость. Твоя́ ра́дость!
- Ната́ша: Пра́вда! Ты моя́ ра́дость! 😹❤️
🌱 The seed of the day: «Моя́ ра́дость!» – Russians really say it to someone they love, like «my darling». Scuffles was wrong… and right! 😄
Say every line aloud with the faces. 😊😔
Кака́я ра́дость! 🤗
Он ра́достный. Она́ ра́достная. 😊
Грусть. Он гру́стный. Она́ гру́стная. 😔
Ты моя́ ра́дость! ❤️
- How are you today? «Я ра́достный / ра́достная!» 😊 – or «Я гру́стный / гру́стная.» 😔
- Good news at home? «Кака́я ра́дость!» 🤗
- Make a thing from a describing word: но́вый → но́вость · and back: вкус → вку́сный.
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A thing (-ость) or a describing word (-ный)? He or she? 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
ра́достный – you write СТН, you say СН: «ра́досный». The Т is silent! 🤫 The same in гру́стный – «гру́сный», ме́стный – «ме́сный».
- Say: ра́до-сный – гру́-сный.
- But in ра́дость and грусть you hear Т: «грусть».
- 30 seconds, every day. This is aerobics for the tongue.
Tomorrow you build a whole word from parts like LEGO. Think about прихо́дит (День 19): what is the prefix, what is the root? 🧩 And once: «Я ра́достный / ра́достная!» 😊
That is the first minute of День 31. You already know it – so День 31 starts with a win.
- Faces. The leader makes a face – the others say the word: 😊 «ра́достный!» · 😔 «гру́стный!» · arms wide 🤗 «ра́дость!» · hands down «грусть!»
- Thing ⇄ describing word. One says a word, the next turns it round: «ра́дость!» – «ра́достный!» · «вкус!» – «вку́сный!» · «си́ла!» – «си́льный!» · «интере́с!» – «интере́сный!» · «но́вый!» – «но́вость!»
- He, she, they. Point and say: «Он ра́достный!» «Она́ ра́достная!» «Они́ ра́достные!» – in Natasha's colours 🔵🩷🟢.
Old age is no joy.
Russians say it with a smile when their back hurts! 😄 Two -ость words: ста́рость (from ста́рый) and ра́дость. 🤸 Gesture: hand on your back, bend like an old man… then straighten up and laugh.
-ный: ра́достный · вку́сный (вкус) · си́льный (си́ла) · интере́сный (интере́с)
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Кака́я ра́дость! Ри́чард пришёл! – Я то́же ра́достный – я ра́д! – Ой, Сли́нки гру́стная. Грусть… Тепе́рь Сли́нки ра́достная! – Я ра́дость! Я ра́дость! – Ты хо́чешь сказа́ть: я ра́достная. Ра́дость – э́то когда́ хорошо́. – Нет. Я – ра́дость. Твоя́ ра́дость! – Пра́вда! Ты моя́ ра́дость!
What a joy! Richard has come home! – I'm joyful too – I'm glad! – Oh, Slinky is sad. Sadness… Now Slinky is happy! – I'm joy! I'm joy! (Scuffles's mistake: she means «I'm joyful») – You mean: «I'm joyful». Joy is when things are good. – No. I am joy. Your joy! – That's true! You are my joy (my darling)!
- -ость – a feeling, a quality, a thing (she): ра́дость, но́вость, мо́лодость
- -ный – a describing word (adjective): ра́достный, гру́стный, вку́сный, си́льный
- endings: -ый (он) · -ая (она́) · -ое (оно́) · -ые (они́)
- СТН sounds «сн»: ра́достный, гру́стный
- «Моя́ ра́дость!» – my darling ❤️
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English: joy → joyful, sad → sadness – the same game with suffixes! Russian -ость ≈ English -ness / -ity (но́вость – newness → news) and -ный ≈ -ful / -y (вку́сный – tasty). 😊
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Turning words round. A thing ⇄ a describing word with one suffix – the student learns to make words, not only to learn them (Nation 2013, word parts).
- Feelings help memory. Words for joy and sadness with real faces and a real moment (Richard comes home, Slinky gets fish).
- Natasha's colours. -ый / -ая / -ые in the gender colours of Курс 2 – the endings are seen, not only heard.
- The cat makes the mistakes – and wins. Scuffles says «Я ра́дость!» – wrong grammar, but true love. 😹
