Your homework from Курс 3 · День 40: one long sentence. Say it aloud – spread your arms on «кры́лья»:
«Е́сли бы у меня́ бы́ли кры́лья, я бы…» – for example: «Е́сли бы у меня́ бы́ли кры́лья, я бы полете́л(а) высоко́-высоко́!»

- Tap a word and listen. Then do it: высоко́ – a hand up high ☝️ · далеко́ – a hand above your eyes, look far away 🫡 · гляжу́ – open your eyes wide 👀.
- Высоко́ сижу́ – далеко́ гляжу́ is Masha's line from the folk tale «Ма́ша и медве́дь» – Natasha's favourite line. Гляде́ть is an old word for смотре́ть – you meet it in tales and in poems. Курс 4 is the Russian of books.

Далеко́ – far: point far away with your whole arm 👉… and further! (далеко́ ↔ бли́зко – near).
Высоко́ comes from высо́кий (high, tall), далеко́ from далёкий (far). The -о words say how and where: высоко́, далеко́, хорошо́, бы́стро.

🌱 The seed of the day: сиде́ть → сижу́, гляде́ть → гляжу́ – д becomes ж in «я», as in Курс 3. And «Высоко́ сижу́ – далеко́ гляжу́» is the language of tales: short, with a rhyme. On День 5 you meet гля́дя – «looking», a word from books.

- Stand by a chair, hand up: Высоко́! Hand above your eyes: Я гляжу́ далеко́.
- Look out of the window: what do you see far away? Я ви́жу… Далеко́ – дом / де́рево / маши́на.
- Say the line of Ма́ша: «Высоко́ сижу́ – далеко́ гляжу́!» – then put it into «мы».
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.

Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
ВЫСОКО́ and ДАЛЕКО́ – the stress is at the end, on -КО́. Only that О sounds like a clear «о».
- высоко́ sounds «высако́»: the О just before the stress sounds like «а». The letter Ы never changes.
- далеко́ sounds «дилико́»: Е without stress sounds like a short «и», and the first А is short and weak.
- Clap on the loud syllable: вы-со-КО́ 👏 · да-ле-КО́ 👏. 30 seconds, every day. This is aerobics for the tongue.
Tomorrow morning, say to somebody at home: «Высоко́ сижу́ – далеко́ гляжу́!» – and then one thing you see: «Я ви́жу ко́шку. Ко́шка чита́ет?» 😄 – Can a cat read? On День 2 you meet the reading cat – «чита́ющий кот».
That is the first minute of День 2. You already know it – so День 2 starts with a win.
- High – far – near. Someone says the word – you do it: «Высоко́!» ☝️ · «Далеко́!» 🫡 · «Бли́зко!» – hands close together 🤏. Faster and faster.
- Ма́ша и медве́дь. One is the bear 🐻 – he walks and wants to sit down. The other is Ма́ша in the box: «Не сади́сь на пенёк, не ешь пирожо́к!» The bear jumps up: «Ой! Высоко́ сиди́т, далеко́ гляди́т!»
- Who sees what? Point and say: «Ска́ффлз гляди́т на ры́бок. Сли́нки гляди́т на Ска́ффлз. Я гляжу́ на вас!»
Remembering a word with the whole body works better than reading it again.
From above you see better. – People say it when the boss decides: «he sits higher, so he knows better». Often with a smile. 😉

Scuffles, where are you? – Scuffles is sitting on the wardrobe, high, high up. – I'm here! High I sit – far she looks! (Scuffles's mistake) – No, Scuffles! «I look» – гляжу́. Like «I sit»: сиде́ть – сижу́, гляде́ть – гляжу́. – High I sit – far I look! I can see the fish! – And I can see Scuffles. Is it clearer from above, Scuffles? – Slinky is sitting on the sofa and looking at Scuffles. Miaow! – And us? We also sit high and look far! This is Course 4!
- высоко́, далеко́ – how and where. They come from высо́кий, далёкий (adjectives): -ий → -о. Like хоро́ший → хорошо́.
- гляде́ть = смотре́ть, in tales and poems. гляжу́, гляди́шь, гляди́т… – the -ишь family (Курс 2). Only «я» is special: д → ж, like сиде́ть → сижу́.
- Высоко́ сижу́ – далеко́ гляжу́ (я) → Высоко́ сиди́м – далеко́ гляди́м (мы) – the name of Курс 4.
ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English has the same pair: look and the old, book word behold. Russian has смотре́ть (every day) and гляде́ть (tales, poems, a quick look). In Курс 4 you will learn which word fits which place – this is style (День 25). 😄
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- A win in the first minute. Course 4 starts with Course 3's homework – a long sentence the student can already say. Remembering yesterday's work without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- A story the student loves opens the course. The line from «Ма́ша и медве́дь» is short, has a rhyme and a picture – easy to remember and fun to say. Real texts start on day one.
- Old pattern, new word. сиде́ть → сижу́ is known from Курс 3; гляде́ть → гляжу́ follows the same change, so the new word costs almost nothing.
- The body does the word. A hand up on «высоко́», a hand above the eyes on «далеко́» ties the word to the movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «гляди́т» about herself – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
