Sit comfortably! Your homework from День 15: the first and the last line of your favourite tale:
«Жи́ли-бы́ли… Вот и ска́зке коне́ц!» 📖👏
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Today is a review day – Повтори́м! 🔁
- Don't read anything yet. Listen: which tales has Scuffles put into her tale? Count them on your fingers. 🖐️
- Show the gesture of every tale: shiver ❄️ · stiff leg 🦴 · flap 🪿 · frog 🐸 · bony face 💀 · hen 🐔.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. 🔁 Old friends – the words of День 9–15:
The gestures of the tales: ❄️ Моро́зко · 🦴 Ба́ба-яга́ · 🪿 Гу́си-ле́беди · 🐸 Царе́вна-лягу́шка · 💀 Коще́й · 🐔 Ку́рица · 📖 Жи́ли-бы́ли.
👂 Listen first – then read it. Show the gesture of every tale Scuffles puts in.
★ Повтори́м – six tales, six lessons. 30 seconds. You know them all:
| 📖 tale | 🗣️ the line | 💡 Russian |
|---|---|---|
| ❄️ Моро́зко (9) | Тепло́ ли тебе́, де́вица? | ли – a book question |
| 🦴 Ба́ба-яга́ (10) | Избу́шка, стань ко мне пе́редом! | tale pairs · у Ба́бы-яги́ |
| 🪿 Гу́си-ле́беди (11) | Съешь моего́ пирожка́! | genitive = some |
| 🐸 Царе́вна-лягу́шка (12) | Игла́ в яйце́, яйцо́ в у́тке… | где? – в … -е |
| 💀 Ма́рья Море́вна (13) | В чула́н не загля́дывай! | a long text in parts |
| 🐔 Ку́рица (14) | Ку́рица несла́ золоты́е я́йца. | нести́ я́йца · a fable |
📖 Жи́ли-бы́ли… – Вот и ска́зке коне́ц! (15) · and in every tale: the kind one is helped. 🙏
Say the review aloud – the gesture of each tale.
Тепло́ ли тебе́, де́вица? – Тепло́! ❄️
Избу́шка, избу́шка, стань ко мне пе́редом! 🦴
Съешь моего́ пирожка́! – Спаси́бо! 🪿
Игла́ в яйце́, яйцо́ в у́тке. 🐸
В тридевя́том ца́рстве жила́-была́ ко́шка… 📖
👀 and the motto of the review days: Повторе́ние – мать уче́ния! 🔁
- Make your own mixed-up tale like Scuffles – one line from each tale: «Жил-был… Моро́зко спра́шивает… Ба́ба-яга́ говори́т… Вот и ска́зке коне́ц!»
- Which tale did you like most? «Мне понра́вилась ска́зка "…"»
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you do it without the video? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Say them one after the other – one sound from each day:
- З = С at the end (9): моро́з «маро́с» · Ь + vowel (10): ку́рьих «ку́р-йих» · Ж = Ш before К (11): пирожка́ «пирашка́»
- Ц is hard (12): царе́вна «цыре́вна» · СС (13): бессме́ртный · О after the stress (14): зо́лото «зо́лъта» · Ж is hard (15): жи́ли «жы́ли»
- Clap on the loud syllable: в три-де-ВЯ́-том ЦА́Р-стве 👏👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow a new part begins: Pushkin and the poets. Wave your arms like a winter storm 🌨️ and say Pushkin's first line: «Бу́ря мгло́ю не́бо кро́ет…» – and tell the riddle (in Part 2) to someone at home.
That is the first minute of День 17. You already know it – so День 17 starts with a win.
The second part of Курс 4 is done – whole folk tales. 🎉 You read six real tales! See you tomorrow: День 17 · Зи́мний ве́чер ▶
Ёлка! – the fir tree. It is green in winter and in summer.
Remember the fir tree in «Моро́зко» (День 9)? The girl sat under a big ель – and Моро́зко jumped from ёлка to ёлка. And at New Year every Russian home has a ёлка – and Дед Моро́з comes. 🎅
«Угада́й ска́зку!» – guess the tale – a game for the whole family.
- One shows only the gesture of a tale (shiver ❄️, stiff leg 🦴, flap 🪿, frog 🐸, bony face 💀, hen 🐔). The others guess: «Моро́зко!» · «Ба́ба-яга́!» …
- One line. One says a line from a tale – the others say which tale: «Тепло́ ли тебе́, де́вица?» – «Моро́зко!»
- The tale chain. Everybody adds a line to one big mixed-up tale – like Scuffles. The last one: «Вот и ска́зке коне́ц!» 👏
It is not always Pancake Week for the cat.
Good times don't last for ever. Ма́сленица is the old Russian pancake week before Lent – a happy, full time for everybody, even the cat. 🥞🐈 And for Scuffles: the cheese is not every day! 🤸 Gesture: rub your tummy happily, then wag your finger «not always».
Read every word aloud, then tap it to check. Count the words you read! ✋
Now whole sentences:
царь – a tsar · ца́рство – a kingdom · тридевя́тое ца́рство – the far, far kingdom · госуда́рство – a state
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Once upon a time a cat called Scuffles lived «в тридевя́тое ца́рство»… (Scuffles's mistake) – Where? «В тридевя́том ца́рстве» – in the thrice-ninth kingdom! – …in the thrice-ninth kingdom. She went into the forest. Morozko asks: «Are you warm, cat?» – «Warm, dear Frost!» She came to the hut on hen's legs: «Little hut, little hut, turn your front to me!» And there was Baba Yaga: «Have some of my pie!» – «Thank you!» Further on – a bog, and in the bog – a frog with an arrow. And in the closet – Koschei the Deathless… and a hen with golden eggs! – And the moral? – Don't be greedy – give the cat some cheese! – That's the end of the tale, and whoever listened is a fine fellow! Slinky is asleep under the blanket.
- ★ Повтори́м – День 9–15:
- ли – a book question (9) · tale pairs, у Ба́бы-яги́ (10)
- genitive = some: пирожка́, ча́ю (11) · где? – в … -е, на дубу́ (12)
- a long text: part by part (13) · нести́ я́йца, a fable (14)
- Жи́ли-бы́ли… – Вот и ска́зке коне́ц! (15)
- жил-был · жила́-была́ · жи́ли-бы́ли
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
In one week you read six real Russian tales – the same tales Russian grandmothers have told for hundreds of years. English children know Cinderella and Snow White; Russian children know Моро́зко and Ба́ба-яга́. Now you do too. 💪
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- A review day with no new words. Words met again after a gap of a few days are remembered much better than words met many times in one go – Rogers · Nakata · Chiu 2025.
- All six tales side by side. One table with one line and one rule from each tale helps the student see the whole week (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
- Remember first, then check. Reading a week's words alone, then tapping to check, is retrieval practice – Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- A riddle at the end. A riddle makes the student guess before the answer – guessing first, even wrongly, helps the answer stay (Kornell, Hays · Bjork 2009, the pretesting effect).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says «в тридевя́тое ца́рство» for «where?». The student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
