День 6 из 32: Ри́чард говори́т!
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – говори́ть, смотре́ть, люби́ть.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: говори́ть – я говорю́, ты говори́шь, он говори́т… ★ Two families: -ешь / -ишь
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 5. Show your drawing: «Я рису́ю ко́шку.» ✏️ One dance step: «Я танцу́ю!» 💃
You know it – that is your first win today. Today Richard talks – and a second family of verbs comes in.
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: who talks a lot? Who looks at whom? Who loves Richard – and why? 🥣
- Listen to the end with ты: not -ешь, but -ишь: говори́шь, лю́бишь.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
- Я говорю́ по-ру́сски – I speak Russian. 🇷🇺 (по-ру́сски – you know it from Курс 1.)
- смотре́ть на + who/what: Ска́ффлз смо́трит на Ри́чарда. 👀
- Ты меня́ лю́бишь? – Do you love me? – меня́ = me (Курс 1: «Меня́ зову́т…»).
👂 Listen first. Hand on the heart on every «лю́б…». ❤️
- Ната́ша: Ри́чард говори́т. Он говори́т и говори́т! 🗣️
- Ната́ша: Ри́чард, ты говори́шь по-ру́сски! – Ри́чард: Да! Я говорю́! 😎
- Ната́ша: Ска́ффлз смо́трит на Ри́чарда. 👀🥣
- Ри́чард: Ска́ффи, ты меня́ лю́бишь? –
Ска́ффлз: Мя́у! (the bowl is empty)
Ска́ффлз: Я любю́ ры́бу!
- Ната́ша: Нет, Ска́ффлз! Я люблю́. – Ска́ффлз: Р-р-р… Я люблю́ ры́бу. 😾🐟
Сли́нки: Мя-а-а-у! Кто меня́ лю́бит? – Ната́ша: Я тебя́ люблю́, Сли́нки! ❤️
★ Two families. 30 seconds. Listen to ты: -ешь or -ишь?
| 1 · -ешь (День 4) | 2 · -ишь (today) | |
|---|---|---|
| я 👆 | зна́ю | говорю́ |
| ты 🫳 | зна́ешь | говори́шь |
| он, она́ 👉 | зна́ет | говори́т |
| мы ⭕ | зна́ем | говори́м |
| вы 🫵 | зна́ете | говори́те |
| они́ 🙌 | зна́ют | говоря́т |
Family 2 has и everywhere in the middle – and -ят for они́. Most verbs in -ить go here: говори́ть, люби́ть – and смотре́ть too. люби́ть adds an л for я: люблю́ – only for я! 😄
Say every line aloud, with the gestures.
Ри́чард говори́т. 🗣️ Я говорю́. Вы говори́те по-ру́сски!
Ска́ффлз смо́трит на Ри́чарда. 👀
Ты меня́ лю́бишь? ❤️ – Мя́у!
Я люблю́ ры́бу. 🐟 Мы лю́бим ко́шек. Они́ лю́бят ры́бу.
Я говорю́, ты говори́шь, он говори́т, мы говори́м, вы говори́те, они́ говоря́т.
- Hold the bowl and ask the cat (or anyone): «Ты меня́ лю́бишь?» ❤️ – answer for her: «Мя́у!»
- Say what you love: «Я люблю́ …» – чай, ры́бу, ко́шек, Ри́чарда… 😄
- Tell the screen: «Я говорю́ по-ру́сски!» – yes, you do.
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Look at the end of the verb. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
люблю́ has two soft Л's. A soft Л is said with the middle of the tongue up, like l in million.
- ля – лю – ли. Smile a little.
- люб-лю́ – slowly, then fast: люблю́!
- Compare the hard Л of Курс 1: ла́па, стол – the tongue tip up, the back of the tongue down. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow, before you give the cat (or yourself) breakfast, ask: «Ты меня́ лю́бишь?» ❤️ And say one thing you love: «Я люблю́ …»
That is the first minute of День 7. You already know it – so День 7 starts with a win.
- Gesture → word. 🗣️ говорю́ · 👀 смотрю́ · ❤️ люблю́ · 💃 танцу́ю · 📖 чита́ю.
- Family 1 or family 2? Somebody says a verb with ты – you show one finger (-ешь) or two fingers (-ишь): «ты зна́ешь» ☝️ · «ты говори́шь» ✌️ · «ты рису́ешь» ☝️ · «ты лю́бишь» ✌️.
- Six persons with говори́ть. 👆 🫳 👉 ⭕ 🫵 🙌 – point and say, faster and faster.
Your hands learn the families before your head does.
I love you – a short song: «Я люблю́ тебя́, люблю́ тебя́, я тебя́ люблю́!» Sing the chorus with it.
Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
Are you my favourite – or your own? – an online lesson with Natasha's student: я говорю́, ты говори́шь, мы говори́м – and the internet freezes at the best moment! 😄
Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
Hurry – and you'll make people laugh. – Haste makes waste.
Two ты-forms of family 2: поспеши́шь, насмеши́шь – and люде́й from День 1. Richard talks too fast… 😄 🤸 Gesture: run on the spot on «поспеши́шь», then laugh and point on «насмеши́шь».
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words: ГОВОРЮ́ · ГОВОРИ́ТЕ · СМО́ТРИТ · ЛЮБЛЮ́ · ЛЮ́БИШЬ
Ри́чард говори́т и говори́т.
Ска́ффлз смо́трит на Ри́чарда.
Ска́ффи, ты меня́ лю́бишь? – Мя́у!
Я люблю́ ры́бу. Мы лю́бим ко́шек.
Вы говори́те по-ру́сски! Молоде́ц! 🎉
говори́ть – to speak · разгово́р – a talk · погово́рка – a saying 🦉
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Richard is talking. He talks and talks! Richard, you speak Russian! – Yes! I speak! – Scuffles is looking at Richard. – Scuffy, do you love me? – Miaow! – I lov fish! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! I love. – Grrr… I love fish. – Miaaaow! Who loves me? – I love you, Slinky!
- ★ Two families of verbs. Listen to ты:
- 1 · -ешь: зна́ю, зна́ешь, зна́ет, зна́ем, зна́ете, зна́ют
- 2 · -ишь: говорю́, говори́шь, говори́т, говори́м, говори́те, говоря́т
- Family 2 = most verbs in -ить (говори́ть, люби́ть) and some in -еть (смотре́ть).
- люби́ть → люблю́ – an extra л, only for я.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
люби́ть and English love are old cousins – and so is German lieben and Liebe. ❤️
«Ты меня́ лю́бишь?» – Russians use it with cats, children and husbands. Richard asks it every evening – and Scuffles always says yes before dinner. 😼
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- The second family next to the first. Forms that look alike are easier to tell apart when you see them side by side and notice the difference (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
- A real moment from home. Richard really asks Scuffles «Ты меня́ лю́бишь?» before her food – a story from life is remembered better than an invented one, and it brings ты in where it is natural.
- Remember first, then check. The tap quiz asks for the ending before you see it – retrieval practice: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «я любю́» – the most common learner's mistake. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
