You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today Коще́й comes back – in the longest tale of the course.

- бессме́ртный = без + смерть – without death, the Deathless. He can't die – unless you find the needle (День 12)… or have a very good horse (today).

📚 How to read a long text
1. Read a part to the end – don't stop at every new word.
2. Say it in one sentence: Кто? Что случи́лось? – «Ива́н загляну́л в чула́н, и Коще́й унёс Ма́рью.»
3. Open the word list only for a word that stops the story.
4. One part a day is fine. Tales are told slowly: «Ско́ро ска́зка ска́зывается, да не ско́ро де́ло де́лается.» 🦉

БЕССМЕ́РТНЫЙ – two С together sound one long «с-с»: «бе-с:-ме́ртный».

A tale is quickly told, but a deed is slowly done.
The storyteller's own words – they come in the middle of many tales, when the hero walks for years. Learning Russian too: the tale is quick, the work is slow. 🐢 🤸 Gesture: a quick wave «ско́ро», then slow heavy steps «не ско́ро».

Marya Morevna says: «Go everywhere, only don't look into this closet!» – And of course he looked. Scuffles stands by the kitchen cupboard. – Don't look? But I will! Bang! A bag of cat food falls out. – I'm Koschei the Deathless (she-form)! (Scuffles's mistake) – Koschei is a he, Scuffles. And you are Scuffles the Deathless! – A cat has nine lives – she is almost deathless! Slinky is eating the cat food. She doesn't care.
- A long text: read a part to the end → one sentence (Кто? Что случи́лось?) → the word list only when stuck.
- без + смерть = бессме́ртный (СС = one long С).
- «Не загля́дывай!» – 〰️ «don't» (impf) · «Я загляну́!» – ✅ «I will» (pf).
- The kind hero is helped – again. 🐝🦁🐦
ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English has the same «Do not open!» story: Bluebeard and his forbidden room, or Pandora and her box. In every language the one who is told «don't look» – looks. 😄

- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- A whole real text. A tale the student already knows the shape of is input they can understand and enjoy, even with unknown words (Krashen 1985, comprehensible input). The word list is folded – the student opens it only when stuck.
- Read for the story. Readers who guess from the story and skip a few words read more and learn more words on the way (Nation 2013).
- Summarise each part. Saying a part in one sentence is a proven reading strategy – it checks understanding and makes the story stay (Duke · Pearson 2002, effective reading comprehension).
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
