День 3 из 40: Кот, съе́вший сыр
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 2 – съе́вший, прише́дший.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: съесть – он съел → съе́вший = кото́рый съел
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 2: the cheese story of Курс 3, the long way:
«Ска́ффлз съе́ла сыр! Ко́шка, кото́рая съе́ла сыр, сиди́т на дива́не.» 🧀
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today we say it the short way – the book way.
- Tap a word and listen. Then do it: point back 👈 at the cat – and put your thumb back over your shoulder: the one who did it (the past, as in Курс 2).
- кот, съе́вший сыр = кот, кото́рый съел сыр. Ри́чард, прише́дший домо́й = Ри́чард, кото́рый пришёл домо́й.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
Прише́дший – who came: walk two fingers to your chest (при-, Курс 3), thumb over your shoulder.
Two participles now: 〰️ чита́ющий – doing it now · 👈 чита́вший – did it before.
👂 Listen first. Point back 👈 and thumb over your shoulder on every -вший word.
🔁 Now or before?
〰️ -ющий / -ящий – doing it now: ко́шка, съеда́ющая сыр (she is eating it now)
👈 -вший – did it before: ко́шка, съе́вшая сыр (the cheese is gone!)
How: take the past form, change -л into -вший: съе-л → съе́-вший · чита́-л → чита́-вший · спа-л → спа́-вший.
A few have no -л in the past: пришёл → прише́дший – learn it as a word.
🌱 The seed of the day: -вший = кото́рый + the past. Tomorrow – not the cat who ate, but the cheese that was eaten: съе́денный сыр.
Say every line aloud – 👈 and thumb over your shoulder.
Ска́ффлз съе́ла сыр. Она́ – ко́шка, съе́вшая сыр. 🧀
Ри́чард пришёл домо́й. Ри́чард, прише́дший домо́й, открыва́ет холоди́льник.
Сли́нки спит. Она́ не съе́ла сыр.
Кот, съе́вший сыр, – кот, кото́рый съел сыр.
- What did you do yesterday? Say it the book way: «Я – челове́к, прочита́вший кни́гу.» · «Я – челове́к, съе́вший пиро́г.» 😄
- Then the home way: «Я – челове́к, кото́рый прочита́л кни́гу.»
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Now 〰️ or before 👈? A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
СЪЕ́ВШИЙ sounds «съе́фшый».
- В before Ш sounds Ф: съе́вший «съе́фшый», чита́вший «чита́фшый».
- Ш is always hard – «шый», never a soft «ший». Lips a little round.
- Ъ in съе́вший: a tiny break – «с-йе́»: с·ъе́л, с·ъе́вший.
- Clap on the loud syllable: СЪЕ́-вший 👏 · при-ШЕ́Д-ший 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning do two things and say them with the stamp ✅ (Курс 2): «Я прочита́л(а) кни́гу. ✅ Я закры́л(а) дверь. ✅» 📖🚪
That is the first minute of День 4. You already know it – so День 4 starts with a win.
- Now or before? One person eats an apple 🍎 – the others: «Челове́к, съеда́ющий я́блоко!» 〰️. The apple is gone – «Челове́к, съе́вший я́блоко!» 👈.
- Who did it? Hide something (a key, a spoon). The others guess: «Ты – челове́к, спря́тавший ключ!» The one who did it says: «Да, э́то я!» 😄
- Thumb or line? One says a participle – the others show 〰️ (-ющий, -ящий) or 👈 + thumb over the shoulder (-вший): чита́ющий · прочита́вший · спя́щий · съе́вший · прише́дший …
What has fallen off the cart is lost.
What is gone is gone – don't cry about it. Like Richard's cheese! 🧀 «упа́ло, пропа́ло» – two past forms with -л; the participles are упа́вший, пропа́вший. 🤸 Gesture: let something fall from your hand, then show your empty hands.
Read every line aloud, slowly. Find the -вший words. ✋
🙌 Today's words: СЪЕ́ВШИЙ · ПРИШЕ́ДШИЙ
Ри́чард, прише́дший домо́й, открыва́ет холоди́льник.
Сы́ра нет. Где ко́шка, съе́вшая сыр?
Ска́ффлз, съе́вшая сыр, сиди́т на дива́не.
Сли́нки, спя́щая на дива́не, сыр не е́ла.
А вы? Вы – челове́к, прочита́вший э́ту строчку! 🎉
приходи́ть – to come · прийти́ ✅ · прише́дший – who came · прихо́д – coming (Курс 3)
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Hello! Where is my cheese? – Richard, who has come home, opens the fridge. There is no cheese! – It's Slinky! Slinky is the cat eating the cheese! (Scuffles's mistake: the cheese was eaten yesterday) – No, Scuffles. The cheese was eaten yesterday. Not «eating» – she is asleep. Who ate it? The cat who ate the cheese – that's you! – I'm the cat who ate the cheese… Miaow. – Slinky is asleep. She is a sleeping cat who did not eat the cheese. – And I'm a man who did not eat the cheese.
- -вший – a participle of the past: кото́рый + the past.
- The past form -л → -вший: съел → съе́вший · чита́л → чита́вший · прочита́л → прочита́вший.
- No -л in the past: пришёл → прише́дший (learn it).
- 〰️ съеда́ющий (now) · 👈 съе́вший (before).
- Endings as always: съе́вший · съе́вшая · съе́вшие
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English needs four words: the cat who ate the cheese. Russian needs one: съе́вший. That is why books love participles – they are short. In speech Russians still say «кото́рый съел» – and you can too. 😉
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Two forms side by side. Forms that look alike are easier to tell apart when you see them together and notice the difference (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
- Old pattern, new word. Every new form is built from a form the student already knows (они́ чита́ют, он съел), so the new step is small.
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
прише́дший – who came (no picture yet)
съе́вший
