★ Слу́шать и слы́шать · Listen and hear – 30 seconds
слу́шать – you do it, on purpose: Я слу́шаю ра́дио. Слу́шайте!
слы́шать – it comes to you, you can: Я слы́шу ко́шку. Вы меня́ слы́шите? – no command!
The same pair you know: смотре́ть (look) – ви́деть (see).

🌱 The seed of the day: in Курс 1 every reading day had these four steps. Russian is not written the way it sounds – «молоко́» sounds «малако́». Who reads first, says it wrong; who listens first, says it right.

- Put on one minute of Russian – a song, the radio. Hand behind your ear: «Я слу́шаю.» Then say one word you caught: «Я слы́шу сло́во…»
- Be the teacher: «Слу́шайте! Вы слы́шите?» – to your family or your cat.
- Говори́ть – не обяза́тельно. · Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.

One sound changes the word: слу́шать – listen · слы́шать – hear.
- У – round your lips forward, like a kiss 😗: у-у-у.
- Ы – lips flat, say «и» and pull your tongue back: ы-ы-ы. There is no Ы in English – this is aerobics for the tongue!
- Now fast: у – ы – у – ы · СЛУ́-шать 👏 · СЛЫ́-шать 👏. 30 секу́нд ка́ждый день. · 30 seconds every day.
За́втра, пе́ред уро́ком, поста́вьте та́ймер на 15 мину́т ⏱. · Tomorrow, before the lesson, set a timer for 15 minutes. Then say with your fingers: «Снача́ла слу́шаем ☝️, пото́м повторя́ем ✌️, пото́м чита́ем 3.»

- У́хо и́ли глаз? Someone says «Слу́шайте!» – hand behind your ear 👂. «Смотри́те!» – hand above your eyes 🫡. Faster and faster.
- Слы́шу – не слы́шу. One person says a word more and more quietly: «Вы слы́шите?» – the others: «Слы́шу!» 👂✅ … «Не слы́шу!» 🤷
- Снача́ла – пото́м. Say two things you do every morning, with the fingers: «Снача́ла я встаю́ ☝️, пото́м пью чай ✌️.»
Remembering a word with the whole body works better than reading it again.
Don’t hurry with your tongue – hurry with your deeds.
In a lesson: listen and do first – speak when you are ready. Nobody is forced to speak. 🤸 Gesture: a finger on your lips, then busy hands.
In the conversation «Заче́м аэро́бика?» read the part that begins «In the beginning there was the spoken word…» – Natasha explains why we hear first: Russian spelling shows the parts of a word, not its sound. · Ру́сское письмо́ пока́зывает ча́сти сло́ва, а не звук.

- Subtitles stay on in Natasha's videos – they are like a teacher whispering to a student who doesn't repeat yet.

- снача́ла …, пото́м …, а пото́м … – first, then, and then.
ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English has the same pair: listen = слу́шать, hear = слы́шать. You can't say «Hear!» to a class – and in Russian you can't say «Слы́шай!». And «I hear you, but I'm not listening» – «Слы́шу, но не слу́шаю» – works in both languages. Ask any teenager. 😄
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Listening first. Children – and adults – understand long before they speak; a time of only listening is normal (the «silent period», Krashen 1982). That is why «Ва́ша о́чередь» is always optional.
- Russian spelling is not sound. It shows the parts of a word (молок-о́), not how it sounds («малако́»). Who learns a word from the page first, says it as it is written – Natasha's conversation on Russian language aerobics.
- Hear the difference. Pairs that differ in one sound (был – бил, слу́шать – слы́шать) train the ear to notice what matters.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «слы́шай» – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
