🖋️ А. С. Пу́шкин, «Евге́ний Оне́гин»
Письмо́ Татья́ны (the beginning and the end)

Purple: презре́ньем – the poem form -нье (День 18) · храня́ – keeping, a 〰️〰️ gerund (День 5). You know them!
  • Ска́ффлз (with a pencil): Я к вы пишу́!
  • Ната́ша: К вам, Ска́ффлз! К кому́? – к вам, к тебе́, к нему́. 😄
  • Ска́ффлз: Я к вам пишу́, Ри́чард… чего́ же бо́ле? Сы́ру! 🧀
  • Ри́чард: Э́то не письмо́ Татья́ны – э́то письмо́ Ска́ффлз! 📒😄
  • Сли́нки кладёт ла́пку на конве́рт – как печа́ть. 🐾

✉️ How a letter speaks

  • писа́ть к + dative (old, poetic) = писа́ть + dative (today): «Я к вам пишу́» = «Я пишу́ вам».
  • A letter has a beginning, a middle and an end: Tatyana begins «Я к вам пишу́…» and ends «Конча́ю!» (I finish!).
  • вы in a love letter – polite, a little afraid (День 19). In the middle of the letter Tatyana once even switches to ты – and back. 💌
  • In 1820 a girl did not write first to a man. Tatyana's letter was very brave – that is why Russians love her.

🌱 The seed of the day: a letter has a shape. Tomorrow you write your own letter – to a friend: «Дорого́й друг!» ✍️

🔁 Повторя́йте · Repeat

Write in the air ✍️ and say the first four lines aloud.

Я к вам пишу́ – чего́ же бо́ле? ✍️
Что я могу́ ещё сказа́ть? 🤷
Тепе́рь, я зна́ю, в ва́шей во́ле 🤲
Меня́ презре́ньем наказа́ть. 😔

🗣️ Ва́ша о́чередь! · Your turn!
  • Start a letter the Tatyana way – to anybody: «Я к вам пишу́…» or the modern way: «Я пишу́ вам, потому́ что…» ✍️
  • Learn the first two lines by heart – every Russian knows them.
  • Speaking is optional – listening and doing count too.

Can you say it without looking? – Молоде́ц! Go to the tap quiz.

✔ Прове́рьте себя́ · Check yourself

Guess, then tap. A wrong tap is a guess. 😊

1 😾 Scuffles: «Я к вы пишу́!» How is it right?

Я к ВАМ пишу́!
Я к ВАС пишу́!
Я к ВА́МИ пишу́!

2 «чего́ же бо́ле?» = …

what more (can I say)?
why so much?
where are you?

3 Who wrote «Евге́ний Оне́гин»?

Пу́шкин
Ле́рмонтов
Че́хов

4 «храня́» is which book form?

〰️〰️ a gerund: keeping (День 5)
👈 a participle of the past (День 3)
✅👉 first this, then that (День 6)

5 Why was Tatyana's letter brave?

A girl did not write first to a man in 1820.
It was very long.
She wrote it in English.

Хорошо́! Молоде́ц! Two small things left – two minutes.

🔊 Звук дня · Sound of the day: Г sounds В in -ого / -его

ЧЕГО́ sounds «чиво́»: in the endings -ого / -его the Г sounds В.

  • чего́ «чиво́» · его́ «йиво́» · моего́ «маиво́» · ничего́ «ничиво́» · сего́дня «сиво́дня».
  • But in other words Г is Г: голо́дный, дорого́й.
  • Clap on the loud syllable: я к вам пи-ШУ́ – че-ГО́ же БО́-ле 👏👏👏. 30 seconds, every day.
🏠 Дома́шняя рабо́та · Homework – one small thing

Tomorrow morning think of a friend and say the first words of a letter, a warm smile: «Дорого́й друг!» (or «Дорога́я подру́га!») – and the last word: «Обнима́ю!» 🤗
That is the first minute of День 34. You already know it – so День 34 starts with a win.

