The second vowel of each pair starts with a little «й» (y): я = йа, ё = йо, ю = йу, е = йэ.

The first vowels Russian children learn at school are А and У. Put them together and you have two real words:
👶 how babies cry to call their mother
🌲 what you shout when you are lost in a forest

🤫 Ъ и Ь · Two letters without a sound
- Ъ – the hard sign, Ь – the soft sign. They have no sound of their own, but they change the letter before them.
- съем (I will eat) – семь (seven): only the sign is different.
