День 11 из 40: Гу́си-ле́беди
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – ле́бедь, ре́чка, я́блоня.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: «Съешь моего́ пирожка́ – скажу́!» – eat some of my pie
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 10: flap your arms like big white birds:
«Гу́си-ле́беди!» 🪿 – and the Курс 1 line: «Пе́чка, пе́чка, скажи́ мне: где бра́тец?»
You remembered it – that is your first win today. In Курс 1 you read a short telling. Today – the real tale.
- Tap and listen. Then do it: break a piece off with your fingers 🤏 – some of the pie, not all.
- пирожка́ (genitive) = a piece of the pie · пирожо́к = the whole pie. «Съешь моего́ пирожка́» – please, taste a bit of mine.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
ле́бедь – a swan: arms out, slow and proud 🦢 · я́блоня – an apple tree: arms up like branches 🌳 · пе́чка – a stove: warm your hands 🔥 · ре́чка – a little river: wave your hand like water 🌊
👂 Listen first. Break off a little piece 🤏 on every «some» word.
- Пе́чка (in the tale): Съешь моего́ ржано́го пирожка́ – скажу́! 🥧
- Де́вочка: У моего́ ба́тюшки и пшени́чные не едя́тся! 😤 – Пе́чка молчи́т.
- Ната́ша (at home, a biscuit in her hand): Съешь моего́ пече́нья, Ска́ффлз! 🍪
Ска́ффлз: Съешь моё пече́нье! Всё!
- Ната́ша: Не всё, Ска́ффлз! «Пече́нья» – немно́го, кусо́чек. 🤏 «Пече́нье» – всё.
Ска́ффлз: Ой… Тогда́ мне – всё пече́нье! 😼
- Ри́чард смеётся. 📒 –
Сли́нки смо́трит на ры́бок. Ей пече́нья не на́до.
🤏 Some or all? – the genitive of «some»
Съешь пирожо́к – eat the (whole) pie · Съешь пирожка́ – eat some pie
Дай хле́ба – give me some bread (Курс 2) · Нале́й ча́ю – pour me some tea · Вы́пей молока́ – drink some milk
In the tale: «Съешь моего́ пирожка́, моего́ лесно́го я́блочка, моего́ киселька́» – the helpers only want her to taste.
And the lesson of the tale: the first time she was proud – nobody helped. The second time she ate and said «Спаси́бо!» – and everybody hid her. 🙏
🌱 The seed of the day: -а / -я = some (genitive). And again: in a tale, the kind and polite one is helped.
Say every line aloud – break off a piece 🤏 on «some».
Пе́чка, пе́чка, скажи́, куда́ гу́си-ле́беди полете́ли? 🪿
Съешь моего́ ржано́го пирожка́ – скажу́! 🥧
Я́блоня, ма́тушка, спрячь меня́! 🌳
Спаси́бо! 🙏
- Offer somebody at home a bit of your food, the tale way: «Съешь моего́ пече́нья!» · «Вы́пей моего́ ча́ю!» 🍪☕
- And answer the kind way: «Спаси́бо!» – not the proud way. 😄
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Some or all? A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
ПИРОЖКА́ sounds «пирашка́».
- Ж before К, П, Т sounds Ш: пирожка́ «пирашка́», ло́жка «ло́шка», но́жка «но́шка» (День 10).
- At the end too: ёж «ёш», нож «нош».
- Clap on the loud syllable: пи-рож-КА́ 👏 · ГУ́-си ЛЕ́-бе-ди 👏👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning squat down like a frog, jump once and say: «Я – лягу́шка. Ква-ква!» 🐸
That is the first minute of День 12. You already know it – so День 12 starts with a win.
- Proud or kind? One is the stove (or the tree, the river): «Съешь моего́ пирожка́!» The other answers – first the proud way, nose up 😤: «У моего́ ба́тюшки…!» – then the kind way, a little bow 🙏: «Спаси́бо!»
- The way back. The geese chase you 🪿 – run on the spot and call to each helper: «Ре́чка, ма́тушка, спрячь меня́!» · «Я́блоня, ма́тушка, спрячь меня́!» · «Пе́чка, ма́тушка, спрячь меня́!» – and crouch down to hide.
- Some, please. Point at things on the table – the others ask for some: «Дай хле́ба!» · «Нале́й ча́ю!» · «Дай сы́ру!» 🧀
You read the short telling in Курс 1. Now open the box «Полный текст» at the bottom of that page: the whole tale twice – as A. N. Tolstoy told it and as A. N. Afanasyev wrote it down. 🪿🦢 The bar at its top brings you back here.
Don't spit in the well – you may need to drink from it.
Don't be rude to people – one day you may need their help. Like the girl and the stove! «воды́» – some water: today's genitive of «some». 🤸 Gesture: shake your head «не плюй!», then drink from your hands.
Read every line aloud, slowly. Real lines from A. N. Tolstoy's telling. ✋
🙌 Today's words:
я́блоко – an apple · я́блоня – an apple tree · я́блочко – a little apple · я́блочный – apple (apple juice)
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
The stove: Eat some of my rye pie – and I'll tell you! – The girl: At my father's we don't even eat white pies! The stove says nothing. – Have some of my biscuit, Scuffles! – Eat my biscuit! All of it! (Scuffles's mistake) – Not all of it, Scuffles! «Пече́нья» means a little, a piece. «Пече́нье» means all of it. – Oh… Then for me – all the biscuit! Richard laughs. Slinky is looking at the fish. She doesn't want any biscuit.
- Some = genitive: съешь пирожка́, дай хле́ба, нале́й ча́ю, вы́пей молока́.
- All = accusative: съешь пирожо́к, дай хлеб.
- Tale words of address: пе́чка, ма́тушка · я́блоня, ма́тушка – helpers are «mother».
- Proud ✗ – kind and polite ✔ = help. 🙏
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
Russian tea is often «ча́ю», not «ча́я»: «Нале́йте ча́ю!» – an old «some» ending -у / -ю that lives on with tea, sugar and cheese: ча́ю, са́хару, сы́ру. Scuffles likes the last one. 🧀
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- A whole real text. A tale the student already knows the shape of is input they can understand and enjoy, even with unknown words (Krashen 1985, comprehensible input). The word list is folded – the student opens it only when stuck.
- Read for the story. Readers who guess from the story and skip a few words read more and learn more words on the way (Nation 2013).
- Repetition inside the tale. Tales repeat the same line three times with one thing changed – spaced retrieval inside a story (Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025); a line with a rhythm is remembered whole (Wray 2002, formulaic language).
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
