Stand up! Your homework from День 24 – walk the time line: «Вчера́ я …, сего́дня я …, за́втра я бу́ду …» 👈👇👉 And the riddle: «Что бы́ло за́втра и бу́дет вчера́?» – Сего́дня!
You know it – that is your first win today. Today: a fairy tale everybody in Russia knows. 🥕
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: who pulls the turnip? Who helps at the end? 👂
- Every time you hear тя́нут-потя́нут – pull with both hands, slowly, a long movement. 〰️
- When you hear вы́тянули! – clap your fist on your palm: a stamp. Done! ✅
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen. The people and animals of the tale:
ре́пка – a little turnip (ре́па + -ка, like но́сик from нос).
- тя́нут-потя́нут – they pull and pull 〰️ – it goes on and on: doing.
- вы́тянуть не мо́гут – they can't pull it out – not done yet!
- вы́тянули! – they pulled it out ✅ – done. Жу́чка is a dog's name, like «Rover».
👂 Listen first. Pull slowly 〰️ on «тя́нут», stamp ✅ on «вы́тянули».
- Ри́чард (дед): Тя́нет-потя́нет… вы́тянуть не мо́жет! – Ба́бка! Помоги́!
- Ната́ша (ба́бка): Тя́нут-потя́нут… вы́тянуть не мо́гут!
Сли́нки (ко́шка – she lies down on the turnip): … 😴
Ска́ффлз (pulls the tail, the turnip doesn't move): Я вы́тянула!
- Ната́ша: Нет, Ска́ффлз! Ты тя́нешь. Ты ещё не вы́тянула! – Ска́ффлз: Р-р-р… 😾
- The mouse comes – one more pull… Все: Вы́тянули ре́пку! ✅🎉
🌱 The seed of the day: тя́нут – they are pulling (it goes on) · вы́тянули – they pulled it out (finished). Two verbs for one action – this is the whole secret of the next eight days.
Say every line aloud – pull slowly, then stamp. 〰️ ✅
Тя́нет-потя́нет… вы́тянуть не мо́жет! 〰️
Тя́нут-потя́нут… вы́тянуть не мо́гут! 〰️
Я тяну́. Ты тя́нешь. Он тя́нет.
Мы тя́нем. Вы тя́нете. Они́ тя́нут.
Вы́тянули ре́пку! ✅
- Pull a door handle or a friend's hand: «Я тяну́… тяну́…» 〰️ – then let go: «Вы́тянул(а)!» ✅
- Tell the tale with your fingers: «дед, ба́бка, вну́чка, Жу́чка, ко́шка, мы́шка» – one finger for each.
- Ask someone: «Ты тя́нешь?» – «Да, я тяну́!»
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Is it still going on – or finished? A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
тяну́ть – the loud syllable jumps: тяну́ – but тя́нешь, тя́нет, тя́нут.
- Only «я» is loud at the end: тянУ́ 👏 – then back to the start: ТЯ́нешь 👏
- вы́тянуть – the «done» verbs with вы- are always loud on ВЫ́: вы́тянули! ✅
- 30 seconds, every day – the tale helps you remember.
Tomorrow, with your hands: pull slowly «Тя́нут-потя́нут…» 〰️ – then stamp «Вы́тянули!» ✅
That is the first minute of День 26. You already know it – so День 26 starts with a win.
The fourth part of Курс 2 has begun – doing or done. See you tomorrow: День 26 · Де́лаю – сде́лал! ▶
- Play the tale. One person is the turnip, sitting on the floor. The others line up and pull: «Тя́нут-потя́нут… вы́тянуть не мо́гут!» – one more joins each time. The smallest is the мы́шка – and then everybody falls: «Вы́тянули!» 😄
- Long or stamp? Somebody says a verb – «тя́нет!» → a long slow pull 〰️ · «вы́тянул!» → a stamp ✅.
- Who is next? «Дед за ре́пку, ба́бка за де́дку…» – say the chain faster and faster. 🐭
The Giant Turnip – the whole tale with a video. Listen for «тя́нут-потя́нут» and «вы́тянули».
Today's tale. Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
One man in a field is no army. (Alone you can't do it.)
The grandfather alone – вы́тянуть не мо́жет. Everybody together, even the mouse – вы́тянули! 🐭 🤸 Gesture: one finger up on «оди́н», then shake your head on «не во́ин».
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know – or one from the tale. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words: РЕ́ПКА · ТЯ́НУТ · ВЫ́ТЯНУЛИ · ДЕД · БА́БКА
Дед тя́нет ре́пку. Тя́нет-потя́нет… 〰️
Ба́бка за де́дку, де́дка за ре́пку.
Ко́шка спит. Ска́ффлз тя́нет. Мы́шка помога́ет.
Вы́тянули ре́пку! ✅
тяну́ть → вы́тянуть – pull out (done) · потяну́ть – give a pull · тя́га – a pull, a draught 💨
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Тя́нет-потя́нет… вы́тянуть не мо́жет! Ба́бка! Помоги́! – Тя́нут-потя́нут… вы́тянуть не мо́гут! – Я вы́тянула! – Нет, Ска́ффлз! Ты тя́нешь. Ты ещё не вы́тянула! – Р-р-р… – Вы́тянули ре́пку!
He pulls and pulls… he can't pull it out! Granny! Help! – They pull and pull… they can't pull it out! – I've pulled it out! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! You are pulling. You haven't pulled it out yet! – Grrr… – They've pulled out the turnip!
- тяну́ть – I pull, I am pulling (it goes on): тяну́, тя́нешь, тя́нет, тя́нем, тя́нете, тя́нут.
- вы́тянуть – pull it out (finished, the result is there): вы́тянул, вы́тянула, вы́тянули.
- One action – two verbs: «doing» 〰️ and «done» ✅. Tomorrow this gets a name.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
«The Giant Turnip» is the first tale Russian children hear – and its chain «ба́бка за де́дку, де́дка за ре́пку» is a game, like «The House that Jack Built». 🏠
Two verbs for one action – English does it with words: pull – pull out, eat – eat up, read – read through. Russian does it with a small piece at the front: тяну́ть – вы́тянуть. 😮
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- A tale everybody knows. A story with a strong rhythm and a chain is easy to remember and to act out; the verbs come with a picture in your head.
- Hear it before the rule. Today the two verbs are only heard and done with the body; the ★ rule comes tomorrow (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
- Two gestures for two meanings. A long movement for «doing», a stamp for «done» – the body learns the difference first.
- The cat makes the mistakes. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
