День 10 из 32: Ско́лько сто́ит?
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 2 – рубль (рубля́, рубле́й), покупа́ть.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: покупа́ть – я покупа́ю, ты покупа́ешь… (family 1) · and the question Ско́лько сто́ит?
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 9. Count to 20 on your fingers – twice ten 🙌🙌 – and say: «Пять огурцо́в!» 🥒
You know it – that is your first win today. Today the numbers go shopping. 🛒
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: how much is a cucumber? What does Richard buy? Does Slinky buy anything? 👂
- You know this question from Курс 1, День 11: «Ско́лько сто́ит огуре́ц? – Сто рубле́й.» Today you understand every word.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
- рубль does what огуре́ц did yesterday: оди́н рубль · два рубля́ · пять рубле́й.
- Ско́лько сто́ит? – How much is it? Ask it in every shop. 🛒
👂 Listen first. Rub your fingers on «рубль», give and take on «покупа́ю». 💰
(Slinky doesn't buy anything – she has no money.) 😌
🌱 The seed of the day: the three forms of День 9 work for money too – and for everything you buy.
Say every line aloud, with the gestures.
Ско́лько сто́ит? 🤷
Оди́н рубль. Два рубля́. Пять рубле́й. 💰
Два́дцать рубле́й. Сто рубле́й!
Я покупа́ю. Ты покупа́ешь. Он покупа́ет.
Мы покупа́ем. Вы покупа́ете. Они́ покупа́ют.
Я покупа́ю пять огурцо́в! 🥒
- Put a cucumber (or an apple) on the table and ask: «Ско́лько сто́ит?» – answer with coins: «Пять рубле́й!» 🪙
- Buy it: give the coins, take the cucumber – «Я покупа́ю огуре́ц!»
- Ask the cat: «Ты покупа́ешь ры́бу?» 🐟
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. The number decides the end. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
рубль ends in ЛЬ – a soft L.
- Smile 🙂, the middle of the tongue goes up to the roof of your mouth: ль – like the l in million.
- Hard л (стол – the tongue back, a deep sound) – soft ль (рубль). Say: стол – рубль, стол – рубль.
- Both at once: рубле́й – soft again. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow, take something from the kitchen and ask: «Ско́лько сто́ит?» – and answer: «Пять рубле́й!» 💰
That is the first minute of День 11. You already know it – so День 11 starts with a win.
- The shop. One is the seller, one is the buyer. Buyer: «Ско́лько сто́ит?» 🤷 – seller shows fingers: ✌️ «Два рубля́!» – buyer gives and takes: «Я покупа́ю!» Then swap.
- Rub and count. Rub your fingers on every «рубль», «рубля́», «рубле́й» – and count the coins aloud: «оди́н рубль, два рубля́… пять рубле́й!» 🪙
- Too much! The seller says a big price: «Сто рубле́й!» – the buyer throws up both hands: «Ско́лько?! Нет!» 😱
Play it with real coins – your hands remember the forms.
How much is it? – prices with pictures: count the coins and say the price.
Today's title. Tap it – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
Digit, number and word – what is the difference between ци́фра 5 and число́ 25? With paper and a pen. ✏️
Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
Don't have a hundred roubles – have a hundred friends.
«сто рубле́й» – today's form! And «друзе́й» works the same way: сто друзе́й. 🤸 Gesture: push the coins away on «не име́й сто рубле́й», open your arms wide to everybody on «сто друзе́й».
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words:
покупа́ть → поку́пка – something you bought 🛍️ · покупа́тель – a buyer
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Здра́вствуйте! Ско́лько сто́ит огуре́ц? – Два́дцать рубле́й. – Я покупа́ю пять огурцо́в! – Пять огурцо́в – сто рубле́й. – Я покупа́ю ры́бу! Ско́лько сто́ит? – Оди́н рубль. – Вот оди́н рубле́й! – Нет, Ска́ффлз! Оди́н рубль. Два рубля́. Пять рубле́й. – Р-р-р… Оди́н рубль. – А Сли́нки? – Мя́у…
Hello! How much is a cucumber? – Twenty roubles. – I'm buying five cucumbers! – Five cucumbers – a hundred roubles. – I'm buying the fish! How much is it? – One rouble. – Here is one roubles! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! One rouble. Two roubles. Five roubles. – Grrr… One rouble. – And Slinky? – Miaow…
- рубль after numbers, like огуре́ц (День 9):
- 1 рубль · 2, 3, 4 рубля́ · 5 … 20 рубле́й
- покупа́ть – family 1: покупа́ю, покупа́ешь, покупа́ет…
- Ско́лько сто́ит …? – How much is …? сто́ит – it costs.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
A pound was once a pound of silver – a weight. A rouble was a piece chopped (руби́ть) off a silver bar. Two old money stories – one weighs, one chops. 🪓
сто (100) is the cousin of English hundred and Latin centum – listen: cent, сто. 💯
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's rule, today's life. The three forms of День 9 come back with money the very next day – a rule used at once in a real situation is remembered (Rosenshine 2012: practise new material right away).
- A chunk first. «Ско́лько сто́ит?» was heard in Курс 1 as one piece; today it is taken apart. A chunk met again and understood is a strong memory: Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025.
- Real coins. Buying with real coins is a game with the body – the gesture and the word go together: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «оди́н рубле́й». The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
