День 4 из 32: Ска́ффлз, ты зна́ешь?
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 2 – ты, ничего́ не зна́ю.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: знать – ты зна́ешь. ★ One verb – six forms: -ю -ешь -ет -ем -ете -ют
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 3. Draw the circle round you and your neighbour: «Мы чита́ем.» ⭕ Both hands over there: «Они́ чита́ют.» 🙌
You know it – that is your first win today. Today the last person comes: ты. Then you have all six.
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: where is the fish? Who knows? Who says she knows nothing? 🐟
- Listen to the new end: ты зна́ешь.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
- ты – to a friend, a child, a cat, your family. вы – to everyone else, and to many people. When in doubt, say вы – it is polite.
- Russians say ничего́ не – two «no»s: I don't know nothing – and in Russian that is right! 😄 (ничего́ – you know it from Курс 1.)
👂 Listen first. Point gently on «ты» – close to you. 🫳
- Ната́ша: Где ры́ба? Ры́бы нет! 😮
- Ната́ша: Сли́нки, ты зна́ешь, где ры́ба? –
Сли́нки: Мя́у? (no)
- Ната́ша: Ска́ффлз, а ты? Ты зна́ешь?
Ска́ффлз: Я ничего́ не зна́ет! 🤷 (the fish tail behind her)
- Ната́ша: Нет, Ска́ффлз! Я ничего́ не зна́ю. – Ска́ффлз: Р-р-р… Я ничего́ не зна́ю. 😾
- Ри́чард: Ната́ша, я зна́ю, где ры́ба! 😄 Ска́ффлз зна́ет! – Ска́ффлз: Мя́у… 🐟
★ One verb – six forms. 30 seconds. You have heard all six. Now look:
| я 👆 | зна́ю · чита́ю · де́лаю |
| ты 🫳 | зна́ешь · чита́ешь · де́лаешь |
| он, она́ 👉 | зна́ет · чита́ет · де́лает |
| мы ⭕ | зна́ем · чита́ем · де́лаем |
| вы 🫵 | зна́ете · чита́ете · де́лаете |
| они́ 🙌 | зна́ют · чита́ют · де́лают |
Take away -ть, add the end: знать → зна- → зна́ю, зна́ешь… Every verb you know works like this: знать, де́лать, чита́ть, рабо́тать. Scuffles still mixes them up – you don't. 😄
Count on six fingers – one finger for each person. Say it aloud, with the pointing.
Я зна́ю. 👆 Ты зна́ешь. 🫳 Он зна́ет. 👉
Мы зна́ем. ⭕ Вы зна́ете. 🫵 Они́ зна́ют. 🙌
Ска́ффлз, ты зна́ешь, где ры́ба? 🐟
Я ничего́ не зна́ю! 🤷
Я чита́ю, ты чита́ешь, он чита́ет, мы чита́ем, вы чита́ете, они́ чита́ют.
- Ask your cat, your dog or your teddy: «Ты зна́ешь, где ры́ба?» 🐟 – answer for it with a shrug: «Я ничего́ не зна́ю!» 🤷
- Ask the screen – it is polite: «Вы зна́ете?»
- Six fingers, six forms: я зна́ю … они́ зна́ют. Then with рабо́тать.
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Look only at the end of the verb. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Ш in зна́ешь is deeper than English sh.
- Lips forward a little, like a kiss 😗, the tongue pulled back – шшш. Like the sea, or «quiet!» to a child.
- зна́ешь – the Ь at the end changes nothing here: Ш stays hard. Just зна́-ешь.
- 30 seconds, every day. This is aerobics for the tongue.
Tomorrow, count the six forms of знать on six fingers – я зна́ю, ты зна́ешь, он зна́ет, мы зна́ем, вы зна́ете, они́ зна́ют – and ask someone at home (or the cat): «Ты зна́ешь?»
That is the first minute of День 5. You already know it – so День 5 starts with a win.
- Six persons, six points. 👆 я · 🫳 ты · 👉 он · ⭕ мы · 🫵 вы · 🙌 они́. Point – say the person – then the verb: «⭕ мы чита́ем!»
- Mixed order. Somebody points – you say the form: 🙌 «они́ рабо́тают!» · 🫳 «ты де́лаешь!» · 👆 «я зна́ю!»
- Ты or вы? Show a photo: a child – «Ты зна́ешь?»; a doctor – «Вы зна́ете?»; the cat – «Ты зна́ешь?» 😄
Your hands learn the persons before your head does.
Only the one who does nothing makes no mistakes.
Scuffles makes mistakes every day – so she does something! 😄 «ничего́ не де́лает» – the two «no»s of today. 🤸 Gesture: wag your finger on «не ошиба́ется», then a big lazy shrug on «ничего́ не де́лает».
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words:
«Ничего́!» also means never mind!
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Где ры́ба? Ры́бы нет! Сли́нки, ты зна́ешь, где ры́ба? – Мя́у? – Ска́ффлз, а ты? Ты зна́ешь? – Я ничего́ не зна́ет! – Нет, Ска́ффлз! Я ничего́ не зна́ю. – Р-р-р… Я ничего́ не зна́ю. – Ната́ша, я зна́ю, где ры́ба! Ска́ффлз зна́ет! – Мя́у…
Where is the fish? The fish is gone! Slinky, do you know where the fish is? – Miaow? – Scuffles, and you? Do you know? – I knows nothing! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! I know nothing. – Grrr… I know nothing. – Natasha, I know where the fish is! Scuffles knows! – Miaow…
- ★ One verb – six forms. Take away -ть, add: я -ю · ты -ешь · он, она́ -ет · мы -ем · вы -ете · они́ -ют.
- знать, де́лать, чита́ть, рабо́тать – all the same.
- ты – friend, child, family, cat. вы – everybody else, and many people.
- ничего́ не + verb: Я ничего́ не зна́ю.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English once had ты too: thou knowest = ты зна́ешь. Thou was for friends and family, you for others – just like Russian today. 😄 That is why our picture of ты is called Thou.
Six forms sound like a lot – but you already said all six today without thinking. 🎉
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- The rule comes after the forms. The student has met зна́ет, зна́ю, зна́ете (День 1), the same ends with three verbs (День 2), мы and они́ (День 3) – only now the 30-second rule. Noticing works best when the forms are already familiar (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
- ты last. Natasha's order: polite вы first because it is safe with strangers; ты comes when the student is ready – and it comes with the cat, where it is natural.
- Look at the end. In the tap quiz only the end of the verb gives the answer – structured input (VanPatten · processing instruction).
- Six fingers. Counting the forms on the fingers ties each person to a movement – a word with a gesture stays longer: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «я ничего́ не зна́ет» – and has eaten the fish. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
