🌱 The seed of the day: ру́чка has two meanings – a little hand 🤏 and a pen ✏️ (you hold it in your «little hand»). Also: a door handle! 🚪 Russian builds new words from old ones.

рука́ → ру́чка, нога́ → но́жка – the hard back sounds К, Г become the «softer» sounds Ч, Ж before the suffix. Feel the tongue move forward! 👅
- Say: ка – ча · га – жа. Then ру-ка́ – ру́ч-ка · но-га́ – но́ж-ка.
- The stress moves too: рука́ → ру́чка, нога́ → но́жка.
- 30 seconds, every day. This is aerobics for the tongue.
Tomorrow look at the doors in a shop, in the metro or at home. Do you see ВХОД and ВЫ́ХОД (День 18)? 🚪 Both have the same middle part – ход. And once, the aerobics: «рука́ – ру́чка, нога́ – но́жка, нос – но́сик».

- Big – small. The leader says a big word with a big gesture – the others answer with the dear word and a tiny gesture: «Рука́!» – «Ру́чка!» · «Нога́!» – «Но́жка!» · «Нос!» – «Но́сик!» · «Ла́па!» – «Ла́пка!» · «Голова́!» – «Голо́вка!» 🤸
- Pen or hand? Somebody says «Ру́чка!» – the others hold up a pen ✏️ or wiggle their fingers 🤏. Both are right! 😄
- Give me your paw. «Да́й ла́пку!» – everybody gives a «paw» to their neighbour. 🐾

- -к- (+ -а) – small, dear: ру́чка, но́жка, ла́пка, голо́вка
- before -к- the root changes: к → ч (рука́ → ру́чка) · г → ж (нога́ → но́жка) · х → ш (у́хо → у́шко)
- -ик for «he» words: нос → но́сик, кот → ко́тик (День 25)
- ру́чка = a little hand · a pen · a handle
ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
A Russian pen is «a little hand» – ру́чка ✏️. A door handle is a ру́чка too 🚪. And a chair or table «leg» is a но́жка – «Но́жка стола́». English uses leg for tables as well – so you already think a bit like a Russian! 😄
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- The aerobics comes back. The body words of Курс 1 are repeated with a new suffix – old words, a new tool.
- Big and tiny movements. The size of the gesture shows the meaning of the suffix: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- One letter change, many words. к → ч, г → ж is shown once and then found again (ру́чка, но́жка, у́шко) – a pattern, not a list (Ellis 2002, frequency and patterns).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles has «little hands». The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
