Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Richard, where were you? – I was in the shop! – And you, Natasha? Where were you? – I was at home. – Scuffles, where were you? – I was (a man's form) outside! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! You are a cat. I was (a woman's form) outside. – Grrr… I was outside. – And Slinky was at home. She is always at home. – Miaow. – And yesterday we were at the café!
- быть in the past: был (он, a man) · была́ (она́, a woman) · бы́ло (оно́) · бы́ли (мы, вы, они́)
- In the present Russians say nothing: «Я до́ма» – I am at home.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
Today «am» is invisible – yesterday it appears: «Я до́ма» (I am at home) → «Я был до́ма» (I was at home). Russian needs «быть» only for the past and the future. 😄
– the English where have you been and where were you are one simple question in Russian.
Why this way
- The most frequent past. был, была́, бы́ли come in every story about yesterday; they come the day after the rule, so the rule is used at once.
- A real everyday question. «Где ты был?» is asked in every Russian home in the evening – the student can use it today.
- The places come back. в магази́не, в кафе́, на у́лице (Курс 1 and Group 2) return in a new sentence – spaced returns: Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025.
- The cat makes the mistakes. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
