День 17 из 40: Зи́мний ве́чер
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – бу́ря, мгла, вью́га.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: «Бу́ря мгло́ю не́бо кро́ет» – крыть = to cover
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 16: wave your arms like a winter storm 🌨️:
«Бу́ря мгло́ю не́бо кро́ет…» – and the riddle: «Зимо́й и ле́том одни́м цве́том.» – «Ёлка!» 🎄
You remembered it – that is your first win today. You have just said the first line of Pushkin's most famous winter poem. 🎉
- Tap and listen. Then do it: wave both arms above your head like a storm 🌨️ – and clap the rhythm: ДА-да ДА-да ДА-да ДА-да.
- мгла – dark mist, snowy darkness · мгло́ю = мглой (with mist) – the old poem form · кро́ет – covers. «The storm covers the sky with darkness.»
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
бу́ря – a storm: wave both arms 🌨️ · вью́га – a snowstorm: turn round, the hands spin 🌀 · мгла – dark mist: hands slowly cover your eyes 🌫️
👂 Listen first. Clap the rhythm on your knee: ДА-да ДА-да.
Ви́хри сне́жные крутя́;
То, как зверь, она́ заво́ет,
Ска́ффлз (on the windowsill): Буря́ мгло́ю не́бо кро́ет!
- Ната́ша: Не «буря́» – бу́ря! Слу́шай: ДА-да ДА-да. Бу́-ря мгло́-ю не́-бо кро́-ет. 👏
Ска́ффлз (her tail taps the rhythm): Бу́-ря мгло́-ю не́-бо кро́-ет! 🐈
- Ри́чард (with two mugs): Где же кру́жка? ☕ – Ната́ша: Вот она́! 😄
Сли́нки спит у батаре́и. За окно́м – бу́ря. 🌨️
🎵 The music of a poem – rhythm
A Russian poem has a beat, like music. «Зи́мний ве́чер» goes ДА-да ДА-да – a strong beat, a weak beat:
Бу́-ря мгло́-ю не́-бо кро́-ет · Ви́-хри сне́-жны-е кру-тя́
So in a poem the stress is never a guess – the beat tells you where it is. 🥁
мгло́ю = мглой – poems love the long form -ою / -ею: водо́ю (День 13), зимо́ю, землёю.
🌱 The seed of the day: a poem is music – clap it before you read it. And Pushkin is not hard: «бу́ря, не́бо, зверь, дитя́» – you know almost every word.
Clap the beat on your knee and say the verse aloud. 🥁
Бу́ря мгло́ю не́бо кро́ет, 🌨️
Ви́хри сне́жные крутя́; 🌀
То, как зверь, она́ заво́ет, 🐺
То запла́чет, как дитя́. 😢
- Look out of the window: what is the weather? Say it like a poet: «Бу́ря мгло́ю не́бо кро́ет» – or the home way: «На у́лице ве́тер и снег.»
- Learn the four lines by heart – every Russian knows them. 🇷🇺
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. Clap first – the beat helps. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Бу́ря мгло́ю не́бо кро́ет – four beats, ДА-da ДА-da ДА-da ДА-da (poets call it хоре́й).
- The weak syllables are short and quiet: «Бу́-ря», not «Бу-ря́». The stressed ones are long.
- МГЛ – three consonants together at the start: m-g-l. Say them quickly, one after the other: «мгло́ю».
- Clap: ВИ́-хри СНЕ́-жны-е кру-ТЯ́ 👏👏👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning put your hand on your heart and say the first line of the most famous love poem in Russian: «Я по́мню чу́дное мгнове́нье…» ❤️
That is the first minute of День 18. You already know it – so День 18 starts with a win.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 18 · Я по́мню чу́дное мгнове́нье ▶
- The storm. One reads the four lines – the others are the storm: arms wave 🌨️, a growl on «зверь» 🐺, a cry on «дитя́» 😢.
- Clap the beat. One says a line in the beat – ДА-да ДА-да – the others clap. Then try your name: «Ри́-чард» (ДА-да) · «На-та́-ша» (да-ДА-да) – does it fit the poem?
- Poem or home? One says a line the poem way – the other says it the home way: «Бу́ря мгло́ю не́бо кро́ет» – «Бу́ря закрыва́ет не́бо».
The whole poem – four verses. Pushkin and his old nanny in a little wooden house, the storm outside: «Вы́пьем, до́брая подру́жка…» The bar at its top brings you back here.
Pushkin is our everything.
Not a folk proverb but «крыла́тые слова́» – the critic Аполло́н Григо́рьев wrote it in 1859, and every Russian says it today. For Russians, Pushkin is the start of everything: the language, the poems, the tales. 🤸 Gesture: open your arms wide «всё!»
Read the last verse aloud, slowly – clap the beat. Pushkin's own words. ✋
🙌 Today's words: БУ́РЯ · МГЛА · ВЬЮ́ГА
Вы́пьем, до́брая подру́жка
Бе́дной ю́ности мое́й,
Вы́пьем с го́ря; где же кру́жка?
Се́рдцу бу́дет веселе́й.
крыть – to cover · кры́ша – a roof · закры́ть – to close (День 4!) · откры́ть – to open
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
The storm covers the sky with darkness, spinning snowy whirlwinds; now like a wild beast it howls, now it cries like a child… (Pushkin) – «Буря́» covers the sky! (Scuffles's mistake: the stress) – Not «буря́» – «бу́ря»! Listen: DA-da DA-da. – Бу́-ря мгло́-ю не́-бо кро́-ет! – Where is the mug? – Here it is! Slinky is asleep by the radiator. Outside there is a storm.
- A poem has a beat: «Зи́мний ве́чер» = ДА-да ДА-да (хоре́й). The beat shows the stress.
- Poems love -ою / -ею: мгло́ю = мглой, водо́ю = водо́й.
- то… то… = now… now…: «то заво́ет, то запла́чет».
- Clap first – read second. 🥁
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
The «old woman» in the poem is Pushkin's nanny, Ари́на Родио́новна. She told him the folk tales of Part 2 when he was a boy – and later he wrote his own tales in verse. Russians love her almost as much as him. 👵📖
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Poems are made to be said aloud. Rhythm and rhyme make a line easy to remember whole – the oldest memory tool there is (Rubin 1995, Memory in Oral Traditions).
- Real literature early. Short famous poems give the student the joy of reading the real thing, which keeps them going (Dörnyei 2001, motivational strategies).
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
