День 7 из 32: Я хочу́, ты хо́чешь
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 2 – хоте́ть, мочь.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: хоте́ть – я хочу́, ты хо́чешь… · мочь – я могу́, ты мо́жешь… (they break the rules!)
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 6. Hand on your heart: «Ты меня́ лю́бишь?» ❤️ And one thing you love: «Я люблю́ …»
You know it – that is your first win today. And «хочу́» you know from Курс 1: «Я хочу́ чай». Today all six forms.
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: who wants the fish? Who wants to sleep? What does Richard want? 👂
- Listen to the loud syllable: хочу́ – хо́чешь. It jumps! 🦘
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
- хочу́ + a thing: Я хочу́ ры́бу. 🐟 хочу́ + a verb: Я хочу́ спать. 😴
- могу́ + a verb: Я могу́ говори́ть! 💪 – I can talk!
👂 Listen first. Reach and pull on «хоч…», fists up on «мог…, мо́ж…». 🤲💪
🌱 The seed of the day: two verbs that don't follow the families of День 4 and 6. They are the most used verbs of all – so you hear them every day and learn them by ear.
Say every line aloud, with the gestures.
Я хочу́. 🤲 Ты хо́чешь. Он хо́чет.
Мы хоти́м. Вы хоти́те. Они́ хотя́т.
Я могу́. 💪 Ты мо́жешь. Она́ мо́жет.
Мы мо́жем. Вы мо́жете. Они́ мо́гут.
Я хочу́ спать. 😴 Я могу́ говори́ть по-ру́сски!
- Hold the fish to the cat (or anyone): «Ты хо́чешь ры́бу?» 🐟 – answer for her: «Хочу́!»
- Put your head on the pillow: «Я хочу́ спать.» 😴
- Fists up: «Я могу́ говори́ть по-ру́сски!» 💪
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is not a mistake – it is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
The loud syllable jumps in these two verbs:
- хочу́ – хо́чешь – хо́чет – хоти́м. Clap on the loud syllable! 👏
- могу́ – мо́жешь – мо́гут. And the г becomes ж: могу́ → мо́жешь.
- Say «хочу́» with a jump forward, «хо́чешь» with a step back. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning, say one thing you want and one thing you can: «Я хочу́ чай.» ☕ «Я могу́ говори́ть по-ру́сски!» 💪
That is the first minute of День 8 – the review day. You already know it – so День 8 starts with a win.
- «Хочу́ – могу́»: reach and pull 🤲 «Я хочу́ танцева́ть!» – fists up 💪 «Я могу́ танцева́ть!» – then dance a step. 💃 Same with рисова́ть ✏️, чита́ть 📖, спать 😴.
- Ask around. Point and ask: 🫳 «Ты хо́чешь чай?» · 🫵 «Вы хоти́те ко́фе?» · 👉 «Он мо́жет говори́ть по-ру́сски?»
- The jump. Jump forward on хочу́, step back on хо́чешь. 🦘
When you move, you can't fall asleep – and the words stay. 😄
My husband will learn Russian one day – at the YouTube studio with Richard. He can say only «да», «нет», «спина́ боли́т» – but he wants to! Where are we? In London. 😄
Listen for хочу́. Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
To want means to be able. – Where there's a will, there's a way.
Both of today's verbs – and Richard is the proof: he wants to speak Russian, so he can. 💪 🤸 Gesture: reach and pull on «хоте́ть», fists up on «мочь».
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words:
мочь – can · мо́жно – it is allowed («Мо́жно?» – May I?) · по́мощь – help · мощь – power 💪
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Scuffles, do you want the fish? – I want it! I want it! – And Slinky? Slinky doesn't want the fish. She wants to sleep. – Miaow… – Natasha, I want to speak Russian! – You can! You can speak! – Yes! I can! – Slinky and Scuffles… they wants fish! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! Not «khochut» – khotyat. They want fish. – Grrr… We want fish!
- хоте́ть – mixed: хочу́, хо́чешь, хо́чет (like family 1, with ч) · хоти́м, хоти́те, хотя́т (like family 2).
- мочь – могу́, мо́жешь, мо́жет, мо́жем, мо́жете, мо́гут: г for я and они́, ж for the rest.
- Both + a verb: Я хочу́ спать. Я могу́ говори́ть.
- Just learn them by ear – you will hear them every day.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English has its rule-breakers too: I can – he can (no -s!), I will – he will. The most used verbs in every language are the strangest – because people use them so often that they wear smooth like old coins. 🪙
мочь is the cousin of English might and may. 💪
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- The irregular verbs after the rules. After the two families (День 4 and 6) the student can see what is «strange» in хоте́ть and мочь – the exception makes sense only when the rule is known.
- Very common words first. хочу́ and могу́ are among the most frequent Russian verbs in speech – the student hears them every day, so they are learned as chunks («Я хочу́…», «Мо́жно?»).
- A word comes back. «Я хочу́» was a chunk in Курс 1; today it grows into six forms – a word met again in a new form is remembered better: Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «они́ хо́чут» – the classic mistake. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
