🔊 Звук дня · Sound of the day: the little break Ь

In пью and пьёшь there is a ь before the vowel – a tiny jump: п-ью, not «пу».

  • Say п, then at once ю (like English you): пью. And п + ёшь: пьёшь.
  • Compare: пу (no ь) – пью (with ь). A small difference – Russians hear it.
  • ё is always loud: пьёшь, пьёт, пьём. 30 seconds, every day.
🏠 Дома́шняя рабо́та · Homework – one small thing

Tomorrow at breakfast, with your cup: «Я пью чай.» – or «Я пью ко́фе.» ☕ And ask someone: «Ты пьёшь ко́фе?»
That is the first minute of День 12. You already know it – so День 12 starts with a win.

🤸 Жестова́я игра́ · Gesture game
  1. The café. One is the waiter with a notepad: «Ко́фе и́ли чай?» – the guest answers with the cup gesture: «Я пью чай!» Then: «Ско́лько сто́ит?» – «Пять рубле́й!» (День 10 comes back.) 💰
  2. Who drinks? Point and say: 👆 «я пью» · 🫳 «ты пьёшь» · 👉 «он пьёт» · ⭕ «мы пьём» · 🫵 «вы пьёте» · 🙌 «они́ пьют».
  3. Ко́фе – кафе́. Somebody says one of the two – you show a cup ☕ (ко́фе) or sit down at a table 🏠 (кафе́). Faster and faster! 😄

🦉 Посло́вица дня · proverb of the day · 👂 listen and read
Чай пить – не дрова́ руби́ть.

To drink tea is not to chop wood. – Drinking tea is easy work – sit down and have another cup. 😄
Today's verb пить – and руби́ть, the chopping verb of рубль (День 10)! 🤸 Gesture: a cup to your lips on «чай пить», then a big axe swing 🪓 on «дрова́ руби́ть» – and shake your head: не!

Здра́вствуйте! Ко́фе и́ли чай? – Я пью чай. – А я пью ко́фе. – Ната́ша, ты хо́чешь моро́женое? – Хочу́! – Я пить молоко́! – Нет, Ска́ффлз! Я пью молоко́. – Р-р-р… Я пью молоко́. – Мя́у! – Сли́нки! Это моё моро́женое! – Мы пьём чай и ко́фе. Ко́шки пьют молоко́.

💡 Пра́вило · Rule
  • пить – family 1 with ь and ё: пью, пьёшь, пьёт, пьём, пьёте, пьют.
  • ко́фе – a drink · кафе́ – a place. Both never change: в кафе́, без ко́фе.
  • моро́женое looks like an adjective (-ое) – it is «frozen (thing)».
ударе́ние – словарь ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).

ЛО́НДОН – словарь ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – словарь ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.

The sign is only a help for learners. Russian books don't print it, and you don't write it.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
😄 Для тех, кто говори́т по-англи́йски · For English speakers

Russians drink tea from a glass in a metal holder – a подста́канник – on long train journeys. 🚂☕
ко́фе is a «he» in proper Russian: «чёрный ко́фе» – though many people now say «чёрное». Even Russians argue about it! 😄

🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way

  • Real life early. The café is one of the first places a visitor speaks Russian – the student can use today's words the first day in Russia.
  • A strange verb, learned by ear. пить has the family-1 ends with a jump (пью, пьёшь). Heard in a story many times, it is learned as sound, not as a rule.
  • Two words that sound alike. ко́фе / кафе́ – the stress makes the difference; noticing such pairs trains the ear (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
  • Old words come back. моро́з (День 8), рубль (День 10), хочу́ (День 7) – a word met again in a new place is remembered better: Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025.
  • The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «я пить». The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
