🙌 Today's words: С ДНЁМ РОЖДЕ́НИЯ! · ПОДА́РОК · ГОД · ЛЕТ
Сего́дня у Ната́ши день рожде́ния! 🎂
Вчера́ Ри́чард был в магази́не. Вот пода́рок! 🎁
Ска́ффлз пять лет. Сли́нки то́же пять лет.

пода́рок ← дари́ть – to give a present · дар – a gift, a talent ✨
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
С днём рожде́ния, Ната́ша! – Спаси́бо! – Вот пода́рок! – Ой, спаси́бо! Вчера́ ты был в магази́не? – Да! – Ска́ффлз, а ско́лько тебе́ лет? – Мне пять год! – Нет, Ска́ффлз! Оди́н год, два го́да… пять лет. – Р-р-р… Мне пять лет. – Мя́у! – А за́втра мы бу́дем есть торт!

- С днём рожде́ния! – Happy birthday!
- Ско́лько тебе́ лет? (to a friend) · Ско́лько вам лет? (polite) – Мне … лет.
- год after numbers: 1 год · 2, 3, 4 го́да · 5 … 20 лет
- Past + present + future: был – есть – бу́дет.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
«Мне пять лет» = «to me five summers». лет really is the old word for summers – ле́то! ☀️ Russians count their age in summers.
Russians don't say «Happy birthday» before the day – it brings bad luck. Only on the day, or after! 🎂
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Three tenses in one real event. A birthday has a yesterday (the present was bought), a today and a tomorrow (the cake) – the tenses of День 17–20 are used together.
- Numbers come back. год – го́да – лет repeats the three forms of День 9 with a surprise (лет) – Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025.
- Sing it. The birthday song is a chunk everybody uses at once; songs help sounds and words stay.
- The cat makes the mistakes. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
