День 17 из 32: Вчера́ я чита́л(а)
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 2 – вчера́ (from Курс 1), чита́л · чита́ла · чита́ли.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: чита́ть → вчера́ я чита́л (a man) · я чита́ла (a woman) · мы чита́ли. ★ The past: take away -ть, add -л -ла -ло -ли
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 16. Two things you do every day: «Я пью чай. Я рабо́таю.» ☕💻
You know it – that is your first win today. Today they go back one day: вчера́ – yesterday. 👈
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: what did Natasha read yesterday? And Richard? What did Slinky do? 👂
- Listen to the end: Ри́чард чита́л – Ната́ша чита́ла – мы чита́ли. A man and a woman say it differently!
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
- вчера́ 👈 – yesterday · сего́дня 👇 – today. You know both from Курс 1 (День 22).
- Thumb back over your shoulder = the past. Do it on every «-л». 👈
👂 Listen first. Thumb back 👈 on every «-л, -ла, -ли».
- Ната́ша: Сего́дня я чита́ю газе́ту. А вчера́? Вчера́ я чита́ла журна́л. 📰
- Ри́чард: А я вчера́ чита́л кни́гу. 📖
- Ната́ша: Ри́чард чита́л. Ната́ша чита́ла. Мы чита́ли!
Ска́ффлз (sitting on the newspaper): Вчера́ я чита́л газе́ту!
- Ната́ша: Нет, Ска́ффлз! Ты ко́шка – она́. Я чита́ла! – Ска́ффлз: Р-р-р… Вчера́ я чита́ла газе́ту. 😾
- Ната́ша: А Сли́нки? Вчера́ Сли́нки спала́. И сего́дня спит! –
Сли́нки: Мур-р… 😴
- Ната́ша: И ра́дио вчера́ рабо́тало! 📻
★ The past. 30 seconds. You have heard all four. Now look – take away -ть, add the end:
| он, я (a man), ты (a man) 👨 | чита́л · рабо́тал · пил |
| она́, я (a woman), ты (a woman) 👩 | чита́ла · рабо́тала · спала́ |
| оно́ (ра́дио, окно́) 📻 | рабо́тало · бы́ло |
| мы, вы, они́ 🙌 | чита́ли · рабо́тали · спа́ли |
No six forms in the past – only four! The past asks «a man or a woman?», not «я or ты?». The colours are the colours of the word pages: blue он, pink она́, yellow оно́, green они́. Scuffles still says «я чита́л» – you don't. 😄
Say every line aloud – thumb back 👈 on the past.
Сего́дня я чита́ю. 👇 Вчера́ я чита́л. 👈 (a man)
Сего́дня я чита́ю. 👇 Вчера́ я чита́ла. 👈 (a woman)
Ри́чард рабо́тал. Ната́ша рабо́тала. Мы рабо́тали.
Сли́нки спала́. Ра́дио рабо́тало. 📻
Вчера́ я пил(а́) чай. ☕
- Take yesterday's newspaper (or any book): «Вчера́ я чита́л(а) газе́ту.» 👈📰
- One thing you did yesterday: «Вчера́ я рабо́тал(а).» – or «Вчера́ я пил(а́) чай.»
- Ask the cat: «Ска́ффлз, ты вчера́ спала́?» 😴
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A man, a woman, a thing or many? The end decides. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Л at the end of чита́л is deep and hard – like the l in English full or milk.
- The tip of the tongue on the top teeth, the back of the tongue low – л sounds almost like a short «w».
- чита́л – чита́ла – чита́ли: in -ли the л is soft again (smile 🙂) – like рубль (День 10).
- Hard – soft: чита́л – чита́ли. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow, say one thing you did yesterday: «Вчера́ я чита́л(а).» – or «Вчера́ я рабо́тал(а).» 👈
That is the first minute of День 18. You already know it – so День 18 starts with a win.
- Today – yesterday. Somebody says «Сего́дня!» – everybody points down 👇 and says «я чита́ю». «Вчера́!» – thumb back 👈: «я чита́л(а)!» Faster and faster.
- A man or a woman? Show a photo of a man – «он чита́л!» 👨; a woman – «она́ чита́ла!» 👩; the radio – «оно́ рабо́тало!» 📻; the family – «они́ чита́ли!» 🙌
- Yesterday's mime. Mime something you did yesterday – the others guess: «Ты танцева́л(а)!» 💃 «Ты рисова́л(а)!» ✏️ «Ты спал(а́)!» 😴
The thumb over the shoulder is your past tense – your hand learns it first.
Done the work? Then go for a walk with a free heart.
Two pasts in a row: сде́лал – «did, finished». 🤸 Gesture: wipe your hands, the work is done, on «сде́лал де́ло», then walk on the spot with a big smile on «гуля́й сме́ло». 🚶
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words: ВЧЕРА́ · ЧИТА́Л · ЧИТА́ЛА · ЧИТА́ЛИ · РАБО́ТАЛО
Сего́дня Ната́ша чита́ет газе́ту.
Вчера́ она́ чита́ла журна́л.
Вчера́ Ри́чард чита́л кни́гу. Они́ чита́ли! 📖
Вчера́ Сли́нки спала́. Ска́ффлз то́же спала́. 😴
А вы? Что вы вчера́ чита́ли?
-л – the past was once an adjective: «чита́л» = «(a man) who has read». That is why it has he / she / it / they like an adjective – not six persons. 🤓
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Today I'm reading the newspaper. And yesterday? Yesterday I read a magazine. – And yesterday I read a book. – Richard read. Natasha read. We read! – Yesterday I read (a man's form) the newspaper! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! You are a cat – a «she». I read (a woman's form)! – Grrr… Yesterday I read the newspaper. – And Slinky? Yesterday Slinky slept. And today she's sleeping! – Purr… – And the radio worked yesterday!
- ★ The past: take away -ть, add:
- -л – он, a man: чита́л
- -ла – она́, a woman: чита́ла
- -ло – оно́: ра́дио рабо́тало
- -ли – мы, вы, они́: чита́ли
- я and ты: a man says «я чита́л», a woman «я чита́ла».
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English «I read» – you can't hear if it is today or yesterday (read – read!). Russian always tells you: чита́ю – чита́л. 😄
A man and a woman write different letters: Natasha writes «я чита́ла», Richard «я чита́л». In a Russian chat you know who wrote it! 💬
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- The rule after the forms. The student hears чита́л, чита́ла, чита́ли in the story first; then the 30-second table (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
- Colours that the student already knows. The endings take the gender colours of the word pages (Natalia's colour code) – the same idea as кра́сный · кра́сная · кра́сное (Курс 1, День 23).
- A gesture for time. Thumb back = the past, hands down = now. A word with a gesture stays longer: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- Four forms, not six. After six persons (День 1–8) the past is a relief – the student notices how much easier it is.
- The cat makes the mistakes. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
