День 15 из 40: Жи́ли-бы́ли…
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – тридевя́тое ца́рство, до́брый мо́лодец, кра́сна де́вица.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: жить – жил-был (он) · жила́-была́ (она́) · жи́ли-бы́ли (они́)
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 14: open your hands like a book, a storyteller's voice:
«Жи́ли-бы́ли дед и ба́ба…» 📖
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today you learn to tell a tale – the beginning, the middle and the end.
- Tap and listen. Then do it: open your hands like an old book 📖 and lean forward – a story is coming.
- жи́ли-бы́ли = they lived, they were – «once upon a time». It changes like the past: жил-был царь · жила́-была́ ко́шка · жи́ли-бы́ли дед и ба́ба.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
тридевя́тое ца́рство – the far, far kingdom: point very far away 👉👉👉 · кра́сна де́вица – a beautiful maiden: a little bow 🙇♀️ · до́брый мо́лодец – a fine young man: chest out 💪
👂 Listen first. Open the book 📖 on every beginning, close it 👏 on every end.
★ How a Russian tale begins and ends – 30 seconds.
| 📖 the beginning | 🏁 the end |
|---|---|
- тридевя́тое = три́жды де́вять = 27 – very, very far away. тридеся́тое = 30. 🗺️
- In the middle: «Ско́ро ска́зка ска́зывается, да не ско́ро де́ло де́лается» (День 13).
- The heroes: до́брый мо́лодец and кра́сна де́вица (an old short form: кра́сна = краси́вая).
🌱 The seed of the day: with these lines you can tell a tale, not only read one. Tomorrow – all the tales together.
Say every line aloud – a storyteller's voice.
Жи́ли-бы́ли дед и ба́ба. 📖
В тридевя́том ца́рстве, в тридеся́том госуда́рстве жил-был царь. 👑
Жила́-была́ кра́сна де́вица. 🙇♀️
Ста́ли они́ жить-пожива́ть да добра́ нажива́ть. 🏠
Вот и ска́зке коне́ц, а кто слу́шал – молоде́ц! 👏
- Tell a tale about your own cat, dog or teddy – just four lines: «Жила́-была́… Жила́ она́ в… И вот… Вот и ска́зке коне́ц!» 🐈
- Use the right form: жил-был (он) · жила́-была́ (она́) · жи́ли-бы́ли (они́).
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
ЖИ́ЛИ sounds «жы́ли»: Ж is always hard, so И after it sounds «ы».
- жил «жыл» · жить «жыть» · Ши too: ши́шка «шы́шка», маши́на «машы́на».
- бы́ли – the Ы is the same sound. So: «жы́ли-бы́ли» – two twins! 👯
- Clap on the loud syllable: ЖИ́-ли-БЫ́-ли 👏👏 · мо-ло-ДЕ́Ц 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow is a review day. Say the first line of your favourite tale from this week – and its last line: «Жи́ли-бы́ли… Вот и ска́зке коне́ц!» 📖👏
That is the first minute of День 16. You already know it – so День 16 starts with a win.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 16 · В тридевя́том ца́рстве ▶
- The tale chain. Sit in a circle. The first says «Жи́ли-бы́ли…» and one line. Each person adds one line. The last one closes the book: «Вот и ска́зке коне́ц!» 👏
- Он, она́, они́. Point at one man – «жил-был!» · one woman or cat – «жила́-была́!» · two people – «жи́ли-бы́ли!»
- How far? Point 👉 near: «ря́дом!» · further 👉👉: «далеко́!» (День 1) · as far as you can 👉👉👉: «в тридевя́том ца́рстве!»
That's the end of the tale – and whoever listened is a fine fellow!
The storyteller's last words – Russian grannies say it to children at bedtime. And you listened to six tales this week: молоде́ц! 🤸 Gesture: close the book with a clap, then a thumbs up 👍.
Read every line aloud, slowly. The first and the last lines of this week's tales. ✋
жить – to live · жить-пожива́ть – to live on and on · жильё – a home · жи́тель – an inhabitant (-тель, Курс 3)
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Now I'm telling the tale! Once upon a time «жил-была́» me… (Scuffles's mistake) – «Жила́-была́», Scuffles! You are a she: жила́-была́. He – жил-был. They – жи́ли-бы́ли. – Once upon a time there lived a cat called Scuffles. She lived in the thrice-ninth fridge, in the thrice-tenth kitchen… And a fine young man, Richard, came to her – with cheese! – And I was there, I ate cheese, it ran down my moustache… and Scuffles ate it all! – That's the end of the tale, and whoever listened is a fine fellow! Miaow!
- ★ Beginnings: Жи́ли-бы́ли… · В не́котором ца́рстве… · В тридевя́том ца́рстве…
- Endings: Ста́ли жить-пожива́ть… · И я там был… · Вот и ска́зке коне́ц…
- жил-был · жила́-была́ · жи́ли-бы́ли
- тридевя́тый = 3 × 9 = 27 – very far.
- Tale heroes: до́брый мо́лодец, кра́сна де́вица.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English tales begin «Once upon a time» and end «…and they lived happily ever after». Russian has both – «Жи́ли-бы́ли» and «Ста́ли жить-пожива́ть да добра́ нажива́ть» – and one more: the storyteller was at the wedding feast, but the honey only ran down his moustache. 🍯😄
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Ready frames for telling. Fixed beginnings and endings let a learner tell a whole story with few words – the frame carries the structure (Wray 2002, formulaic language).
- Repetition inside the tale. Tales repeat the same line three times with one thing changed – spaced retrieval inside a story (Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025); a line with a rhythm is remembered whole (Wray 2002, formulaic language).
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
