День 34 из 40: Дорого́й друг!
📚 Слова́ дня · Words of the day: 3 – дорого́й, обнима́ю, пиши́!
🗣️ Глаго́л дня · Verb of the day: обнима́ть – «Обнима́ю!» – a hug at the end of a letter 🤗
⏱ Part 1 = 15 minutes – everybody finishes it. Part 2 = more, only if you want. · 🗺️ All days
Your homework from День 33: think of a friend, a warm smile:
«Дорого́й друг!» … «Обнима́ю!» 🤗
You remembered it – that is your first win today. Those are the first and the last words of a friendly letter – today you write the middle.
- Tap and listen. Then do it: open your arms on «Дорого́й друг!» – and hug yourself on «Обнима́ю!» 🤗
- A letter to a friend says ты, is warm and short – and ends with a hug.
Say every word aloud and show it – the gesture is under the picture. Tap a word or its picture – the dictionary opens. 🔊 = listen.
дорого́й / дорога́я – dear: open your arms 👐 · обнима́ю – I hug you: hug yourself 🤗 · пиши́! – write (to me)!: write in the air ✍️
👂 Listen first. Arms open on «Дорого́й», a hug on «Обнима́ю».
Как ты? Как твой ру́сский? У нас всё хорошо́. В Ло́ндоне о́сень, а до́ма тепло́. Ри́чард у́чит ру́сский, Сли́нки спит, а Ска́ффлз опя́ть съе́ла сыр. 😄
Ты уже́ прочита́л(а) «Моро́зко» и Пу́шкина – молоде́ц! Пиши́ мне!
Обнима́ю,
твоя́ Ната́ша
Ска́ффлз (writes to the neighbour's cat): «Дорого́й Ба́рсик! …
✉️ A letter to a friend – the shape
1. The opening – Дорого́й (to a man) / Дорога́я (to a woman) / Дороги́е (to several) + the name + ! – «Дорога́я Ле́на!»
2. The middle – ты: Как ты? Как дела́? У меня́ всё хорошо́… news, a question, a joke.
3. The end – Пиши́! (write!) · Обнима́ю (I hug you) · Целу́ю (I kiss you – family, close friends) · До встре́чи! (see you!)
4. The name – твой (he) / твоя́ (she) + your name. And P.S. – one more little thing. 😉
🌱 The seed of the day: a friendly letter = дорого́й … ! – ты – обнима́ю, твой / твоя́. Tomorrow – the opposite: a letter to an office. 🙇
Say the shape of the letter aloud – arms open, then a hug.
Дорого́й друг! 👐
Как ты? У меня́ всё хорошо́. 😊
Пиши́ мне! ✍️
Обнима́ю, твоя́ Ната́ша / твой Ри́чард. 🤗
- Write a short letter to a friend – four lines: Дорого́й / Дорога́я … ! – Как ты? – У меня́… – Обнима́ю, твой / твоя́ … ✍️
- Send it! A real friend who learns Russian – or a Russian friend – will smile. 📮
- Speaking is optional – writing counts too.
Can you write it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.
Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊
Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.
ДОРОГО́Й sounds «дарАго́й»: the two О before the stress are weak – «да-ра-».
- дорого́й «дарАго́й» · обнима́ю «абнима́ю» · Ната́ша «нАта́ша».
- дорого́й (dear) and дорого́й (expensive) – the same word! Something dear to you is «expensive» to your heart. ❤️
- Clap on the loud syllable: до-ро-ГО́Й 👏 · об-ни-МА́-ю 👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning sit straight, a polite face 🙇, and say the first and the last words of an official letter: «Уважа́емый…» … «С уваже́нием…»
That is the first minute of День 35. You already know it – so День 35 starts with a win.
- Дорого́й, дорога́я, дороги́е? Point at a man, a woman, a group – the others say the opening: «Дорого́й Ри́чард!» · «Дорога́я Ната́ша!» · «Дороги́е друзья́!»
- The end of the letter. One says who the letter is for – the others choose the end: a friend → «Обнима́ю!» · granny → «Целу́ю!» · a colleague → «До встре́чи!» 🤗😘👋
- A letter in a circle. Each person adds one line to a letter to Scuffles: «Дорога́я Ска́ффлз! …» – the last one: «Обнима́ю!»
One old friend is better than two new ones.
Write to your old friends – letters keep friendship alive. ✉️ 🤗 🤸 Gesture: one finger «ста́рый», two fingers «но́вых двух» – then shake your head and hug the one.
обнима́ть – to hug · объя́тия – an embrace · обня́ть ✅ (День 7: «обняла́ ба́бушку и де́душку»)
Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊
«Dear Barsik! … Hugs, your (he-form) Scuffles.» (Scuffles's mistake: she – твоя́) – «Твоя́», Scuffles! You are a she: «твоя́ Ска́ффлз». And I am «твоя́ Ната́ша». Richard is «твой Ри́чард». – Hugs, your Scuffles. P.S. Don't send cheese – I've already eaten it! – A good letter! Short and warm. Slinky is asleep on the envelope.
- Opening: Дорого́й / Дорога́я / Дороги́е + name + !
- Middle: ты – Как ты? У меня́…
- End: Пиши́! · Обнима́ю · Целу́ю · До встре́чи!
- Name: твой (he) · твоя́ (she) + name · P.S.
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English letters begin «Dear Lena» – Russian «Дорога́я Ле́на!» with an exclamation mark, not a comma. And English ends «Love, Natasha» – Russian «Обнима́ю, твоя́ Ната́ша» – the «your» is always there. 🤗
🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way
- Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
- Writing from a model. Students write better when they first read a short model and see its parts – the opening, the body, the closing (Hyland 2003, genre-based writing).
- Style is part of meaning. Knowing which word fits which person and place (sociolinguistic competence) is one of the main parts of real language skill (Canale · Swain 1980).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
