День 35 из 40: Иду́, что́бы купи́ть
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 4 – что́бы, купи́ть, хлеб, молоко́.
💬 Long sentence of the day: Я иду́ в магази́н, что́бы купи́ть хлеб. – «что́бы» + the infinitive (the dictionary form)
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 34: «За́втра я иду́ в магази́н.» 🛒 and «Е́сли пойдёт дождь, я возьму́ зо́нтик.» ☂️
You remembered it – that is your first win today. ✅
- Tap and listen. Show it: что́бы – point at a target far away 🎯 (what for?) · купи́ть – give coins with your fingers 🪙
- что́бы + the verb as in the dictionary: купи́ть, есть, спать, чита́ть.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a picture – the dictionary opens.
= Я иду́ в магази́н, что́бы купи́ть хлеб. 🎯
👂 Listen first. Point at the target on «что́бы». 🎯
🌱 The seed of the day: «Я иду́…, что́бы…» – where you go and what for. And «потому́ что» from День 33 is back! 😄
Say every line aloud with the gestures. 🚶🎯
Я иду́ в магази́н, что́бы купи́ть хлеб. 🍞
Я иду́ в магази́н, что́бы купи́ть молоко́. 🥛
Я иду́ на ку́хню, что́бы есть. 🍽️
Я иду́ в спа́льню, что́бы спать. 😴
- Where do you go today – and what for? «Я иду́ в магази́н, что́бы купи́ть…» 🛒
- «Я учу́ ру́сский, что́бы…» – говори́ть с ба́бушкой? чита́ть кни́ги? 📚
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. After что́бы – the dictionary form. 📖
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
молоко́ – only the last О is stressed. The other two О sound like А: «ма-ла-ко́». 🥛
- The same: хорошо́ – «харашо́», молодо́й – «маладо́й».
- Say it slowly, then fast: ма-ла-ко́ – малако́!
- 30 seconds, every day. This is aerobics for the tongue.
Tomorrow: кото́рый – «who, which». Say two short sentences: «Э́то кот. Кот съел сыр.» 🐈🧀 And once: «Я учу́ ру́сский, что́бы…» 🎯
That is the first minute of День 36. You already know it – so День 36 starts with a win.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 36 · Кот, кото́рый съел сыр ▶
- What for? The leader walks to a place in the room – the others ask: «Заче́м?» (what for?) – the leader answers: «Я иду́ на ку́хню, что́бы пить чай!» ☕ · «Я иду́ к окну́, что́бы смотре́ть на дождь!» 🌧️
- The shop. One is the shopkeeper. The others say: «Я пришёл / пришла́, что́бы купи́ть хлеб!» – and pay with pretend coins 🪙.
- Cat logic. Everybody answers like Scuffles: «Я иду́ на ку́хню, что́бы есть… сыр Ри́чарда!» 😹
We eat to live, we don’t live to eat.
A very old saying (from ancient Greece), loved by Russian grandmothers. Two «что́бы» in one sentence! 😄 Scuffles does not agree. 🤸 Gesture: point at your plate… then open your arms wide – «life!»
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words: ЧТО́БЫ · КУПИ́ТЬ · ХЛЕБ · МОЛОКО́
Ната́ша идёт в магази́н, что́бы купи́ть хлеб.
Ри́чард идёт в магази́н, что́бы купи́ть сыр.
Почему́? Потому́ что Ска́ффлз съе́ла его́ сыр! 🧀
Е́сли пойдёт дождь, они́ возьму́т зо́нтик. ☂️
Look: потому́ что (День 33), е́сли (День 34) and что́бы (today) – three long-sentence words in one story! 💬
хлеб – хле́бушек (dear little bread – grannies say it) · молоко́ – моло́чный (milky, -ный from День 30)
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Я иду́ в магази́н, что́бы купи́ть хлеб и молоко́. – А я иду́ в магази́н, что́бы купи́ть сыр – потому́ что Ска́ффлз съе́ла мой сыр! – А я иду́ на ку́хню, что́бы ем! – Не «что́бы ем» – «что́бы есть». По́сле «что́бы» – как в словаре́. – Я иду́ на ку́хню, что́бы есть… сыр Ри́чарда! – Ска́ффлз!
I'm going to the shop to buy bread and milk. – And I'm going to the shop to buy cheese – because Scuffles ate my cheese! – And I'm going to the kitchen to I eat! (Scuffles's mistake) – Not «to I eat» – «to eat». After «что́бы» – as in the dictionary. – I'm going to the kitchen to eat… Richard's cheese! – Scuffles!
- что́бы – in order to, to (what for?)
- что́бы + the infinitive (dictionary form): что́бы купи́ть, что́бы есть
- sentence + , что́бы + verb
- Заче́м? – what for? → что́бы…
- МОЛОКО́ sounds «малако́»
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English: «I go to buy» – one little word «to». Russian: «Я иду́, что́бы купи́ть». But after motion verbs Russians often drop что́бы, just like English: «Я иду́ купи́ть хлеб.» Both are right! 🙂
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Three link words, one story. Потому́ что, е́сли, что́бы appear together in «Чита́йте са́ми» – the student sees them as a family (Nation 2013, learning in context).
- The dictionary form after что́бы. A simple rule the student can check in the dictionary at once – a rule that is easy to see is learned faster (DeKeyser 2005, what makes grammar difficult).
- Real goals. «Я учу́ ру́сский, что́бы…» – the student says why they learn; personal sentences are remembered better (Rogers · Kuiper · Kirker 1977, the self-reference effect).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «что́бы ем» – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
