День 5 из 40: Чита́я, слу́шаю
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – чита́я, слу́шая, гля́дя.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: гляде́ть – они́ глядя́т → гля́дя – looking (at the same time)
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 4: two things at once – a book and music:
«Я чита́ю и слу́шаю му́зыку.» 📖🎵
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today we say it the book way: «Чита́я, я слу́шаю му́зыку.»
- Tap a word and listen. Then do it: both hands draw two long lines side by side 〰️〰️ – two things at the same time.
- Чита́я, я слу́шаю. = I read and at the same time I listen. One person, two things, now.
- On День 1 Scuffles promised you гля́дя – here it is! 😼
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
A new kind of word – it has no endings: он чита́я, она́ чита́я, они́ чита́я – always чита́я. Like a «how» word (бы́стро, хорошо́).
👂 Listen first. Two lines with both hands 〰️〰️ on every -я word.
〰️〰️ Two things at the same time
Take они́ and change the ending into -я:
они́ чита́-ют → чита́-я · они́ слу́ша-ют → слу́ша-я · они́ гляд-я́т → гля́дя
After ж, ш, ч, щ write -а: они́ слы́ш-ат → слы́ша · они́ леж-а́т → лёжа · они́ мурлы́ч-ут → мурлы́ча
One person does both: «Чита́я, я слу́шаю» – I read, I listen.
Name: дееприча́стие – a gerund. No endings – it never changes.
🌱 The seed of the day: -я = at the same time. It comes from 〰️ verbs (doing). Tomorrow – its ✅ brother: прочита́в – «having read», first this, then that.
Say every line aloud – both hands 〰️〰️.
Чита́я, я слу́шаю му́зыку. 📖🎵
Слу́шая Ната́шу, Ри́чард пи́шет. ✍️
Ска́ффлз сиди́т, гля́дя на ры́бок. 🐠
Сли́нки спит, мурлы́ча. 😴
- Do two things at once – and say it: «Си́дя, я пью чай.» ☕ · «Слу́шая му́зыку, я рису́ю.» 🎨 · «Гля́дя в окно́, я ду́маю.»
- Say it the home way too: «Я сижу́ и пью чай.»
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Take «они́» and change the ending. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
ЧИТА́Я sounds «чита́-йа»: after a vowel, Я = Й + А.
- чита́я «чита́-йа» · слу́шая «слу́ша-йа» – two short syllables at the end.
- гля́дя – the stress is on ГЛЯ́; the last Я is weak and short.
- Clap on the loud syllable: чи-ТА́-я 👏 · СЛУ́-ша-я 👏 · ГЛЯ́-дя 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning read one page, then close the book – and say it with the stamp ✅: «Я прочита́л(а) страни́цу и закры́л(а) кни́гу.» 📖✅
That is the first minute of День 6. You already know it – so День 6 starts with a win.
- Two at once. One person does two things together – walks and sings, sits and claps. The others: «Гуля́я, он поёт!» · «Си́дя, она́ хло́пает!» 👏
- Can you? Try: «Чита́я, я пою́!» Can you read and sing at the same time? 😄
- -я or -а? Point at a word card: читать → «чита́я!» · слы́шать → «слы́ша!» · лежа́ть → «лёжа!»
If you don't know the ford, don't go into the water.
Don't start something if you don't know how deep it is. «зна́я» – knowing: today's -я word (они́ зна́ют → зна́я)! 🤸 Gesture: test the water with one foot, then step back.
Read every line aloud, slowly. Find the -я / -а words. ✋
🙌 Today's words:
Not Scuffles 😄)
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Richard is reading and listening. Reading, he listens to me. – Yes! Listening to Natasha, I write. – Scuffles is sitting on the wardrobe: I'm sitting, «looking» at the fish! (Scuffles's mistake: гляде́я) – Not «гляде́я» – гля́дя! They look – глядя́т – so: гля́дя. – I'm sitting, looking at the fish. High I sit – far I look! – Slinky is asleep on the sofa. – And Slinky is sleeping and purring. Purr…
- дееприча́стие 〰️〰️ – a gerund: a second thing at the same time, the same person.
- они́ -ют / -ят → -я: чита́я, слу́шая, гля́дя.
- After ж, ш, ч, щ → -а: слы́ша, лёжа, мурлы́ча.
- No endings – чита́я for everybody.
- Books: «Чита́я, я слу́шаю.» Speech: «Я чита́ю и слу́шаю.»
- Not the same as yesterday's participle: чита́ющий кот (which cat?) · чита́я, кот слу́шает (how? when?).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English uses -ing for this too: «Reading, I listen to music.» So English -ing = Russian чита́ющий (День 2) and чита́я (today). Russian keeps them apart: one is like an adjective, one is like «how». 😉
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Old pattern, new word. Every new form is built from a form the student already knows (они́ чита́ют, он съел), so the new step is small.
- Two forms side by side. Forms that look alike are easier to tell apart when you see them together and notice the difference (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
