🙌 Today's words: СЕМЬЯ́ · БРАТ · СЕСТРА́ · МУЖ · ЖЕНА́ · У МЕНЯ́ ЕСТЬ
Э́то моя́ семья́.
У Ната́ши есть муж. Его́ зову́т Ри́чард.
У Ри́чарда есть жена́. Её зову́т Ната́ша.
У них есть ко́шки и ры́бки. 🐈🐟
А у вас? У вас есть брат и́ли сестра́?
брат → бра́тья – brothers (a strange plural!) · English brother – the same old word 🤝
сестра́ → сёстры – sisters · English sister – the same old word too
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
This is my family. This is my husband, Richard. I have a husband! – And I have a wife – Natasha! – Richard, do you have a brother? And a sister? – Who has a cat? We have cats: Slinky and Scuffles! And little fish! – At I there is Slinky! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! I have Slinky. – Grrr… I have Slinky. She is my sister! – Miaow?!
- у + меня́ / тебя́ / него́ / неё / нас / вас / них + есть = I have, you have…
- У меня́ есть брат. – I have a brother.
- У вас есть кот? – Есть! – Do you have a cat? – I do!
- After у a name changes too: у Ната́ши, у Ри́чарда (Курс 1, День 35).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
Russian has no word «have» for this: «У меня́ есть кот» = «at me is a cat». Irish and Welsh say it the same way – «the cat is at me». 🐈
брат – brother, сестра́ – sister – a thousand years ago they were the same word. English and Russian are distant cousins. 🤝
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Real family, real sentences. «У меня́ есть брат» about the student's own family is a sentence that matters to them – personal input is remembered better.
- A chunk, not a table. «у меня́ есть» is learned as one piece; меня́, тебя́, него́ are the «у»-forms the student has already met with names in Курс 1 (у Ри́чарда, у окна́).
- Words that look like English. брат – brother, сестра́ – sister: noticing the old family link makes the new words easier to keep.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «у я есть». The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
