День 2 из 40: Что где стои́т?
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 4 – стои́т, лежи́т, виси́т, ла́мпа.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: висе́ть – ла́мпа виси́т → карти́ны вися́т
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 1: look round your room and say where three things or people are:
«Я сижу́ на сту́ле. Ко́шка лежи́т на дива́не. Ча́шка…» – what does a cup do? Here is the answer: Ча́шка стои́т! ☕ A cup stands.
You remembered it – that is your first win today. ✅
- Tap a word and listen. Then show it with one hand: the hand stands up ✋ – lies flat 🫳 – hangs from the wrist.
- Yesterday a person sat, stood and lay. Today things do it too: in Russian every thing stands, lies or hangs.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
The rule of the eye: standing up, on its bottom or its legs – стои́т (ча́шка, стул, буты́лка). Flat – лежи́т (кни́га, телефо́н, нож). Hanging, nothing under it – виси́т (ла́мпа, карти́на).
👂 Listen first. Show every verb with your hand: ✋ стои́т · 🫳 лежи́т · 🖐️⬇️ виси́т.
- Ната́ша: Где ча́шка? – Ча́шка стои́т на столе́. ☕ А кни́га? – Кни́га лежи́т на столе́. 📖
- Ри́чард: А ла́мпа? Ла́мпа виси́т. 💡
Ска́ффлз: (on the table) Ла́мпа лежи́т!
- Ната́ша: Нет, Ска́ффлз! Ла́мпа не лежи́т. Ла́мпа виси́т!
Ска́ффлз: Р-р-р… (she pushes the cup with her paw – it falls on its side) А тепе́рь ча́шка лежи́т! 😼
- Ната́ша: Ска́ффлз! 😱 –
Сли́нки: Мя́у. (she sits on the shelf, very still, like a picture)
🌱 The seed of the day: one thing – three verbs. The same cup стои́т on its bottom, лежи́т on its side and виси́т on a hook. Russian looks at how a thing is there.
Say every line aloud and show it with your hand: ✋ 🫳 🖐️⬇️
Ча́шка стои́т. ✋ Кни́га лежи́т. 🫳
Телефо́н лежи́т. Ла́мпа виси́т. 🖐️⬇️
Карти́на виси́т на стене́. 🖼️
Ой! Тепе́рь ча́шка лежи́т! 😄
- Look at your table. What стои́т, what лежи́т? – Ча́шка стои́т. Телефо́н лежи́т.
- Look up and at the walls: what виси́т? – Ла́мпа виси́т. Карти́на виси́т на стене́.
- Do the trick: put your cup on its side – Ча́шка лежи́т! Stand it up again – Ча́шка стои́т!
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Look at the thing: standing, flat or hanging? 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Ч in ча́шка is always soft – like English ch in cheese, but softer, with a smile. 😊 It never becomes hard: ча́шка, чай, чита́ть – all soft.
- Smile and say: ч-ч-ч – like a train far away. 🚂
- Then: ча́-шка – ча́шка стои́т – ча́шка лежи́т.
- 30 seconds, every day. This is aerobics for the tongue.
Tomorrow morning, say three sentences about your room – one with each verb:
«… стои́т. … лежи́т. … виси́т.» – for example: «Стул стои́т. Телефо́н лежи́т. Ла́мпа виси́т.»
That is the first minute of День 3. You already know it – so День 3 starts with a win.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 3 · Сади́тесь! – Се́ли – Сиди́м ▶
- Thing → hand. Someone names a thing – you show it with your hand and say the verb: «Ча́шка!» – ✋ «стои́т!» · «Кни́га!» – 🫳 «лежи́т!» · «Ла́мпа!» – 🖐️⬇️ «виси́т!». Faster and faster.
- The cup trick. One person moves a cup: up, on its side, on a hook (or holds it up by the handle). The others say: «стои́т!» – «лежи́т!» – «виси́т!» 😄
- Me and the things. Stand up: «Я стою́ – стул стои́т.» Sit: «Я сижу́ – ко́шка сиди́т.» The table always stands!
Remembering a word with the hand and the eyes works better than reading it again.
Natasha's own video lesson: she walks round her room and says what stands (a chair, a fridge, a kettle), what lies (a knife, a book, a carpet) and what hangs (a lamp, a picture) – and makes a cup hang! The bar at its top brings you back here.
A house is beautiful not for its corners, but for its pies.
A home is good because of the people and the food, not the things in it. «изба́» – an old wooden village house; «красна́» – an old word for «beautiful» (Кра́сная пло́щадь!). 🤸 Gesture: draw the four corners of a room in the air… then pat your tummy and smile on «пирога́ми».
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words: СТОИ́Т · ЛЕЖИ́Т · ВИСИ́Т · ЛА́МПА
Ча́шка стои́т на столе́. Кни́га лежи́т на столе́.
Телефо́н то́же лежи́т. Ла́мпа виси́т.
Ска́ффлз сиди́т на столе́. Ой! Тепе́рь ча́шка лежи́т!
А у вас? Что стои́т, что лежи́т, что виси́т?
лежа́ть – to lie · ложи́ться – to lie down (День 4) · лежа́к – a sun lounger
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Где ча́шка? – Ча́шка стои́т на столе́. А кни́га? – Кни́га лежи́т на столе́. – А ла́мпа? Ла́мпа виси́т. – Ла́мпа лежи́т! – Нет, Ска́ффлз! Ла́мпа не лежи́т. Ла́мпа виси́т! – Р-р-р… А тепе́рь ча́шка лежи́т! – Ска́ффлз! – Мя́у.
Where is the cup? – The cup is (standing) on the table. And the book? – The book is (lying) on the table. – And the lamp? The lamp is hanging. – The lamp is lying! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! The lamp is not lying. The lamp is hanging! – Grrr… And now the cup is lying! – Scuffles! – Miaow.
- стои́т – stands up (on its bottom or legs): ча́шка, стул, стол, буты́лка
- лежи́т – lies flat: кни́га, телефо́н, нож, ковёр
- виси́т – hangs: ла́мпа, карти́на, пальто́
- Many things: стоя́т, лежа́т, вися́т – the -ишь family of Курс 2 (говоря́т).
- Где? → на столе́, на стене́, на полу́ (-е, Курс 1).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English says a book is on the table. Russian also says how: «Кни́га лежи́т на столе́». And a plate? It has a bottom – «Таре́лка стои́т». A bird on a branch? «Пти́ца сиди́т» – birds sit! 🐦 You will soon «see in Russian». 😄
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- A win in the first minute. Yesterday's homework asked «what does a cup do?» – today starts with the answer. Guessing before you are told helps the answer stay: Kornell, Hays · Bjork 2009, the pretesting effect.
- One thing, three verbs. The same cup stands, lies and hangs. Seeing the difference side by side is the fastest way to notice it (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
- The hand does the verb. A standing, lying or hanging hand ties each verb to a picture in the body: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «Ла́мпа лежи́т!» – and then makes the cup lie. The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
