День 2 из 40: Чита́ющий кот
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 2 – чита́ющий, спя́щий.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: чита́ть – они́ чита́ют → чита́ющий = кото́рый чита́ет
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 1: hand up ☝️, hand above your eyes 🫡:
«Высоко́ сижу́ – далеко́ гляжу́!» – and then: «Я ви́жу ко́шку. Ко́шка чита́ет?» 😄
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Can a cat read? Today – yes!
- Tap a word and listen. Then do it: point back 👈 at the person or the cat – and draw a long slow line with your hand 〰️: the one who is doing it now.
- чита́ющий кот = кот, кото́рый чита́ет – a reading cat. спя́щая ко́шка = ко́шка, кото́рая спит – a sleeping cat.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
One word, three endings – like ра́достный in Курс 3: чита́ющий кот · чита́ющая ко́шка · чита́ющие лю́ди.
👂 Listen first. Point back 👈 and draw the line 〰️ on every -ющий / -ящий word.
★ What is a participle (прича́стие)? 30 seconds.
- A participle is a word made from a verb that works like an adjective: чита́ющий = кото́рый чита́ет.
- Take они́: они́ чита́-ют → чита́-ющ-ий · они́ спя́-т → спя́-щ-ий · они́ сидя́-т → сидя́-щ-ий.
- -ут / -ют → -ущий / -ющий · -ат / -ят → -ащий / -ящий.
- Endings like ра́достный: -ий (он) · -ая (она́) · -ие (они́).
- You know one already – from Курс 3: «Доро́гу оси́лит иду́щий» (они́ иду́т → иду́щий).
🌱 The seed of the day: -ющий / -ящий = кото́рый + the verb now. You read it in books; at home you still say кото́рый. Tomorrow – the cat who ate the cheese.
Say every line aloud – point back 👈 and draw the line 〰️.
Ри́чард чита́ет. Он – чита́ющий челове́к. 📒
Сли́нки спит. Она́ – спя́щая ко́шка. 😴
Ска́ффлз чита́ет? Она́ – чита́ющая ко́шка! 😄
Чита́ющий кот – кот, кото́рый чита́ет.
- Look round your room. Who is doing what? «Ко́шка спит – спя́щая ко́шка.» · «Ма́ма чита́ет – чита́ющая ма́ма.»
- Say it both ways: «чита́ющий челове́к» = «челове́к, кото́рый чита́ет».
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Look at the ending: -ий, -ая or -ие? A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Щ in чита́ющий, спя́щий is a long, soft «шь» – hold it a little: «чита́ю-шь-шь-ий».
- Not «ш-ч» – one long soft sound. Smile a little and push the air out: щ-щ-щ.
- Clap on the loud syllable: чи-ТА́-ю-щий 👏 · СПЯ́-щий 👏. Only one syllable is loud.
- 30 seconds, every day. This is aerobics for the tongue.
Remember Курс 3? «Ска́ффлз съе́ла сыр!» 🧀 Tomorrow morning say it – and then the long way: «Ко́шка, кото́рая съе́ла сыр, сиди́т на дива́не.»
That is the first minute of День 3. You already know it – so День 3 starts with a win.
- Who is doing what? One person reads, sleeps, sits or walks without a word. The others point back 👈 and say: «Чита́ющая ма́ма!» · «Спя́щий па́па!» · «Сидя́щий кот!» · «Иду́щий челове́к!»
- -ий, -ая or -ие? Point at one man (-ий), one woman or cat (-ая), two people (-ие) – and say «чита́ющ…» with the right ending.
- Two ways. One says «чита́ющий кот» – the other says «кот, кото́рый чита́ет». Then swap.
Remembering a word with the whole body works better than reading it again.
A drowning man clutches at a straw.
«утопа́ющий» = кото́рый то́нет – a participle, like today's words! People say it when somebody in trouble tries even a small hope. 🤸 Gesture: wave your arms, then grab the air with one hand.
Read every line aloud, slowly. Find the participles – they end in -ющий, -ящий. ✋
🙌 Today's words: ЧИТА́ЮЩИЙ · СПЯ́ЩИЙ
Ри́чард – чита́ющий челове́к.
На дива́не – спя́щая ко́шка, Сли́нки.
На кни́ге – сидя́щая ко́шка, Ска́ффлз.
В аква́риуме – пла́вающие ры́бки. 🐠
А вы? Вы – чита́ющий челове́к? Да! Вы чита́ете!
спать – to sleep · спя́щий – sleeping · спа́льня – a bedroom · «Спя́щая краса́вица» – Sleeping Beauty 👸
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Richard is reading. Richard is a reading person. Slinky is sleeping on the sofa. She is a sleeping cat. Scuffles is sitting on Richard's book. – I'm reading too! I'm a reading tomcat! (Scuffles's mistake: she is a she-cat) – No, Scuffles! You are a she-cat. You are a reading cat – чита́ющая ко́шка! – I'm a reading cat! And Slinky is a sleeping cat. – And I'm not a reading person any more. Scuffles is sitting on the book! – In books they write «the reading cat». At home people say «the cat who is reading».
- ★ прича́стие – a participle = an adjective made from a verb.
- -ющий / -ущий (они́ чита́ют, иду́т) · -ящий / -ащий (они́ спят, сидя́т).
- чита́ющий кот = кот, кото́рый чита́ет. Books: чита́ющий. Speech: кото́рый.
- Endings: чита́ющий · чита́ющая · чита́ющие
- The stress stays where it is in «они́»: чита́ют → чита́ющий, спят → спя́щий.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English has it too: the reading cat, a sleeping cat – the -ing word in front of the noun. Russian чита́ющий is that -ing word. But English -ing has a second job («Reading, I listen») – Russian has another word for that: чита́я (День 5). 😉
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Learn to recognise, not to produce. Participles and gerunds are mostly written Russian. A reader needs to recognise them fast; speaking can still use кото́рый. Receptive knowledge comes first and grows fastest with a lot of easy reading (Nation 2013, Learning Vocabulary in Another Language).
- Old pattern, new word. Every new form is built from a form the student already knows (они́ чита́ют, он съел), so the new step is small.
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
