бы + the past form – always, even for today or tomorrow. The past form keeps Natasha's colours: я бы съел (he) · я бы съе́ла (she) · мы бы съе́ли (they). Never «бы» + бу́дет / съем.

ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English needs many words for a dream: «If I had a fish, I would eat it», «If I had had…, I would have…». Russian needs only бы + the past form – for today, yesterday and tomorrow! ✨ «Знал бы» = «if I had known» – one small word does it all.
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Built on Курс 2. The past forms (съел / съе́ла, был / была́) are old friends; бы is the only new thing (Krashen 1985, i + 1).
- Real and dream side by side. «Е́сли пойдёт» (День 34) next to «е́сли бы была́» – the contrast helps the student notice the difference (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
- Useful at once. «Я бы хоте́л(а)…» – the polite request in a café or a shop, from today.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «бы… бу́дет… съем» in her sleep – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
