День 14 из 40: Ку́рица и золоты́е я́йца
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – жа́дный, хозя́ин, нести́ я́йца.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: нести́ – to carry (Курс 3) and «ку́рица несёт я́йца» – to lay eggs 🥚
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 13: flap your arms like a hen:
«Ко-ко-ко! Ку́рица снесла́ яйцо́!» 🐔🥚
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Remember Ку́рочка Ря́ба (Курс 2, День 28) and her golden egg? Today – another golden hen, and a whole text by Lev Tolstoy.
- Tap and listen. Then do it: flap like a hen 🐔 – then hold a golden egg in your open hand 🥚✨.
- нести́ has two jobs: нести́ су́мку – to carry a bag (Курс 3) · ку́рица несёт я́йца – the hen lays eggs.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
жа́дный – greedy: grab everything with both hands and hug it to your chest 🫳 · сра́зу – at once: one quick clap 👏
👂 Listen first. Greedy hands on «жа́дный», one clap on «сра́зу».
🦊 A fable – a short story with a lesson
ба́сня (a fable) or быль (a true story) – Lev Tolstoy wrote hundreds of them for children who were learning to read.
It is short, it has animals or simple people – and at the end a lesson (мора́ль). Today's lesson: don't be greedy – you lose what you had.
он ду́мал, что… – a long sentence with что (Курс 3): he thought that inside her there was a big lump of gold.
🌱 The seed of the day: нести́ – to carry and to lay eggs. And: you can read a whole text by Lev Tolstoy – today!
Say every line aloud – show the gesture.
Ку́рица несёт я́йца. 🐔🥚
У хозя́ина ку́рица несла́ золоты́е я́йца. ✨
Он хоте́л сра́зу мно́го зо́лота. 👏
Жа́дный хозя́ин! 🫳
- What do you want сра́зу – and what is better ка́ждый день a little? «Я хочу́ сра́зу…» · «Лу́чше ка́ждый день немно́го…» 🇷🇺 (Russian, for example! 😉)
- Say what a hen does: «Ку́рица несёт я́йца.» And what you carry: «Я несу́ су́мку.»
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
ЗО́ЛОТО – three О, but only the first is a real «о»: «зо́лъта».
- After the stress, О is very short and weak: «зо́-лъ-та».
- In золото́й the stress moves – now the last О is clear: «зълато́й».
- Clap on the loud syllable: ЗО́-ло-то 👏 · зо-ло-ТО́Й 👏 · КУ́-ри-ца 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning open your hands like a book and start a tale in a storyteller's voice: «Жи́ли-бы́ли дед и ба́ба…» 📖
That is the first minute of День 15. You already know it – so День 15 starts with a win.
- Play the fable. One is the hen 🐔 – every time the «master» claps, she «lays» a golden egg (a ball, a sweet). The master gets greedy: «Мне ма́ло! Сра́зу всё!» – and the eggs stop. 😄
- Two jobs of нести́. Show it: «Я несу́ су́мку!» (carry a bag) · «Ку́рица несёт яйцо́!» (flap and «lay» an egg).
- A little or all at once? One offers a sweet: «Кусо́чек и́ли сра́зу всё?» The others answer – the wise way. 🍬
Lev Tolstoy's fable – the whole text is just two sentences. Read it there too, with the English. ✨ The bar at its top brings you back here.
Greed never leads to good.
The lesson of today's fable – and of Scuffles's cheese. 🧀 🤸 Gesture: grab with both hands «жа́дность», then shake your head «до добра́ не доведёт».
Read the whole fable aloud, slowly. Every word – Lev Tolstoy's. ✋
Ку́рица и золоты́е я́йца
У одного́ хозя́ина ку́рица несла́ золоты́е я́йца. Ему́ захоте́лось сра́зу побо́льше зо́лота, и он уби́л ку́рицу (он ду́мал, что внутри́ её большо́й ком зо́лота); а она́ была́ така́я же, как и все ку́рицы.
Лев Никола́евич Толсто́й
жа́дный – greedy · жа́дность – greed · жа́дина – a greedy one (children say it! «Жа́дина-говя́дина!» 😄)
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
The hen carries eggs… where to? In a bag? (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! «Нести́ я́йца» means to lay eggs. A hen lays eggs – one egg every day. Richard gives you a little piece of cheese. – A little piece is not enough! I want all the cheese at once! Grab! The cheese falls on the floor. Slinky eats the cheese. – Scuffles, you are like the master in the fable! A greedy cat! – Greed never leads to good.
- нести́ = to carry · «ку́рица несёт я́йца» = lays eggs.
- ба́сня / быль – a short story with a lesson (мора́ль).
- сра́зу – at once · ка́ждый день – every day.
- он ду́мал, что… – a что sentence (Курс 3).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English has the same story: «killing the goose that lays the golden eggs» – Aesop's fable. In Russian it is a hen. English «lay eggs», Russian «нести́ (carry) eggs» – the hen «carries» them out into the world. 🐔
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- A whole authentic text. Finishing a real text by a great writer – even a short one – gives the student the feeling «I can read Russian books», and that feeling keeps learners going (Dörnyei 2001, motivational strategies).
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
