День 9 из 40: Иду́!
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – идти́, шко́ла, магази́н. (Old friends: куда́?, рабо́та, ку́хня.)
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: идти́ – я иду́, ты идёшь, он идёт… ➡️
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Stand up! Your homework from День 8: walk across your room and say the old words of Курс 1: «Я иду́!» 🚶 – and tell the riddle: «Сиди́т де́вица в темни́це, а коса́ на у́лице.» – Морко́вь! 🥕
You remembered it – that is your first win today. ✅
- Tap and listen. Then walk: point forward with one arm and go – one way, now.
- «Я иду́» is an old friend from Курс 1. Today it gets all its forms – and its logic.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens.
идти́ = to go on foot, one way, now. ➡️ Russian asks куда́? – where to? – like День 5 («на стол»): в магази́н, в шко́лу, на рабо́ту.
👂 Listen first. Walk on the spot and point forward on every «иду́». ➡️
- Ната́ша: Я иду́ в магази́н! 🛍️
- Ри́чард: А я иду́ на рабо́ту. 📒 – Ната́ша: Куда́ ты идёшь, Ри́чард? – Ри́чард: На рабо́ту! Пока́!
Ска́ффлз: (walking to the kitchen, tail up) Я идёт на ку́хню!
- Ната́ша: Нет, Ска́ффлз! Я иду́, ты идёшь. Ты идёшь на ку́хню.
Ска́ффлз: Я иду́ на ку́хню… к сы́ру! 😼 –
Сли́нки: (walking slowly to the window) Мя́у.
🌱 The seed of the day: идти́ – on foot ➡️, one way, now. Where to? в шко́лу, на рабо́ту, в магази́н – a «she» word changes -а → -у, a «he» word stays. And: я иду́ – ты идёшь – the -ёшь family.
Say every line aloud and walk: ➡️
Я иду́. 👆 Ты идёшь. 🫳 Он идёт. 👉
Мы идём. ⭕ Вы идёте? 🫵 Они́ иду́т. 🙌
Я иду́ в магази́н. Ри́чард идёт на рабо́ту.
Ска́ффлз идёт на ку́хню… к сы́ру! 😼
- Walk across the room: «Я иду́!» ➡️ – then say where to: «Я иду́ на ку́хню.»
- Ask someone at the door: «Куда́ ты идёшь?» – «В магази́н!»
- Where do you go today? «Сего́дня я иду́ на рабо́ту / в шко́лу / в магази́н.»
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Look at the end of the word. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Listen to Д: in иду́ it is hard – before У. In идёт, иди́ it is soft – before Ё and И: the tongue is flat and high, like a little «й» after it.
- Say: ду – дё – ди · then и-ду́ – и-дёт – и-ди́!
- Hard – soft – soft. The letter after Д decides. 👂
- 30 seconds, every day. This is aerobics for the tongue.
Tomorrow morning, when you go out of a room, say where you are going: «Я иду́ на ку́хню!» – «Я иду́ в магази́н!» ➡️
That is the first minute of День 10. You already know it – so День 10 starts with a win.
- Where are you going? One person walks – the others ask «Куда́ ты идёшь?» – the walker answers: «На ку́хню!» «В магази́н!» «В шко́лу!» 🚶
- Six persons. Point and walk together: 👆 «я иду́» · 🫳 «ты идёшь» · 👉 «он идёт» · ⭕ «мы идём» · 🫵 «вы идёте» · 🙌 «они́ иду́т».
- Stop – go! On «Иди́!» everybody walks, on «Стой!» everybody stands still (стоя́ть, День 1!). 😄
Remembering a word with the whole body works better than reading it again.
The road is mastered by the one who walks.
Just keep going – step by step you get there. Like your Russian, 15 minutes a day! «иду́щий» – the one who is going, from идти́. 🤸 Gesture: walk on the spot, slowly but without stopping.
Read every line aloud, slowly. Every word is one you know. Tap a word to check. ✋
🙌 Today's words: ИДТИ́ · ШКО́ЛА · МАГАЗИ́Н
Ната́ша идёт в магази́н. Ри́чард идёт на рабо́ту.
Ска́ффлз идёт на ку́хню. Там сыр!
Сли́нки идёт на окно́. Она́ смо́трит на у́лицу.
А вы? Куда́ вы идёте?
пойти́ – to set off (День 15) · войти́, вы́йти – to go in, to go out (День 18): идти́ with a prefix! 🧩
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Я иду́ в магази́н! – А я иду́ на рабо́ту. – Куда́ ты идёшь, Ри́чард? – На рабо́ту! Пока́! – Я идёт на ку́хню! – Нет, Ска́ффлз! Я иду́, ты идёшь. Ты идёшь на ку́хню. – Я иду́ на ку́хню… к сы́ру! – Мя́у.
I'm going to the shop! – And I'm going to work. – Where are you going, Richard? – To work! Bye! – I goes to the kitchen! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! I go – «иду́», you go – «идёшь». You are going to the kitchen. – I'm going to the kitchen… to the cheese! – Miaow.
- идти́ ➡️ – on foot, one way, now.
- я иду́, ты идёшь, он идёт, мы идём, вы идёте, они́ иду́т – the -ёшь family · Иди́! Иди́те!
- Куда́? – в / на + the «where to» form: в магази́н, в шко́лу, на рабо́ту, на ку́хню.
- Past (шёл, шла) – День 15.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English «I go to work» can mean today or every day. Russian has two verbs: «Я иду́ на рабо́ту» – now, I'm on my way ➡️. Every day, there and back – that is tomorrow's verb. 🔄 And «go» by car or bus is a third one (День 11)! 🚗
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- A new part, an old chunk. «Я иду́» was heard in Курс 1; the motion part begins with a sentence the student can already say – a win in the first minute.
- One verb at a time. Natasha's pair идти́ – ходи́ть is split: today only ➡️, tomorrow 🔄, then the ★ box. Each meaning gets its own day before they are compared (Tinkham 1993: words that are too alike, learned together, get mixed up).
- The body does the verb. Walking while saying «иду́» ties word and movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «Я идёт!». The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
