🔁 Who did it – or what was done?
👈 прочита́вший – the person who read: Ри́чард, прочита́вший кни́гу.
👇✅ прочи́танный – the thing that was read: прочи́танная кни́га.
How: -ать → -анный: прочита́ть → прочи́танный, написа́ть → напи́санный (the stress goes one step back!).
Short verbs -ыть, -ить → -тый: закры́ть → закры́тый, откры́ть → откры́тый, вы́пить → вы́питый.
Learn it: съесть → съе́денный.
At home people say it short, with one н: кни́га прочи́тана, дверь закры́та, письмо́ напи́сано.

🌱 The seed of the day: -нный / -тый = done to the thing. Most of them come from ✅ verbs. Tomorrow – something new: two things at the same time.

🔁 Повторя́йте · Repeat

Say every line aloud – 👇 and ✅.

Ри́чард прочита́л кни́гу. Э́то прочи́танная кни́га. 📖
Дверь закры́та. Э́то закры́тая дверь. 🚪

Сыр съе́ден. Съе́денный сыр – э́то Ска́ффлз! 😾

🗣️ Ва́ша о́чередь! · Your turn!
  • Look round: what is done? «Дверь закры́та. Окно́ откры́то. Ча́шка вы́пита.» ☕
  • Say it the book way: «закры́тая дверь, откры́тое окно́, прочи́танная кни́га».
  • Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.

Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.

🔊 Звук дня · Sound of the day: the stress jumps back

прочита́ть – the stress is on -ТА́-. But прочи́танный – it jumps one step back, to -ЧИ́-.

  • прочи-ТА́-ть → про-ЧИ́-танный 👏 · напи-СА́-ть → на-ПИ́-санный 👏
  • The О in про- has no stress: it sounds «пра-»: «прачи́танный».
  • The short verbs keep it: за-КРЫ́-ть → за-КРЫ́-тый 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
🏠 Дома́шняя рабо́та · Homework – one small thing

Tomorrow morning do two things at the same time – read and listen to music 🎵 – and say: «Я чита́ю и слу́шаю му́зыку.»
That is the first minute of День 5. You already know it – so День 5 starts with a win.

✔ Часть 1 гото́ва! Part 1 done.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 5 · Чита́я, слу́шаю ▶
Часть 2 · Е́сли хоти́те · +25 мину́тPart 2 – only if you want more. Nothing here is needed for tomorrow.
🤸 Жестова́я игра́ · Gesture game
  1. Open or closed? Open and close a door, a window, a book, a box. The others: «Откры́тая дверь!» · «Закры́тое окно́!» · «Закры́тая кни́га!» – the ending follows the thing.
  2. The person or the thing? Point at a person 👈 – «прочита́вший!»; point at the book 👇 – «прочи́танная!». Faster and faster.
  3. Done! Do something (drink a glass of water, write your name) – the others say it short: «Вода́ вы́пита!» · «И́мя напи́сано!» ✅
🦉 Посло́вица дня · proverb of the day · 👂 listen and read
Пу́ганая воро́на куста́ бои́тся.

A frightened crow is afraid of a bush.
Once something bad has happened, you are afraid of everything that looks like it. «пу́ганая» – frightened (somebody frightened her): a «done to it» word, like today's, in an old short form with one н. 🤸 Gesture: jump back from a bush, hands up.

📖 Чита́йте са́ми · Read alone – guess, then tap

Read every line aloud, slowly. Find the «done to it» words. ✋

🙌 Today's words:

закрыва́ть · закры́тый – closed · откры́тый – open · откры́тка – a postcard («an open letter») 💌

Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊

📖 Текст уро́ка · The text – open it only after you can say it without reading

I've read the book! – This is a book that has been read. And the door is closed. It is a closed door. The letter is written. Here is the written letter. – Scuffles puts her paw on the book: This is a book that has read! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! The book did not read – somebody read the book. A book that has been read! – Scuffles looks at the empty plate: And this is eaten cheese! – Yes! The eaten cheese is your work! – Slinky sits by the closed door. Miaow!

💡 Пра́вило · Rule
  • -нный / -тый – done to the thing (from ✅ verbs).
  • -ать → -анный: прочита́ть → прочи́танный · написа́ть → напи́санный. The stress jumps back.
  • -ыть / -ить → -тый: закры́ть → закры́тый · откры́ть → откры́тый.
  • Learn it: съесть → съе́денный.
  • Speech, short, one н: прочи́тан · прочи́тана · прочи́тано · прочи́таны
  • 👈 прочита́вший (the person) · 👇 прочи́танный (the thing).
ударе́ние – словарь ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).

ЛО́НДОН – словарь ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – словарь ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.

The sign is only a help for learners. Russian books don't print it, and you don't write it.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
😄 Для тех, кто говори́т по-англи́йски · For English speakers

This is the English -ed word: a read book, a closed door, a written letter. And the short form is English «is closed»: Дверь закры́та – The door is closed. Easy! 😄

🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way

  • Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
  • Two forms side by side. Forms that look alike are easier to tell apart when you see them together and notice the difference (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
  • Learn to recognise, not to produce. Participles and gerunds are mostly written Russian. A reader needs to recognise them fast; speaking can still use кото́рый. Receptive knowledge comes first and grows fastest with a lot of easy reading (Nation 2013, Learning Vocabulary in Another Language).
  • The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
  • The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
