День 18 из 40: Я по́мню чу́дное мгнове́нье
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – мгнове́нье, ге́ний, красота́.
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: по́мнить – «Я по́мню чу́дное мгнове́нье» – I remember
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 17: a hand on your heart:
«Я по́мню чу́дное мгнове́нье…» ❤️
You remembered it – that is your first win today. And you can still clap «Бу́ря мгло́ю не́бо кро́ет», can't you? 🥁
- Tap and listen. Then do it: a finger on your forehead on «по́мню» 🤔 – a quick snap of the fingers on «мгнове́нье» ✨ (a moment!).
- мгнове́нье = мгнове́ние – a moment, the old poem form · чу́дное = wonderful (чу́до – a miracle).
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
мгнове́нье – a moment: snap your fingers ✨ · ге́ний – a genius, a spirit: tap your head, eyes up 💡 · красота́ – beauty: open your hands slowly, «ах!» 🌸
👂 Listen first. Tap the beat softly: da-ДА da-ДА.
Передо мно́й яви́лась ты,
Как мимолётное виде́нье,
Ска́ффлз (looking at a fish, dreamily): Я по́мню чу́дное мгнове́ние… 🐠
- Ната́ша: Мгнове́нье, Ска́ффлз! В стиха́х – мгнове́нье: мгнове́нье – виде́нье. Э́то ри́фма! 🎵
Ска́ффлз: Я по́мню чу́дное мгнове́нье: передо мно́й яви́лась… ры́бка! 😻
- Ри́чард: Э́то о любви́? 📒 – Ната́ша: Да. Э́то са́мое изве́стное ру́сское стихотворе́ние о любви́.

🎵 Old poem forms: -нье = -ние
Poets need the beat and the rhyme, so they use the short old forms:
мгнове́нье = мгнове́ние (a moment) · виде́нье = виде́ние (a vision) · вдохнове́нье = вдохнове́ние (inspiration) · упое́нье = упое́ние (delight)
In books and poems you see both. In speech and in a dictionary – -ние.
The beat today is the other way round: да-ДА да-ДА (poets call it ямб) – «Я по́м-ню чу́д-но-е мгно-ве́-нье».
🌱 The seed of the day: poems change words a little for the beat and the rhyme – мгнове́нье, not мгнове́ние. And this poem says ты – tomorrow Pushkin says вы to the woman he loves. Why? 🤔
Tap the beat – da-ДА – and say the verse aloud.
Я по́мню чу́дное мгнове́нье: 🤔✨
Передо мно́й яви́лась ты, 👐
Как мимолётное виде́нье, 💨
Как ге́ний чи́стой красоты́. 🌸
- What wonderful moment do you remember? «Я по́мню…» – one sentence. 🤔
- Say the four lines by heart – Russians love it when a foreigner knows this poem. 🇷🇺❤️
- Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.
Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
Я по́мню чу́дное мгнове́нье – da-ДА da-ДА da-ДА da-ДА da (ямб).
- Compare with yesterday: Бу́-ря мгло́-ю (ДА-da) – today: я по́м-ню чу́д-но-е (da-ДА).
- -нье sounds «-нйе»: мгнове́нье «мгнаве́н-йе», like семья́ (День 10).
- Clap: как ГЕ́-ний ЧИ́-стой КРА-со-ТЫ́ 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning say Pushkin's line quietly and politely, a little bow: «Я вас люби́л…» – and think: why «вас», not «тебя́»? 🤔
That is the first minute of День 19. You already know it – so День 19 starts with a win.
- A moment! One snaps their fingers ✨ – the others «freeze» like in a photo and say: «Я по́мню э́то мгнове́нье!» 📸
- -нье or -ние? One says a word – the others say the poem form: «мгнове́ние» – «мгнове́нье!» · «виде́ние» – «виде́нье!» · «вдохнове́ние» – «вдохнове́нье!»
- ДА-да or да-ДА? Say «Бу́ря мгло́ю» and «Я по́мню чу́дное» – the others clap the beat and show 👆👇 (strong-weak) or 👇👆 (weak-strong).
The whole poem – six verses: the first meeting, the long grey years, and the second meeting, when everything comes back to life. The bar at its top brings you back here.
Beauty will save the world.
«Крыла́тые слова́» from Dostoevsky's novel «Идио́т» (1869) – Russians say it with a smile when something beautiful makes the day better. 🌸 🤸 Gesture: open your hands slowly «красота́…», then a big circle for the world 🌍.
Read the last verse aloud, slowly – tap the beat. Pushkin's own words. ✋
🙌 Today's words: МГНОВЕ́НЬЕ · ГЕ́НИЙ · КРАСОТА́
И се́рдце бьётся в упое́нье,
И для него́ воскре́сли вновь
И божество́, и вдохнове́нье,
И жизнь, и слёзы, и любо́вь.
Count the «-нье» words: упое́нье, вдохнове́нье – and the rhyme: вновь – любо́вь. ❤️
чу́до – a miracle · чу́дный, чуде́сный – wonderful · «Чудеса́!» – How wonderful! ✨
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
Я по́мню чу́дное мгнове́нье: передо мно́й яви́лась ты, как мимолётное виде́нье, как ге́ний чи́стой красоты́. – Я по́мню чу́дное мгнове́ние… – Мгнове́нье, Ска́ффлз! В стиха́х – мгнове́нье: мгнове́нье – виде́нье. Э́то ри́фма! – Я по́мню чу́дное мгнове́нье: передо мно́й яви́лась… ры́бка! – Э́то о любви́? – Да. I remember a wonderful moment: you appeared before me like a fleeting vision, like the spirit of pure beauty. (Pushkin) – I remember a wonderful «мгнове́ние»… (Scuffles's mistake: the poem form is мгнове́нье) – «Мгнове́нье», Scuffles! In poems it is мгнове́нье: мгнове́нье – виде́нье. It's a rhyme! – I remember a wonderful moment: before me appeared… a fish! – Is it about love? – Yes. It is the most famous Russian love poem. Slinky looks at Scuffles. Miaow.
- Poem forms: -нье = -ние (мгнове́нье, виде́нье, вдохнове́нье).
- Two beats: ДА-да (хоре́й, День 17) · да-ДА (ямб, today).
- Я по́мню + accusative: я по́мню мгнове́нье, я по́мню тебя́.
- Here: ты. Tomorrow: вы. 🤔
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
Pushkin wrote it for А́нна Керн in 1825. Later the composer Гли́нка made it a song (1840) – and the woman he loved was Анна Керн's daughter, Екатери́на. One poem, two love stories. ❤️
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Poems are made to be said aloud. Rhythm and rhyme make a line easy to remember whole – the oldest memory tool there is (Rubin 1995, Memory in Oral Traditions).
- Real literature early. Short famous poems give the student the joy of reading the real thing, which keeps them going (Dörnyei 2001, motivational strategies).
- The body does the word. A gesture on every form ties the form to a movement: Macedonia · Knösche 2011.
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
