📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – пять, де́сять, два́дцать (and all the numbers between, by ear).
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: счита́ть – я счита́ю, ты счита́ешь… (family 1, like знать).
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 8. Count your fingers: «Оди́н, два, три, четы́ре, пять!» 🖐️ And the riddle: «Без рук, без ног, а рису́ет.» ❄️
You know it – that is your first win today. Today the numbers grow: up to два́дцать – twenty.
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: how many cucumbers? Who is scared of them? Who counts to twenty? 👂
- Listen to the end of It changes with the number!
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
- Count with your fingers:
- -на́дцать = на де́сять – «on ten»: оди́н-на-дцать = one on ten = 11. ✋
– how many? You know it from
👂 Listen first. One finger up on every number. ☝️
Ска́ффлз (jumps back – she is scared of cucumbers): Мя-а-у!
★ How many? Three forms. 30 seconds. You have heard all three. Now look:
2, 3, 4 take the form of «нет огурца́» (Курс 1, День 29). 5 and more take the «нет» form for many: огурцо́в, кото́в (Курс 1, День 37). Scuffles still says «пять огуре́ц» – you don't. 😄
Count on your fingers – say every line aloud.
- Put some things on the table – pens, spoons, apples – and count them: «Оди́н, два, три… 🥄
- With cucumbers (or a picture of them) say the whole thing: « 🥒
- Ask someone (or the cat): «Ско́лько?» – and show the answer with your fingers.
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you count to 20 without looking? Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Look at the number – it decides the end. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Two small things left – two minutes.
пять, де́сять, два́дцать all end in ТЬ – a soft T.
- Smile a little 🙂, the tip of the tongue on the back of your top teeth: ть – almost like a tiny «ts».
Say them one after the other:
- And a secret: in два́дцать you don't hear the Д: «два́цать». 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning, count to 20 on your fingers – twice ten – and say one thing with a number: « 🥒
That is the first minute of День 10. You already know it – so День 10 starts with a win.
One person shows some fingers – the others say the number and «огурцо́в»: ✌️ «два огурца́!»
- Jump and count. Jump on every number from 1 to 20 – on пять, де́сять, пятна́дцать and два́дцать clap too. 👏
- Scuffles's game. Somebody puts a cucumber (or a picture of one) behind you. Turn round – jump back like Scuffles – and say: « 😄
When you move, you can't fall asleep – and the numbers stay.
Learn to count – Maya is the teacher, Richard is the student. Today's verb:
Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
Numbers 1–20 – the numbers of today, with pictures and sound.
Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
What number is it? – look at a number and say it, with your fingers and toy animals.
Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
Measure seven times – cut once. – Look before you leap.
Two numbers in one proverb: семь and оди́н. 🤸 Gesture: measure with both hands seven times on «семь раз отме́рь», then cut once with two fingers, like scissors ✂️, on «отре́жь».
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words:
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
One cucumber. Two cucumbers. Three cucumbers. Four cucumbers. Five cucumbers! – Miaow! Five cucumber! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! Five cucumbers. – Grrr… Five cucumbers. – Natasha, how many cucumbers? – I'm counting: six, seven, eight, nine, ten! – Ten and ten – twenty! – Well done, Richard! – Slinky, are you counting? – Miaow…
- ★ How many? Three forms:
- 1 – оди́н огуре́ц (as it is)
- 5 … 20 – пять огурцо́в (like «нет» for many)
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English does the same trick: thir-teen = three + ten, four-teen = four + ten. Russian: трина́дцать = три + на + де́сять – «three on ten». 😄
Three forms after a number sounds strange – but English has two (one cucumber, five cucumbers) and nobody thinks about it. Russian just has one more. 🥒
Why this way
- Numbers with things, not alone. «Пять огурцо́в» is learned as one piece – a chunk – before the rule. Chunks are how children and adults pick up the forms after numbers.
- The rule after the forms. The student hears огуре́ц – огурца́ – огурцо́в in the story first; only then the 30-second table. Noticing works best when the forms are already familiar (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
- Old forms come back. «нет огурца́» (Курс 1, День 29) and the «нет» for many (День 37) return here with a new job – a form met again in a new place is remembered better: Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025.
- Fingers. Counting on the fingers ties every number to a movement – a word with a gesture stays longer: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «пять огуре́ц» – and is scared of the cucumbers. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
