День 10 из 40: Ба́ба-яга́

🎬 The videos for Course 4 come after the videos for Courses 1–3. Until then every day works with the text, the pictures and the sound. Start now – the lesson is the same.

Ба́ба-яга́
Baba Yaga – the witch of Russian tales
⏱ 15 (+ 25 if you want more) min · 🎒 You need: a broom 🧹 – and something kind to give

📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – Ба́ба-яга́, избу́шка, костяна́я нога́.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: «Избу́шка, избу́шка, стань ко мне пе́редом, а к ле́су за́дом!»
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days

Часть 1 · Обяза́тельно · 15 мину́тPart 1 – everybody does this. 15 minutes.
🤸 Разми́нка · Warm-up (1 min)

Your homework from День 9: stamp one stiff leg on the floor, a creaky witch's voice:
«Ба́ба-яга́ – костяна́я нога́!» 🦴🧹
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today you meet her – and her cat. 🐈‍⬛

👀👂 Смотри́те и слу́шайте · Watch and listen
🔊 БА́БА-ЯГА́ – КОСТЯНА́Я НОГА́ 🧹
  • Tap and listen. Then do it: a creaky voice, one stiff leg 🦴, a broom in your hand 🧹.
  • Ба́ба-яга́ lives in the forest in избу́шка на ку́рьих но́жках – a little hut on hen's legs. 🐔🏠 It turns round when you say the magic words.
👋 Скажи́те и покажи́те · Say it and show it

Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.

ИЗБА́ – словарь
hands make a roof over your head
КУ́РИЦА – словарь
hands on your hips, flap like wings
НОГА́ – словарь
stamp one stiff leg
ВОРО́ТА – словарь
open two gates with both arms, «скрип!»

избу́шка = a little изба́ (-ушк-, Курс 3) · на ку́рьих но́жках – on hen's legs (ку́рица → ку́рий, нога́ → но́жка) · костяна́я – made of bone (кость → костяно́й).

🐈 Ко́шки и се́мя дня · The cats and the seed of the day

👂 Listen first. Turn round on the spot on the magic words.

  • Ната́ша: В ска́зке у Ба́бы-яги́ есть кот. Де́вочка дала́ коту́ ветчины́ – и кот ей помо́г! 🐈‍⬛
  • Ска́ффлз (in a little scarf): Я – кот Ба́бы-яги́!

🧚 Tale pairs – words that always go together
Tales use the same pairs again and again – learn them as one word:
Ба́ба-яга́ костяна́я нога́ · избу́шка на ку́рьих но́жках · дрему́чий лес (a deep dark forest) · широ́кая-широ́кая река́ · кра́сна де́вица and до́брый мо́лодец (День 15)
A two-part name changes both halves: Ба́ба-яга́ → у Ба́бы-яги́ → к Ба́бе-яге́ · Царе́вна-лягу́шка → у Царе́вны-лягу́шки.

🌱 The seed of the day: tales are made of ready pairs. And in every tale the kind one gets help – from a cat, a dog, a gate, a tree. 🐈‍⬛🌳

🔁 Повторя́йте · Repeat

Say every line aloud – the creaky voice, the stiff leg, the turn.

Ба́ба-яга́ – костяна́я нога́! 🦴
Избу́шка на ку́рьих но́жках. 🐔🏠
Избу́шка, избу́шка, стань ко мне пе́редом, а к ле́су за́дом! 🔄
Я живу́ у Ба́бы-яги́. 🧹

🗣️ Ва́ша о́чередь! · Your turn!
  • Stand with your back to the room and say the magic words: «Избу́шка, избу́шка, стань ко мне пе́редом!» – somebody turns round. 😄
  • Who helped the girl? Say it: «Кот помо́г. Соба́ки помогли́. Воро́та помогли́. Берёзка помогла́.»
  • Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.

Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.

✔ Прове́рьте себя́ · Check yourself

Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊

1 🐔 Ба́ба-яга́ lives in a hut on …

ку́рьих но́жках
ко́шкиных ла́пках
костяно́й ноге́

2 😾 Scuffles: «Я живу́ у Ба́ба-яга́!» How is it right?

…у Ба́бы-яги́!
…у Ба́ба-яги́!
…у Ба́бы-яга́!

3 Why did the cat help the girl?

She gave him ham. 🍖
She gave him a fish.
Ба́ба-яга́ told him to.

4 🧺 The girl throws the towel. What does it become?

a wide river
a thick forest
a little hut

5 «Избу́шка, избу́шка, стань ко мне пе́редом, а к ле́су …»

за́дом
пе́редом
ного́й

Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.

🔊 Звук дня · Sound of the day: Ь before a vowel

КУ́РЬИХ – the soft sign before И gives a little Й: «ку́р-йих».

