Stress and Russian vowels – one strong syllable in every word

Russians write молоко́ (milk) – but they say «м’лако́». Only one «о» sounds like «о»!

💡 Реду́кция гла́сных · Vowel reduction – why «о» sounds like «а»
Only the stressed vowel is said clearly. The other vowels are said shorter and weaker, and some sound different. This is called vowel reduction (реду́кция). Look at молоко́:
м’
far before: weak
ла
just before: «а»
ко́
stress: clear «о»
🔴 о and а
* Just before the stress or at the start of a word → «а» (like u in up): окно́ «акно́».
- Everywhere else → a short, weak sound (like a in sofa). We write it ’: молоко́ «м’лако́», я́блоко «я́бл’к’».
🟣 е and я
* Without stress → a short «и»: метро́ «митро́», телефо́н «тилифо́н».
- At the end of a word, я is weak: вре́мя «вре́м’».
🟢 Never change
и, ы, у, ю, ё – always the same. But и after ж, ш, ц sounds like ы.🔴 О и А без ударе́ния · «о» and «а» without stress – listen and repeat

Почему́ меня́ется звук? · Why does the sound change?
Уда́рный гла́сный звучи́т чётко и до́лго. Когда́ ударе́ние смеща́ется на друго́й слог, гла́сный без ударе́ния теря́ет си́лу и длину́. Э́то называ́ется реду́кция.
The stressed vowel sounds clear and long. When the stress moves to another syllable, the vowel without stress loses its strength and length. This is called reduction.
дом «дом» → дома́ «дама́»
дом – a clear «о» · дома́ (houses) – the stress moved, so «о» sounds like a short «а».

When the stress moves, the vowel sounds different too.
кот – «о» has the stress, so it is clear. коты́ – the stress moved to «ы», so «о» sounds «а».

сего́дня (today) has two surprises: «г» sounds «в». The same happens in the endings -ого, -его: «-ово, -ево».
⭐ The rule · Пра́вило
- Find the ´ – that vowel is clear.
- о, а just before it (or at the start of a word) → «а». Other о, а → short and weak.
- е, я without stress → short «и».
- и, ы, у, ю, ё never change.
