День 19 из 40: Я вас люби́л
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – и́скренно, не́жно, безнаде́жно.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: люби́ть – «Я вас люби́л» – why «вас», not «тебя́»?
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 18: quietly and politely, a little bow:
«Я вас люби́л…» 🙇
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Did you find an answer – why «вас»? Today we see. 🤔
- Tap and listen. Then do it: a polite open hand forward on «вас» 🙇 – a little distance – then both hands on your heart on «люби́л» ❤️.
- Я вас люби́л – I loved you. Past – it is over. And вас – polite, distant: he does not want to trouble her any more.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
и́скренно – sincerely: a hand on your heart, look straight 👀 · не́жно – tenderly: stroke the air softly 🤲 · безнаде́жно – without hope: без + наде́жда, the hands drop 😔 · безмо́лвно – silently: a finger on your lips 🤫
👂 Listen first. A polite hand on every «вас», a hand on your heart on «люби́л».
В душе́ мое́й уга́сла не совсе́м;
Но пусть она́ вас бо́льше не трево́жит;
Я не хочу́ печа́лить вас ниче́м.
Я вас люби́л безмо́лвно, безнаде́жно,
То ро́бостью, то ре́вностью томи́м;
Я вас люби́л так и́скренно, так не́жно,
Ска́ффлз (next to Richard, very grandly): Ри́чард, я вас люби́л!
- Ната́ша: Люби́ла, Ска́ффлз! Ты – ко́шка, она́. 😄
- Ри́чард: И почему́ «вас»? Мы с тобо́й на «ты»! 📒
Ска́ффлз: Я тебя́ люблю́! Сейча́с! Дай сыр. 😼🧀
Сли́нки молчи́т. Она́ лю́бит безмо́лвно. 😺
🙇 «вы» or «ты» in a love poem?
Yesterday Pushkin said ты – «яви́лась ты» – warm, close, a happy moment.
Today he says вы – «я вас люби́л» – polite, distant: the love is in the past (люби́л), and he lets her go.
In Pushkin's time a man said вы to a lady. Today: вы to strangers and older people, ты to family and friends (День 26).
And three words with без- (without), like бессме́ртный (День 13): безмо́лвно · безнаде́жно.
🌱 The seed of the day: вы and ты carry feelings, not only grammar. A whole poem in one pronoun. ❤️
Say the poem aloud, slowly, quietly – tap the beat da-ДА.
Я вас люби́л: любо́вь ещё, быть мо́жет, 🙇
В душе́ мое́й уга́сла не совсе́м… ❤️
Я вас люби́л так и́скренно, так не́жно, 🤲
Как дай вам Бог люби́мой быть други́м. 🙏
- Say it to someone at home the warm way: «Я тебя́ люблю́!» ❤️ – and the poem way: «Я вас люби́л(а)…» 🙇 Feel the difference?
- Learn the last two lines by heart – they are the most beautiful.
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
ЛЮБИ́Л has two different Л: the first is soft (ЛЮ – the tongue high and flat), the last is hard (Л – the tongue back, like English «full»).
- soft: любо́вь, лица, лес · hard: люби́л, лампа, стол.
- Say slowly: «ль-ю-би́-л» – soft at the start, hard at the end.
- Clap on the loud syllable: я вас лю-БИ́Л 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning sit by a window, hands like bars in front of your face, and say: «Сижу́ за решёткой в темни́це сыро́й…» 🦅 – and remember День 1: высоко́, далеко́!
That is the first minute of День 20. You already know it – so День 20 starts with a win.
- Вы or ты? Point at a person or a picture – the others say вы 🙇 or ты 🤗: a teacher · a friend · a granny · a cat · the Queen · your brother.
- Без-. One says a word – the others make it «without»: наде́жда → «безнаде́жно!» · смерть → «бессме́ртный!» · сон → «бессо́нница!» (Курс 3) 😄
- Feel it. Say «Я вас люби́л» three ways: sad 😔, angry 😠, funny 😄. Which one is Pushkin?
The poem with its English translation and a song. Eight lines – you have already read all of them today! The bar at its top brings you back here.
You cannot make someone love you by force.
If somebody doesn't love you, you can't make them – let them go, like Pushkin in the poem. 🤸 Gesture: pull somebody towards you – no, it doesn't work – open your hands and let go.
Read the poem in the box above alone, slowly. Then find: ✋
🙌 Today's words: И́СКРЕННО · НЕ́ЖНО · БЕЗНАДЕ́ЖНО
- every вас / вам – how many? 🙇
- every люби́л – how many? ❤️
- the то… то… line (День 17!)
- two без- words
Answers: вас / вам – 6 · люби́л – 3 · «То ро́бостью, то ре́вностью томи́м» · безмо́лвно, безнаде́жно.
наде́жда – hope (also a name: Наде́жда, На́дя!) · наде́яться – to hope · безнаде́жно – hopelessly
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Ри́чард, я вас люби́л! – Люби́ла, Ска́ффлз! Ты – ко́шка, она́. – И почему́ «вас»? Мы с тобо́й на «ты»! – Я тебя́ люблю́! Сейча́с! Дай сыр. Сли́нки молчи́т. Она́ лю́бит безмо́лвно.
Richard, I loved you! (Scuffles's mistake: he-form, and «вас») – «Люби́ла», Scuffles! You are a cat – a she. – And why «вас»? You and I say «ты» to each other! – I love you! Now! Give me cheese. Slinky says nothing. She loves silently.
- вы – polite, distant · ты – warm, close. A poem can change only that – and the feeling changes.
- Я вас люби́л – the past: the love is over.
- без- = without: безмо́лвно, безнаде́жно, бессме́ртный.
- Past: люби́л · люби́ла · люби́ли
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English lost its «thou» (= ты) long ago, so English translations of this poem can't show the change from «ты» to «вы». Russian readers feel it at once. That is why translators say: some things you can only read in the original. 🌍 (Курс 4, День 37!)
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Poems are made to be said aloud. Rhythm and rhyme make a line easy to remember whole – the oldest memory tool there is (Rubin 1995, Memory in Oral Traditions).
- Real literature early. Short famous poems give the student the joy of reading the real thing, which keeps them going (Dörnyei 2001, motivational strategies).
- Two forms side by side. Forms that look alike are easier to tell apart when you see them together and notice the difference (Schmidt 1990, the noticing hypothesis).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