  • The same in words you know: семья́ «сем-йа́», пла́тье «пла́т-йе», воробьи́ «вараб-йи́».
  • Ба́ба-яга́ – only the stressed vowels are clear; the Я before the stress sounds «йи»: «Ба́ба-йига́».
  • Clap on the loud syllable: КУ́-рьих 👏 · НО́Ж-ках 👏 · Ба-ба-я-ГА́ 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
🏠 Дома́шняя рабо́та · Homework – one small thing

Tomorrow morning flap your arms like big white birds and say: «Гу́си-ле́беди!» 🪿 – and the Курс 1 line: «Пе́чка, пе́чка, скажи́ мне: где бра́тец?»
That is the first minute of День 11. You already know it – so День 11 starts with a win.

✔ Часть 1 гото́ва! Part 1 done.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 11 · Гу́си-ле́беди ▶
Часть 2 · Е́сли хоти́те · +25 мину́тPart 2 – only if you want more. Nothing here is needed for tomorrow.
🤸 Жестова́я игра́ · Gesture game
  1. Избу́шка, повернись! One person is the hut – back to the others. The others must say the magic words exactly: «Избу́шка, избу́шка, стань ко мне пе́редом, а к ле́су за́дом!» A mistake – the hut stays still! 😄
  2. Who helps? Act the four helpers: the birch 🌳 (arms up, a ribbon), the gate 🚪 («скрип!»), the dogs 🐕 («гав!»), the cat 🐈‍⬛ («мя́у!»). The others say what the girl gave: «Ле́нточку! Ма́слица! Хле́бца! Ветчи́нки!»
  3. The chase. Ба́ба-яга́ «flies» in her mortar (a bucket and a broom 🧹). The girl throws a towel – everybody makes a river with their arms 🌊; then a comb – everybody is a forest 🌲.
📖 Ска́зка це́ликом · the whole tale

The whole tale, as A. N. Afanasyev wrote it down (1860s). The girl, her kind aunt, the cat who gets ham – and the river and the forest that grow from a towel and a comb. 🌊🌲 The bar at its top brings you back here.

📚 Words of the tale – tap to open. You don't need every word. 👇

🦉 Посло́вица дня · proverb of the day · 👂 listen and read
Как ау́кнется, так и откли́кнется.

As you call into the forest, so it echoes back.
What you give comes back to you – like the girl's bread, oil, ribbon and ham. «Ау́!» is what Russians shout in the forest to find each other. 🤸 Gesture: hands round your mouth «Ау́!», then a hand behind your ear.

📖 Чита́йте са́ми · Read alone – guess, then tap

Read every line aloud, slowly. Real lines from the tale. ✋

🙌 Today's words:

ба́ба – an old woman (in tales) · ба́бушка – a granny · ба́бочка – a butterfly! 🦋
изба́ – a wooden house · избу́шка – a little one (-ушк-) · нога́ → но́жка (г → ж) – a little leg

Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊

📖 Текст уро́ка · The text – open it only after you can say it without reading

In the tale Baba Yaga has a cat. The girl gave the cat some ham – and the cat helped her! – I'm Baba Yaga's cat! I live «у Ба́ба-яга́»! (Scuffles's mistake) – «У Ба́бы-яги́», Scuffles! The word has two halves – and both change. – I live at Baba Yaga's. Give me some ham – and I'll help you! – Can I give you fish instead? – You can! – Little hut, little hut, turn your front to me and your back to the forest! Slinky turned round too – back to us. Miaow!

💡 Пра́вило · Rule
  • Tale pairs: Ба́ба-яга́ костяна́я нога́ · избу́шка на ку́рьих но́жках · дрему́чий лес.
  • Two-part names change both halves: у Ба́бы-яги́, к Ба́бе-яге́.
  • «Дай мне ветчины́, хле́бца» – genitive = some (a piece of).
  • стань пе́редом / за́дом – turn your front / your back.
ударе́ние – словарь ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).

ЛО́НДОН – словарь ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – словарь ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.

The sign is only a help for learners. Russian books don't print it, and you don't write it.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
😄 Для тех, кто говори́т по-англи́йски · For English speakers

Ба́ба-яга́ is not always bad – sometimes she helps the hero, sometimes she wants to eat him. And Tchaikovsky wrote a little piano piece about her: «Ба́ба-яга́» from his «Album for the Young» (1878). 🎹

🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way

  • Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
  • A whole real text. A tale the student already knows the shape of is input they can understand and enjoy, even with unknown words (Krashen 1985, comprehensible input). The word list is folded – the student opens it only when stuck.
  • Read for the story. Readers who guess from the story and skip a few words read more and learn more words on the way (Nation 2013).
  • Ready pairs. Tale pairs are learned as one chunk and come back in every tale – easy to remember, easy to recognise (Wray 2002, formulaic language).
  • The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
  • The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
