You know it – that is your first win today. Now the phone rings: дзынь! 📱
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: who called? Is Katya at home? Whom does Richard call? 👂
- Listen: звоню́, звони́шь, звони́т – the end is loud every time.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
- Алло́! – the first word on every Russian phone call. 🤙
- Ка́тю мо́жно? – May I speak to Katya? (Ка́тя → Ка́тю – like «хочу́ ка́шу» in Курс 1, День 19.) мо́жно – the cousin of мочь (День 7)!
- Ка́ти нет. – Katya isn't here (the «нет» form of День 29 of Курс 1).
👂 Listen first. Hand as a phone 🤙 on every «алло́» and «звоню́».
- Ната́ша: Алло́! – A voice: Алло́! Ка́тю мо́жно?
- Ната́ша: Ка́ти нет. Она́ на рабо́те. Позвони́те за́втра!
- Ри́чард: Ната́ша, кто звони́л? – Ната́ша: Звони́ла Ма́ша. Она́ бу́дет звони́ть за́втра.
- Ри́чард: А я звоню́ ма́ме! 🤙
Ска́ффлз (the phone in her paws): Алло́! Я звони́шь!
- Ната́ша: Нет, Ска́ффлз! Я звоню́. Ты звони́шь. – Ска́ффлз: Р-р-р… Алло́! Я звоню́! 😾
Сли́нки (asleep on the ringing phone): … 😴
🌱 The seed of the day: one phone call – present (звоню́), past (звони́л), future (бу́дет звони́ть). Everything you learned this week!
Say every line aloud, hand as a phone 🤙.
Алло́! Алло́! 🤙
Алло́! Ка́тю мо́жно? – Ка́ти нет. Позвони́те за́втра!
Я звоню́. Ты звони́шь. Он звони́т.
Мы звони́м. Вы звони́те. Они́ звоня́т.
Кто звони́л? – Звони́ла Ма́ша.

- Say whom you call: «Я звоню́ ма́ме.» – or «дру́гу», «Ри́чарду».
- Ask someone: «Кто звони́л?»
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
звони́ть – the loud syllable stays at the end in every form: звоню́, звони́шь, звони́т.
- Many Russians say «зво́нит» – and other Russians frown! 😄 The good form is звони́т.
- Clap on the end: звонИ́Т 👏 – звонЯ́Т 👏
- 30 seconds, every day – and you speak better than many Russians!
Tomorrow, hand as a phone 🤙: «Алло́! Ка́тю мо́жно?» – and answer: «Ка́ти нет. Позвони́те за́втра!»
That is the first minute of День 23. You already know it – so День 23 starts with a win.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 23 · С молоко́м и́ли без? ▶
- Telephone. Two people back to back, hands as phones: «Алло́!» – «Алло́! Ма́шу мо́жно?» – «Ма́ши нет! Позвони́те за́втра!» 🤙 Then swap names: Ка́тю – Ка́ти, Ма́шу – Ма́ши.
- Who called? Somebody rings like a phone «Дзынь!» – everybody asks «Кто звони́л?» – one answers «Звони́ла ма́ма!» / «Звони́л Ри́чард!»
- Wrong number. «Алло́! Это кафе́?» – «Нет, это до́ма!» 😄
Hello, may I speak to Katya? – a phone joke. Listen first: why is the answer funny? 😄
Today's title. Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
What is the phone number? – say the numbers of a phone number aloud, like Russians do. 📱
Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
Speech is silver, silence is gold.
On the phone you need words – but Slinky prefers gold. 😄 🤸 Gesture: open your hand like a mouth on «сло́во – серебро́», finger on your lips 🤫 on «молча́ние – зо́лото».
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words: АЛЛО́ · ТЕЛЕФО́Н · ЗВОНЮ́ · ЗВОНИ́Л · МО́ЖНО
Дзынь-дзынь! Звони́т телефо́н. 📱
– Алло́! Ка́тю мо́жно? – Ка́ти нет.
Звони́ла Ма́ша. Она́ бу́дет звони́ть за́втра.
Ри́чард звони́т ма́ме. Сли́нки спит на телефо́не. 😴
телефо́н ← Greek tele (far) + phone (sound) – the same in English · моби́льник – a mobile (everyday word)
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Алло́! – Алло́! Ка́тю мо́жно? – Ка́ти нет. Она́ на рабо́те. Позвони́те за́втра! – Ната́ша, кто звони́л? – Звони́ла Ма́ша. Она́ бу́дет звони́ть за́втра. – А я звоню́ ма́ме! – Алло́! Я звони́шь! – Нет, Ска́ффлз! Я звоню́. Ты звони́шь. – Р-р-р… Алло́! Я звоню́!
Hello! – Hello! May I speak to Katya? – Katya isn't here. She's at work. Call tomorrow! – Natasha, who called? – Masha called. She will call tomorrow. – And I'm calling Mum! – Hello! I calls! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! I call. You call. – Grrr… Hello! I'm calling!
- звони́ть – family 2, the end is always loud: звоню́, звони́шь, звони́т, звони́м, звони́те, звоня́т.
- Past: звони́л, звони́ла · future: бу́ду звони́ть.
- Я звоню́ ма́ме – to Mum (the «кому́?» form of Курс 1, День 31).
- Ка́тю мо́жно? – May I speak to…? · Ка́ти нет. – … isn't here.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
«Алло́!» – Russians answer the phone with a word that came from English hallo – and the English came from French. 📞
A phone number is said in Russian in groups: 123-45-67 = сто два́дцать три – со́рок пять – шестьдеся́т семь. 😮
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Real life. The phone call is one of the five promises of Курс 2 («the shop, the café, the doctor, the phone»).
- All three tenses in one call. звоню́, звони́л, бу́дет звони́ть – the week's grammar used in one everyday scene.
- A useful stress. звони́т is a famous mistake of Russians themselves; learning it right from the start is easier than unlearning it later.
- The cat makes the mistakes. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