✔ Часть 1 гото́ва! Part 1 done.
You may stop here – see you tomorrow: День 34 · Дорого́й друг! ▶
Часть 2 · Е́сли хоти́те · +25 мину́тPart 2 – only if you want more. Nothing here is needed for tomorrow.
🤸 Жестова́я игра́ · Gesture game
  1. The letter chain. Pass a sheet of paper round – each person writes (or says) one line of a letter «Я к вам пишу́…», the last one: «Конча́ю!» ✍️
  2. К кому́? One points at a person – the others say «Я пишу́ к …»: «к вам!» · «к тебе́!» · «к нему́!» · «к ней!»
  3. Brave or not? Act Tatyana writing – afraid 😳, then brave 💪, then «Конча́ю!» – hand on the heart.
🖋️ Стихотворе́ние це́ликом · the whole poem

The whole letter, as Pushkin wrote it in «Евге́ний Оне́гин», with a video. The bar at its top brings you back here.

📚 Words of the poem – tap to open. You don't need every word. 👇
чего́ же бо́ле – what more · в ва́шей во́ле – in your power · презре́нье – contempt · наказа́ть – to punish · несча́стная до́ля – an unhappy fate · ка́пля жа́лости – a drop of pity · оста́вить – to leave · молча́ть – to be silent · стыд – shame · страх – fear · замира́ть – to freeze · честь – honour · пору́ка – a guarantee · сме́ло – bravely · вверя́ть – to trust · перече́сть – to read again
🦉 Посло́вица дня · proverb of the day · 👂 listen and read
Бума́га всё сте́рпит.

Paper will bear anything.
You can write anything on paper – it never says no. Tatyana wrote what she could never say aloud. ✉️ 🤸 Gesture: write on a flat hand, the hand stays calm.

Answers: вам, ва́шей, вы, вы, ва́ша · бо́ле · презре́ньем · храня́ · «Конча́ю!»

🔗 Одно́ сло́во – мно́го слов · one word – many words
писа́ть – to write · письмо́ – a letter · писа́тель – a writer (Курс 3) · пи́сьменный стол – a desk · пропи́си – a copybook (Курс 1!)
Оне́гин – people say the name comes from the river Оне́га in the north of Russia 🗺️ (like Ле́нский, his friend in the novel – from the river Ле́на)

Just look and smile – you don't have to learn these now. 😊

📖 Текст уро́ка · The text – open it only after you can say it without reading

Я к вы пишу́! – К вам, Ска́ффлз! К кому́? – к вам, к тебе́, к нему́. – Я к вам пишу́, Ри́чард… чего́ же бо́ле? Сы́ру! – Э́то не письмо́ Татья́ны – э́то письмо́ Ска́ффлз! Сли́нки кладёт ла́пку на конве́рт – как печа́ть.

I write «к вы»! (Scuffles's mistake: к + dative) – «К вам», Scuffles! To whom? – to you (вам), to you (тебе́), to him (нему́). – I write to you, Richard… what more? Some cheese! – That's not Tatyana's letter – it's Scuffles's letter! Slinky puts her paw on the envelope – like a stamp.

💡 Пра́вило · Rule
  • писа́ть к + dative (poems) = писа́ть + dative: Я пишу́ вам.
  • A letter: beginning – middle – end («Конча́ю!»).
  • Poem forms again: бо́ле = бо́льше, презре́ньем (-нье), храня́ (gerund).
  • -ого / -его: Г = В (чего́ «чиво́»).
ударе́ние – словарь ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).

ЛО́НДОН – словарь ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – словарь ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.

The sign is only a help for learners. Russian books don't print it, and you don't write it.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
😄 Для тех, кто говори́т по-англи́йски · For English speakers

«Евге́ний Оне́гин» is a novel in verse – a whole novel, every line a poem. Tchaikovsky made it an opera (1879), and Tatyana's letter is its most famous song. For Russians, Tatyana is the ideal Russian woman: brave, honest and true. 💌

🔬 Почему́ так · Why this way

  • Yesterday's homework first. Remembering without looking is one of the best-proven tools: Agarwal · Nunes · Blunt 2021.
  • Poems are made to be said aloud. Rhythm and rhyme make a line easy to remember whole – the oldest memory tool there is (Rubin 1995, Memory in Oral Traditions).
  • Real literature early. Short famous poems give the student the joy of reading the real thing, which keeps them going (Dörnyei 2001, motivational strategies).
  • Writing from a model. Students write better when they first read a short model and see its parts – the opening, the body, the closing (Hyland 2003, genre-based writing).
  • The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
