День 23 из 32: С молоко́м и́ли без?
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – с, без, са́хар (молоко́ and лимо́н you know from Курс 1).
🗣️ Say it as one piece: «Ко́фе с молоко́м и́ли без?» · «С молоко́м!» · «Без са́хара.» – and «со стола́» (Курс 1)
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 22. Hand as a phone 🤙: «Алло́! Ка́тю мо́жно?» – «Ка́ти нет. Позвони́те за́втра!»
You know it – that is your first win today. Now put the phone down and make a cup of coffee. ☕
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: how does Natasha drink her coffee? And Richard his tea? What does Scuffles want? 👂
- Listen to the ends: с молоко́м, с са́харом – без са́хара.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
- с + -ом = with: с молоко́м, с са́харом, с лимо́ном. You know this с from Курс 1, День 30 («С чем?»).
- без + -а = without: без молока́, без са́хара – like «нет са́хара».
- со стола́ – another с: off the table (Курс 1, День 33). с чем? = with · с чего́? = off. The end tells you which. 👀
👂 Listen first. Two fingers together 🤞 on «с», hands apart 👐 on «без».
- Ри́чард: Ната́ша, ко́фе с молоко́м и́ли без? – Ната́ша: С молоко́м! И с са́харом. ☕
- Ри́чард: А я пью чай с лимо́ном. Без са́хара. 🍋
Ска́ффлз: А я хочу́ чай с сыр!
- Ната́ша: Нет, Ска́ффлз! С сы́ром. Но ко́шки не пьют чай! – Ска́ффлз: Р-р-р… Молоко́ с сы́ром! 😾
Сли́нки (jumps onto the table): Мя́у! – Ната́ша: Сли́нки! Со стола́! – Вот. Сли́нки со стола́ – на пол.
- Ната́ша: С молоко́м – вку́сно. Без молока́ – то́же вку́сно! 😋
🌱 The seed of the day: one little word с – two jobs. с молоко́м (with) and со стола́ (off). Natasha's order: from → to: со стола́ → на пол.
Say every line aloud, with your cup ☕.
Ко́фе с молоко́м и́ли без? 🤞👐
С молоко́м и с са́харом! ☕
Чай с лимо́ном, без са́хара. 🍋
Сли́нки, со стола́! – Со стола́ → на пол. 🐈
С молоко́м – вку́сно. Без молока́ – то́же вку́сно!
- Make your cup and say it: «Я пью ко́фе с молоко́м.» – or «чай с лимо́ном», «чай без са́хара». ☕
- Ask someone: «Ты пьёшь ко́фе с молоко́м и́ли без?»
- Take something off the table: «Со стола́!» – and put it back: «На стол.»
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. с or без? Look at the end. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Х in са́хар is a breath from the back of the throat – like the Scottish loch or a cat's hiss. 🐈
- Not «k», not English «h» – a soft scratching air: х-х-х.
- са́хар, хорошо́, хочу́ – the same х.
- Breathe on cold hands: ххх – that's it! 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow at breakfast, with your cup: «Я пью ко́фе (чай) с …» – or «без …» ☕
That is the first minute of День 24. You already know it – so День 24 starts with a win.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 24 · Вчера́, сего́дня, за́втра ▶
- The café again. Waiter: «Ко́фе с молоко́м и́ли без?» – guest: two fingers together 🤞 «С молоко́м!» or hands apart 👐 «Без!» Then: «С са́харом?» «С лимо́ном?»
- With or off? Put a cup on the table. Somebody says «с молоко́м!» – you pour; «со стола́!» – you take the cup off the table. 😄
- Without! Say what you don't want: «Чай без са́хара!» «Ко́фе без молока́!» «Суп без со́ли!» 🧂
Happy new school year! – coffee with milk and sugar, then a box of Maya's toys: «беру́ слона́ со стола́» – «с чем?» or «с чего́?» 🐘
Today's two с, side by side. Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
How do you like your coffee? – with milk, with sugar, without… ☕
Tap the title – the page opens; the bar at its top brings you back here.
With your darling, even a hut is paradise.
с ми́лым – today's с + -ым: with the one you love. Natasha says it about Richard. ❤️ 🤸 Gesture: hold hands with somebody (or yourself) on «с ми́лым», draw a little roof over your head on «в шалаше́».
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words: С МОЛОКО́М · БЕЗ · СА́ХАР · СО СТОЛА́
Ната́ша пьёт ко́фе с молоко́м и с са́харом. ☕
Ри́чард пьёт чай с лимо́ном, без са́хара. 🍋
Ска́ффлз хо́чет молоко́ с сы́ром. 😄
Сли́нки пры́гает со стола́ на пол. 🐈
без → бездо́мный – homeless (без + дом!) · беззу́бый – toothless 😄
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Natasha, coffee with milk or without? – With milk! And with sugar. – And I drink tea with lemon. Without sugar. – And I want tea with cheese (wrong form)! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! With cheese. But cats don't drink tea! – Grrr… Milk with cheese! – Miaow! – Slinky! Off the table! There. Slinky off the table – onto the floor. – With milk it's tasty. Without milk it's tasty too!
- с + -ом (с чем?) = with: с молоко́м, с са́харом, с лимо́ном
- без + -а (без чего́?) = without: без молока́, без са́хара
- с (со) + -а (с чего́?) = off, from: со стола́ → на стол
- The end tells you which с it is.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English «with» and «off» are two words – Russian has one «с» for both, and the end of the next word decides. 😄
Russians drink tea with jam – чай с варе́ньем – a spoonful in the mouth, then a sip. Try it! 🍓☕
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Two meanings side by side. с молоко́м (with) and со стола́ (off) are shown together on purpose – the student notices that the ending, not the little word, carries the meaning (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
- from → to. «со стола́ → на пол» keeps Natasha's direction rule (decisions 6 Nov §1).
- Real life. «С молоко́м и́ли без?» is the first question in every Russian café and kitchen – Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025 for the café words of День 11 coming back.
- The cat makes the mistakes. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
