🦉 Посло́вица дня · proverb of the day · 👂 listen and read
Учи́ться никогда́ не по́здно.

It is never too late to learn.
For every student of Russian – at any age! 📚 «учи́ться» – the root уч- of today's words. 🤸 Gesture: finger up like a teacher… then a big smile and a thumbs-up.

📖 Чита́йте са́ми · Read alone – guess, then tap

Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋

🙌 Today's words:

Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊

📖 Текст уро́ка · The text – open it only after you can say it without reading

Я – учи́тельница. – А я – учени́к. Ната́ша – моя́ учи́тельница. Но я то́же учи́тель – учи́тель англи́йского! Ната́ша – моя́ учени́ца. – Мя́у. – Сли́нки – учени́ца! – Я учи́тель! – Ты ко́шка – ты учи́тельница! – Хорошо́. Я учи́тельница, а Сли́нки – моя́ учени́ца. Уро́к пе́рвый: где сыр?

I'm a teacher (she). – And I'm a pupil. Natasha is my teacher. But I'm a teacher too – a teacher of English! Natasha is my pupil (she). – Miaow. – Slinky is a pupil (she)! – I'm a teacher (he)! (Scuffles's mistake) – You're a she-cat – you're «учи́тельница»! – All right. I'm the teacher, and Slinky is my pupil. Lesson one: where is the cheese?

💡 Пра́вило · Rule
  • -тель – a person who does it: учи́ть → учи́тель · писа́ть → писа́тель · води́ть → води́тель
  • -тельница – the «she»: учи́тельница, писа́тельница
  • -ник → -ница: учени́к → учени́ца · рабо́тник → рабо́тница
  • Many: учителя́, ученики́, учени́цы
ударе́ние – словарь ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).

ЛО́НДОН – словарь ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – словарь ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.

The sign is only a help for learners. Russian books don't print it, and you don't write it.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
😄 Для тех, кто говори́т по-англи́йски · For English speakers

English teacher is he or she. Russian says it in the word: учи́тель 👨‍🏫 / учи́тельница 👩‍🏫. And English -er (teacher, writer, driver) = Russian -тель (учи́тель, писа́тель, води́тель) – the same idea! 😉

🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way

  • One root, a family. уч- is shown in five words at once – the student sees the family, not five separate words.
  • He and she side by side. The pairs он · она́ are on every suffix page (Natalia, 2 Nov: «give a link to this page and other way around»).
  • Natasha's own lesson. Her video with Maya – teacher and pupil – is the lesson of the day.
  • The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles, a she-cat, says «Я учи́тель!». The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
