День 3 из 32: Мы чита́ем, они́ чита́ют
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 5 – газе́та (back from Курс 1), журна́л, письмо́, мы, они́.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: чита́ть – мы чита́ем → они́ чита́ют.
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 2. Take a book or a newspaper: «Я чита́ю.» 📖 Point at someone: «Он рабо́тает.» 👉 Ask the screen: «Что вы де́лаете?» 🫵
You know it – that is your first win today. Today two more people join: мы (we) and они́ (they).
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: what does Natasha read? What does Richard read? And the cats? 👂
- Listen to the end: мы чита́ем – они́ чита́ют.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
Я + Ри́чард = мы. 👫 Сли́нки + Ска́ффлз = они́. 🐈🐈
👂 Listen first. Circle on «мы» 👫, both hands over there on «они́» 🐈🐈.
(she sits on the letter) ✉️ – Ри́чард: Сли́нки, э́то письмо́! Я чита́ю письмо́!
🌱 The seed of the day: мы -ем · они́ -ют – two new ends. Now you have heard five of six. Just hear it and point. The rule comes tomorrow, on День 4.
Say every line aloud, with the gestures.
Э́то газе́та. 📰 Э́то журна́л. Э́то письмо́. ✉️
Мы чита́ем. 👫 Мы рабо́таем.
Они́ чита́ют. 🐈🐈 Они́ зна́ют.
Что они́ де́лают? – Они́ чита́ют газе́ту! 😄
А вы? Вы чита́ете? – Я чита́ю письмо́.
- Sit next to someone (or a teddy bear). Draw the circle: «Мы чита́ем.» 👫
- Point at two people or two cats: «Они́ рабо́тают.» or «Они́ ничего́ не де́лают!» 😄
- Show a newspaper, a magazine, a letter: «Э́то газе́та. Э́то журна́л. Э́то письмо́.»
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is not a mistake – it is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Ы – the sound English doesn't have. It is the sound of мы.
- Say и (like ee), smile – then pull your tongue back, keep the lips flat: ы.
- ми – мы – ми – мы. Two different words: ми is a note (do-re-mi), мы is we.
- A trick: say «u» with a smile – you are close. 😄 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow, sit next to someone (or the cat) and say: «Мы чита́ем.» 👫 Then point at two people (or two cats): «Они́ чита́ют.» 🐈🐈
That is the first minute of День 4. You already know it – so День 4 starts with a win.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 4 · Ска́ффлз, ты зна́ешь? ▶
- Gesture → word. 📰 газе́та · 📖 журна́л · ✉️ письмо́ · ⭕ мы · 🙌 они́.
- Five persons, five points. 👉 он чита́ет · 👆 я чита́ю · 🫵 вы чита́ете · ⭕ мы чита́ем · 🙌 они́ чита́ют. Point and say, faster and faster.
- Swap the verb. The same five points with рабо́тать, then with знать.
Remembering a word from the gesture works better than reading it again.
We read. They read. And you? – today's lesson in another shape, and a peek at tomorrow: ты.
Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
No one knows – a big shrug and знать once more: who knows? Nobody!
You need your shoulders. 😄 Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
Learning is light, and no learning is darkness.
Russians say it to children who don't want to read. не- in front = not. 🤸 Gesture: open both hands up like a lamp on «свет», cover your eyes on «тьма».
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words:
журна́л – a magazine · журнали́ст – a journalist
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Я чита́ю газе́ту. – А я чита́ю журна́л. – Мы чита́ем! – А Сли́нки и Ска́ффлз? Что они́ де́лают? – Они́ на газе́те. Они́ то́же чита́ют! – Да! Мы чита́ют! – Нет, Ска́ффлз! Мы чита́ем. Они́ чита́ют. – Р-р-р… Мы чита́ем! – Мя́у! – Сли́нки, э́то письмо́! Я чита́ю письмо́!
I am reading the newspaper. – And I am reading a magazine. – We are reading! – And Slinky and Scuffles? What are they doing? – They are on the newspaper. They are reading too! – Yes! We reads! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! We read. They read. – Grrr… We read! – Miaow! – Slinky, that's a letter! I am reading the letter!
- мы = we (я + someone). они́ = they (he + she, the cats, the people over there).
- мы чита́ем · они́ чита́ют.
- So far: я чита́ю · он чита́ет · мы чита́ем · вы чита́ете · они́ чита́ют. One person is still missing – tomorrow!
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English: we read, they read – the verb doesn't change. Russian: мы чита́ем, они́ чита́ют – the end tells you who it is, even without мы or они́. 👂
МЫ looks like English MbI – but it is one sound, Ы. 😄
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- мы and они́ after он, я, вы. Natasha's order: the polite forms the student needs in real life first, then the plural, ты last. «мы» needs no switch of point of view – the student is inside it.
- A word comes back. газе́та is an old friend from Курс 1, now in a new place («чита́ю газе́ту») – a word met again after a gap is remembered much better: Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025.
- Five of six forms heard before the rule. The ★ rule moment on День 4 comes after the forms have been met 3–4 times as chunks.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «мы чита́ют», Natasha corrects the cat – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
