День 12 из 40: Царе́вна-лягу́шка
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – царе́вна, стрела́, боло́то.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: «Игла́ в яйце́, яйцо́ в у́тке, у́тка в за́йце…» – things inside things
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 11: squat down like a frog, jump once:
«Я – лягу́шка. Ква-ква!» 🐸
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today's frog is a princess. 👑
- Tap and listen. Then do it: put a crown on your head 👑 – then squat down like a frog 🐸.
- царе́вна = the tsar's daughter, a princess · царе́вич = the tsar's son · цари́ца = the tsar's wife.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
стрела́ – an arrow: pull a bow, let go 🏹 · боло́то – a bog: your feet stick, «чвак-чвак» 🐸 · дуб – an oak: arms up wide, a big strong tree 🌳
👂 Listen first. Make the hands smaller and smaller on the chain – like a матрёшка. 🪆
★ Things inside things – the матрёшка chain. 30 seconds.
«Его́ смерть на конце́ иглы́, та игла́ в яйце́, яйцо́ в у́тке, у́тка в за́йце, тот за́яц сиди́т в ка́менном сундуке́, а сунду́к стои́т на высо́ком дубу́.» – from the tale
- Где? – в / на + -е: яйцо́ → в яйце́ · у́тка → в у́тке · за́яц → в за́йце · сунду́к → в сундуке́
- A few old words say -у́: на дубу́, в лесу́, на шкафу́ (День 1!), на полу́.
- Gesture: both hands round a big thing, then smaller, smaller, smaller 🪆 – one hand inside the other.
🌱 The seed of the day: tales love three – three sons, three arrows, three tasks – and chains of в … в … в …. And Васили́са's line you know from Курс 2: «У́тро ве́чера мудрене́е». 🌅
Say the chain aloud – each time the hands get smaller. 🪆
Игла́ в яйце́. 🥚
Яйцо́ в у́тке. 🦆
У́тка в за́йце. 🐇
За́яц в сундуке́. Сунду́к на дубу́. 🌳
Ложи́сь спать – у́тро ве́чера мудрене́е! 🌅
- Make your own chain at home: «Ключ в су́мке, су́мка в шкафу́, шкаф в ко́мнате…» 🔑👜
- Count the three tasks with your fingers: «Руба́шка, хлеб, та́нец!» 👕🍞💃
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Где? – в … -е. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
ЦАРЕ́ВНА sounds «цыре́вна».
- Ц is always hard: after Ц, И sounds «ы» – цирк «цырк», царе́вич «цыре́вич».
- The А before the stress after Ц sounds «ы» too: царе́вна «цыре́вна».
- Clap on the loud syllable: ца-РЕ́В-на 👏 · ля-ГУ́Ш-ка 👏 · яй-ЦО́ 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning make a thin, bony, scary face and a dry voice: «Я – Коще́й Бессме́ртный!» 💀 – and the chain: «Игла́ в яйце́, яйцо́ в у́тке…»
That is the first minute of День 13. You already know it – so День 13 starts with a win.
- Three arrows. Three people «shoot» a paper arrow ✏️. Where does it fall? The others say: «Стрела́ на столе́! Стрела́ под сту́лом! Стрела́ в коро́бке!» – the third one is the bog, and its owner must «marry» the frog. 🐸😄
- The матрёшка chain. Hide a small thing in a cup, the cup in a box, the box in a bag. The others say the chain: «Ключ в ча́шке, ча́шка в коро́бке, коро́бка в су́мке!» 🪆
- Царь, цари́ца, царе́вич, царе́вна. Point at a person – they show a crown 👑 and say who they are: man → царь or царе́вич, woman → цари́ца or царе́вна.
The whole tale, as A. N. Tolstoy told it: three arrows, the frog in the bog, the shirt, the bread, the dance – and the long road to Коще́й Бессме́ртный. 🐸👑 The bar at its top brings you back here.
Don't be born beautiful – be born lucky.
Luck matters more than beauty. Васили́са was a beautiful princess – and still she had to live as a frog! 🐸 🤸 Gesture: frame your face with your hands «краси́вая?», then cross your fingers for luck 🤞.
Read every line aloud, slowly. Real lines from the tale. ✋
🙌 Today's words: ЦАРЕ́ВНА · СТРЕЛА́ · БОЛО́ТО
В ста́рые го́ды у одного́ царя́ бы́ло три сы́на.
– Возьми́те по стреле́, выходи́те в чи́стое по́ле и стреля́йте.
– Не тужи́, Ива́н-царе́вич, ложи́сь лу́чше спать, у́тро ве́чера мудрене́е.
И жи́ли до́лго и счастли́во до глубо́кой ста́рости. 👑
лягу́шка – a frog · лягушо́нок – a little frog (-онок, like котёнок) · ква́кать – to croak «ква!»
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Richard throws a paper arrow. It falls next to Scuffles. – Your arrow is with me! I'm a cat-prince! (Scuffles's mistake: царе́вич) – A princess, Scuffles! Царе́вич is he, the tsar's son. Царе́вна is she, the tsar's daughter. – I'm a cat-princess! Richard, marry me! – No, Scuffles. I'm already married! – And you won't find Koschei that easily: the needle is in the egg, the egg in the duck, the duck in the hare, the hare in the chest, the chest on the oak. Slinky is sitting in a box. A cat in a box! Miaow!
- ★ Где? – в / на + -е: в яйце́, в у́тке, в за́йце, в сундуке́.
- Old -у́: на дубу́, в лесу́, на шкафу́, на полу́.
- царь → цари́ца (wife) · царе́вич (son) · царе́вна (daughter).
- Tales love three: три сы́на, три стрелы́, три зада́ния.
- «У́тро ве́чера мудрене́е» – Курс 2, День 12 – here it comes from.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English tales have the same rule of three: three little pigs, three bears, Goldilocks tries three bowls. And the frog who becomes a prince is in English too – but in the Russian tale the frog is the princess, and the hero must find her. 🐸👑
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- A whole real text. A tale the student already knows the shape of is input they can understand and enjoy, even with unknown words (Krashen 1985, comprehensible input). The word list is folded – the student opens it only when stuck.
- Read for the story. Readers who guess from the story and skip a few words read more and learn more words on the way (Nation 2013).
- Repetition inside the tale. Tales repeat the same line three times with one thing changed – spaced retrieval inside a story (Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025); a line with a rhythm is remembered whole (Wray 2002, formulaic language).
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
