Your homework from День 38: your photo as a child 📷 – «Э́то я. Я ма́ленький / ма́ленькая.» And: «Е́сли бы…» ✨
You remembered it – that is your first win today. ✅
- Tap and listen. Show it: когда́ я была́ ма́ленькой – your hand low, at the height of a small child 🧒 · тепе́рь – point down at the floor: «now, here!» 👇
- «Когда́ я был ма́леньким / была́ ма́ленькой» – learn it like a song: Russians say it every day.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a picture – the dictionary opens.
Когда́ я была́ ма́ленькой, я говори́ла по-ру́сски. 🩷
👂 Listen first. A hand low on «ма́леньк…», point down on «тепе́рь».
🌱 The seed of the day: «Когда́ я был(а) ма́леньким / ма́ленькой…» – now you can tell a story about your life. And a cat's life never changes! 😹
Say every line aloud – a hand low, then point down. 🧒👇
Когда́ я был ма́леньким, я … 🔵
Когда́ я была́ ма́ленькой, я … 🩷
А тепе́рь я … 👇
Когда́ Ска́ффлз была́ котёнком, она́ спала́ весь день. 😴
- Your story: «Когда́ я был ма́леньким / была́ ма́ленькой, я жил(а) в…» 🏠 · «…я люби́л(а)…» ❤️ · «…я говори́л(а)…»
- «А тепе́рь я…» 👇
- Show your child photo to somebody and tell them – in Russian! 📷
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Long ago or now? He or she? 📷👇
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
ма́ленький – the second Л is soft: the tongue touches the top of your mouth, a little «й» comes after it – «ма-лень-кий». The first Л is hard: «ма». 👅
- Say the pair: ма – ле · ма́ленький – ма́ленькой.
- The Ь makes Н soft too: «лень».
- 30 seconds, every day. This is aerobics for the tongue.
Tomorrow is the last day of Курс 3! 🎉 Say one long sentence with everything: «Я учу́ ру́сский, потому́ что…» 💬 And your child story once more: «Когда́ я был(а)…» 📷
That is the first minute of День 40. You already know it – so День 40 starts with a win.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 40 · Расправля́ем кры́лья! ▶
- Then and now. One says with a hand low 🧒: «Когда́ я был(а) ма́леньким / ма́ленькой, я люби́л(а) молоко́.» – then points down 👇: «А тепе́рь я люблю́ ко́фе!» ☕ The next one goes on.
- Guess the child. Everybody brings a child photo. Mix them up. «Э́то ты? Когда́ ты был ма́леньким…» 📷😄
- Cat story. Everybody tells a story like Scuffles: «Когда́ я была́ котёнком, я… А тепе́рь я то́же…!» 😹
A zolotnik is small, but precious.
A золотни́к was a tiny old Russian weight for gold. Small things – and small children – are precious. 💛 «мал» = ма́ленький. 🤸 Gesture: hold a tiny thing between two fingers… then press it to your heart.
Read the whole story aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know – and every long-sentence word of День 33–39 is here! Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words:
Ба́рсик – a very common Russian name for a cat. · мо́крый – wet · в тепле́ – in the warm.
котёнок – -ёнок = a baby animal (День 25): котёнок, щено́к, цыплёнок · many: котя́та 🐱🐱
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Э́то я. Когда́ я была́ ма́ленькой, я говори́ла по-ру́сски. – А когда́ я был ма́леньким, я не говори́л по-ру́сски. – А тепе́рь мы говори́м по-ру́сски! – Когда́ я был ма́ленький, я был котёнок! – Ты – она́: «Когда́ я была́ ма́ленькой, я была́ котёнком.» – Когда́ я была́ котёнком, я спала́ весь день. А тепе́рь… я то́же сплю весь день!
This is me. When I was little, I spoke Russian. – And when I was little, I didn't speak Russian. – And now we speak Russian! – When I was little (he), I was kitten! (Scuffles's mistake) – You are a «she»: «When I was little, I was a kitten.» – When I was a kitten, I slept all day. And now… I sleep all day too!
- когда́ + past – when (long ago)
- Когда́ я был ма́леньким (he) · была́ ма́ленькой (she) – learn it as it is 🎵
- я был(а́) котёнком – after был / была́ the word changes a little
- тепе́рь – now (after a change)
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English: «When I was little». Russian: «Когда́ я был ма́леньким» – the word «little» gets a new ending after был / была́. You will meet this ending (the instrumental case) again and again: «Я хочу́ стать врачо́м», «Он был учи́телем». For now – just enjoy the song of it. 🎵
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- A longer story with all the link words. Потому́ что, е́сли, что́бы, кото́рая, зна́ет где, е́сли бы – all in one story; reading them together shows how they work in real text (Nation 2013, extensive reading).
- Chunks, not grammar tables. «Когда́ я был ма́леньким» is learned as one piece – chunks come first, the case rule later (Lewis 1993, the lexical approach).
- Your own life. A child photo and «когда́ я был(а)…» – personal stories are remembered best (Rogers · Kuiper · Kirker 1977, the self-reference effect).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «я был ма́ленький… котёнок» – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
