🐈 Ко́шки и се́мя дня · The cats and the seed of the day

👂 Listen first. Two fingers walk on the table: up to ✌️➡️ – away ⬅️✌️.

  • Ната́ша: Я подхожу́ к сы́ру. Я отхожу́ от сы́ра. 🧀
  • Ри́чард: Я подхожу́ к окну́. Я отхожу́ от окна́. 🪟 📒
  • Ната́ша: Ска́ффлз подхо́дит к столу́… Там сыр! Ска́ффлз, отойди́ от стола́!
  • Ска́ффлз: Я отхожу́… (and she comes closer and closer)
  • Ната́ша: Ты не отхо́дишь – ты подхо́дишь!
  • Ска́ффлз: Я подошла́ к сы́ру… и съе́ла его́! 😹 – Сли́нки: (from the door) Мя́у…

🌱 The seed of the day: a prefix and a little word go together – под- + к, от- + от, (День 18) в- + в, вы- + из. The little word tells the ending.

🔁 Повторя́йте · Repeat

Say every line aloud – two fingers walk on the table.

Я подхожу́ к столу́. ✌️➡️
Я отхожу́ от стола́. ⬅️✌️
Ри́чард подхо́дит к окну́ – и отхо́дит от окна́.
Ска́ффлз, отойди́ от сы́ра! 😹

🗣️ Ва́ша о́чередь! · Your turn!
  • Walk up to a window: «Я подхожу́ к окну́.» Step back: «Я отхожу́ от окна́.»

Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.

🔊 Звук дня · Sound of the day: Д before Х sounds «т»

подходи́ть – Д loses its voice before Х: «потхади́ть». The same as В → Ф in «вход» (День 18) and дед → «дет» (День 7).

  • Say: пот-хо-жу́ – smoothly: «потхажу́».
  • And отходи́ть sounds almost the same – listen to the start: по- / о-.
  • 30 seconds, every day. This is aerobics for the tongue.
🏠 Дома́шняя рабо́та · Homework – one small thing

Tomorrow, on your way out, look at a road: cross it (on the crossing!), walk as far as the corner, and walk past a shop. Tomorrow's prefixes: пере-, до-, про-. 🚸 And once: «Я подхожу́ к окну́.»
That is the first minute of День 21. You already know it – so День 21 starts with a win.

✔ Часть 1 гото́ва! Part 1 done.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 21 · Перехожу́ доро́гу ▶
Часть 2 · Е́сли хоти́те · +25 мину́тPart 2 – only if you want more. Nothing here is needed for tomorrow.
🤸 Жестова́я игра́ · Gesture game
  1. Finger walks. Put a cup, a phone and a book on the table. Your two fingers walk: «Я подхожу́ к ча́шке… Я отхожу́ от ча́шки… Я подхожу́ к телефо́ну…» ✌️
  2. Cat and cheese. One person is Scuffles, one guards the «cheese». Scuffles creeps up: «Я подхожу́!» – the guard: «Отойди́!» – Scuffles steps back: «Я отхожу́…» 😹
  3. Little words. Somebody says «под-» – you say «к!»; «от-» – «от!»; «в-» – «в!»; «вы-» – «из!»
🦉 Посло́вица дня · proverb of the day · 👂 listen and read
Я́блоко от я́блони недалеко́ па́дает.

The apple doesn't fall far from the apple tree.
Children are like their parents. «от я́блони» – от + «from what», today's little word! 🍎🌳 🤸 Gesture: an apple falls from your hand… just next to your foot.

📖 Чита́йте са́ми · Read alone – guess, then tap

🔗 Одно́ сло́во – мно́го слов · one word – many words
подходи́ть – also «to suit, to fit»: «Э́то пла́тье мне подхо́дит» – this dress fits me 👗 (it «comes up» to me!)
подхо́д – an approach · Отойди́! – step back! (the command of отойти́)

Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊

💡 Пра́вило · Rule
  • под- = up to: подходи́ть (я подхожу́, ты подхо́дишь) + к + «to whom/what»: к столу́, к окну́, к Ната́ше
  • от- = away from: отходи́ть (я отхожу́, ты отхо́дишь) + от + «from what»: от стола́, от окна́, от Ната́ши
  • pf: подойти́ (подошёл, подошла́) · отойти́ (отошёл, отошла́) · Отойди́!
  • Prefix + little word: в- в · вы- из · под- к · от- от
ударе́ние – словарь ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).

ЛО́НДОН – словарь ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – словарь ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.

The sign is only a help for learners. Russian books don't print it, and you don't write it.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
😄 Для тех, кто говори́т по-англи́йски · For English speakers

English come up to / step away from – three words each. Russian: подходи́ть к / отходи́ть от – and the little word от is the same as the prefix! Easy to remember. 😉

🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way

  • Prefix + its partner word. под- with к, от- with от – learned together as one chunk, so the ending comes with it (Ellis 2002, frequency and patterns).
  • Small and safe. Fingers walking on the table – the whole movement fits on a desk, at home or at work.
  • Hands and words. Up to and away from with the fingers: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
  • The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles «steps away» from the cheese – right up to it. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
