День 20 из 40: У́зник
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – темни́ца, орёл, решётка.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: «Дава́й улети́м!» – let's fly away
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 19: hands like bars in front of your face:
«Сижу́ за решёткой в темни́це сыро́й…» 🦅
You remembered it – that is your first win today. And today «высоко́, далеко́» of День 1 come back – in Pushkin. ☝️🫡
- Tap and listen. Then do it: open both arms wide and up – fly! 🦅
- у́зник – a prisoner · темни́ца – a dark prison (тёмный – dark) · орёл – an eagle. The young eagle in the cage says to the prisoner: «Let's fly away – where it is high and far!»
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
орёл – an eagle: arms wide, a proud look 🦅 · решётка – bars: fingers crossed in front of your face #️⃣ · темни́ца – a dark prison: hands cover your eyes 🌑
👂 Listen first. Fingers like bars – then fly! Point further on every «туда́».
Вскормлённый в нево́ле орёл молодо́й,
Мой гру́стный това́рищ, маха́я крыло́м,
Крова́вую пи́щу клюёт под окно́м,
Клюёт, и броса́ет, и смо́трит в окно́,
Как бу́дто со мно́ю заду́мал одно́;
Зовёт меня́ взгля́дом и кри́ком свои́м
И вы́молвить хо́чет: «Дава́й улети́м!
Мы во́льные пти́цы; пора́, брат, пора́!
Туда́, где за ту́чей беле́ет гора́,
Туда́, где сине́ют морски́е края́,
Ска́ффлз (behind the window, watching the birds): Сижу́ за решётку!
- Ната́ша: За решёткой, Ска́ффлз! Где? – за чем? – за решёткой, за окно́м. 😄
Ска́ффлз (to the birds): Мы во́льные пти́цы! Пора́, брат, пора́! Дава́й улети́м! 🐦
- Ри́чард: Ска́ффлз, ты – ко́шка. Ты не пти́ца! 📒😄
Сли́нки смо́трит в окно́, высоко́ на шкафу́. Высоко́ сижу́ – далеко́ гляжу́! ☝️🫡
🖋️ How a poem builds a sentence
- The adjective after the noun – for the beat: в темни́це сыро́й (= в сыро́й темни́це) · орёл молодо́й · кри́ком свои́м.
- Где? – за + instrumental: за решёткой, за окно́м, за ту́чей (behind a cloud).
- Туда́, где… – there, where… – three times, further and further: the gesture of День 1 далеко́ 🫡.
- And the book forms you learned: вскормлённый, маха́я – Pushkin uses them like you now read them. 📖
🌱 The seed of the day: a poem moves words for the beat – read it as a whole sentence, not word by word. Tomorrow: a fable – and Scuffles's favourite food. 🧀
Say the last four lines aloud – point further and further on «туда́». 🫡
Мы во́льные пти́цы; пора́, брат, пора́! 🦅
Туда́, где за ту́чей беле́ет гора́, ⛰️
Туда́, где сине́ют морски́е края́, 🌊
Туда́, где гуля́ем лишь ве́тер… да я!.. 🌬️
- Where would you fly? Say it the poem way: «Туда́, где…» – «Туда́, где мо́ре!» · «Туда́, где тепло́!» 🌴
- Say «where?» with за: «Ко́шка за окно́м. Со́лнце за ту́чей. Ска́ффлз за дива́ном.»
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
ОРЁЛ sounds «арёл»: Ё is always stressed – so the О before it is weak, «а».
- решётка «ришо́тка» · вскормлённый «фскармлё-ный» · ещё «ищё».
- In books Ё is often written as Е – then you must know it: «орел» = орёл.
- Clap on the loud syllable: о-РЁЛ 👏 · ре-ШЁТ-ка 👏 · у-ле-ТИ́М 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning hold a piece of cheese in your «beak» 🧀 and caw: «Кар-р-р!» – then say: «Воро́на и Лиси́ца». Scuffles will love tomorrow. 😼
That is the first minute of День 21. You already know it – so День 21 starts with a win.
- The cage. One makes a cage with their arms #️⃣ round another. The «eagle» flaps and says: «Дава́й улети́м!» – the cage opens and both fly round the room. 🦅
- Туда́, где… Everybody adds a place, pointing further each time: «Туда́, где мо́ре!» · «Туда́, где го́ры!» · «Туда́, где тепло́!» 🫡
- За чем? Hide behind things and say where you are: «Я за две́рью! Я за дива́ном! Я за што́рой!»
Natasha's page with the poem and a video. You have read the whole poem today already! The bar at its top brings you back here.
However well you feed a wolf, he always looks to the forest.
A free animal wants to be free – like the eagle, fed in a cage but always looking at the sky. 🤸 Gesture: feed somebody with a spoon – they turn their head and look far away 🫡.
Read the poem in the box above alone, slowly. Then find: ✋

лете́ть – to fly (Курс 3) · улете́ть – to fly away ✅ · дава́й улети́м – let's fly away · полёт – a flight · лётчик – a pilot ✈️
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Сижу́ за решётку! – За решёткой, Ска́ффлз! Где? – за чем? – за решёткой, за окно́м. – Мы во́льные пти́цы! Пора́, брат, пора́! Дава́й улети́м! – Ска́ффлз, ты – ко́шка. Ты не пти́ца! Сли́нки смо́трит в окно́, высоко́ на шкафу́. Высоко́ сижу́ – далеко́ гляжу́!
I sit behind «решётку»! (Scuffles's mistake: where? – за + instrumental) – «За решёткой», Scuffles! Where? Behind what? – behind the bars, behind the window. – We are free birds! It's time, brother, it's time! Let's fly away! – Scuffles, you are a cat. You are not a bird! Slinky looks out of the window, high up on the wardrobe. High I sit – far I see!
- Poems put the adjective after the noun for the beat: в темни́це сыро́й, орёл молодо́й.
- за + instrumental = behind (где?): за решёткой, за окно́м, за ту́чей.
- Туда́, где… – there, where…
- Book forms in Pushkin: вскормлённый (День 4), маха́я (День 5).
- Ё is always stressed (often written Е).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
Pushkin wrote «У́зник» in 1822 in Кишинёв, sent far away from Petersburg for his free poems. He was not in a real prison – but he felt like one. Russian children learn this poem at school, and many sing it: it became a folk song. 🎶
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Poems are made to be said aloud. Rhythm and rhyme make a line easy to remember whole – the oldest memory tool there is (Rubin 1995, Memory in Oral Traditions).
- Real literature early. Short famous poems give the student the joy of reading the real thing, which keeps them going (Dörnyei 2001, motivational strategies).
- Old forms meet again. Finding the participle and the gerund of Group 1 inside a real poem shows the student why they learned them (Nation 2013, recycling in reading).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
