Ы in дыша́ть and вы- – the sound English doesn't have.

• Say и – then pull your tongue back, as if a little ball sits on it: ы. Your lips don't move.

1. The balloon race. Everybody blows up a balloon: «Я ду́ю! Ду́ю, ду́ю…» – who is first? 🎈 (Careful – БАХ! 💥)
2. Feather football. A feather or a little piece of paper on the table – blow it to the other side: «Я ду́ю! Ты ду́ешь!» 🪶
3. Slow and fast. «Вдыха́ем…» very slowly, «выдыха́ем!» very fast – then the other way round. 😄

This is the oldest aerobics in the world – breathing.

• дыша́ть – family 2 (-ишь), the stress jumps: дышу́, ды́шишь, ды́шит, ды́шим, ды́шите, ды́шат.
• дуть – family 1 (-ешь): ду́ю, ду́ешь, ду́ет, ду́ем, ду́ете, ду́ют.
• вдыха́ем / выдыха́ем – say them as one piece for now.
• Listen to ты – and you know the family.

ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).

ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.

The sign is only a help for learners. Russian books don't print it, and you don't write it.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?

😄 Для тех, кто говори́т по-англи́йски · For English speakers

Russian is a breathing language: «Не дыши́!» says the doctor (don't breathe!), «Дыши́ глу́бже!» (breathe deeper!) – you will hear it tomorrow, at the doctor's. 🩺
English in-hale and ex-hale = Russian в-дыха́ть and вы-дыха́ть – the same idea, other little pieces. 😄

🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way

• The body learns the word. Arms up on «вдыха́ем», down on «выдыха́ем», a real balloon on «ду́ю» – a word done with the body stays longer: Macedonia · Knösche 2011. This is Natasha's Language Aerobics at its purest.
• Two families side by side. дышу́ (-ишь) and ду́ю (-ешь) sound alike but belong to different families – telling them apart trains the rule of День 8 (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
• Prefixes as chunks. в- and вы- are only heard today; the system of prefixes is for Курс 3, after the aspect (Natalia's order, 6 Nov 2026).
• The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «дышу́ю». The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
