- A formal letter says Вы – with a capital В – and ends with respect, not with a hug. 🙇

🙇 A formal letter – the shape
1. The opening – Уважа́емый (a man) / Уважа́емая (a woman) + и́мя + о́тчество + ! – «Уважа́емая А́нна Серге́евна!» · not knowing the name: «Уважа́емые господа́!» (Dear Sirs)
2. The middle – Вы, Вас, Вам, Ваш with a capital В (one person). Прошу́ Вас + verb (please…) · Сообща́ю Вам, что… (I inform you that…)
3. The end – Заране́е благодарю́ (thank you in advance) · С уваже́нием, + full name + the date.
No «приве́т», «обнима́ю», «твой», «спс», jokes – (День 25, 28!). 🙅

- Write a short formal letter – to a hotel, a school, a doctor: «Уважа́емый / Уважа́емая … ! Прошу́ Вас … Заране́е благодарю́. С уваже́нием, …» ✍️
- Then the same thing to a friend – «Дорого́й … !» – feel the difference. 🤗🙇

УВАЖА́ЕМЫЙ – five syllables, only one is loud: у-ва-ЖА́-е-мый. The Е after А sounds «йи»: «уважа́йимый».
- с уваже́нием – the little word с joins the next word: say «суваже́нием» as one word.
- Long official words are slow and clear – but only one syllable is loud.
- Clap: у-ва-ЖА́-е-мый 👏 · с у-ва-ЖЕ́-ни-ем 👏 · за-ра-НЕ́-е бла-го-да-РЮ́ 👏👏. 30 seconds, every day.
Tomorrow morning point at yourself and say three things about you: «Меня́ зову́т… Я живу́ в… Я люблю́…» 👤
That is the first minute of День 36. You already know it – so День 36 starts with a win.
- Bow or hug? One says who the letter is for – the others show 🙇 (formal) or 🤗 (friendly) and say the opening: a bank → «Уважа́емые господа́!» · granny → «Дорога́я ба́бушка!» · a teacher → «Уважа́емая Мари́я Ива́новна!»
- Make it formal. One says a friendly line – the next makes it formal: «Приве́т!» → «Уважа́емый…!» · «Пиши́!» → «Прошу́ Вас отве́тить.» · «Обнима́ю» → «С уваже́нием».
- The capital В. Write «Вы» in the air with a big В – in a letter to one person it is always big. ✍️
As the greeting, so the answer.
Write politely – and you get a polite answer. 🙇 (Как ау́кнется, так и откли́кнется – День 10!) 🤸 Gesture: a bow to somebody – they bow back.

«Hugs, your Scuffles!» (Scuffles's mistake: a friendly ending in a formal letter) – Scuffles! This is a formal letter: «С уваже́нием» – yours sincerely. And not «your» – we don't say «ты» to a doctor! – Yours sincerely, Scuffles. P.S. Cheese is not «too much»! – Now the letter has a P.S. from a cat… The vet will laugh. Slinky sits quietly. Nobody is taking her to the vet.
- Opening: Уважа́емый / Уважа́емая + и́мя + о́тчество + ! · «Уважа́емые господа́!»
- Middle: Вы, Вас, Вам, Ваш – capital В · Прошу́ Вас + verb.
- End: Заране́е благодарю́. С уваже́нием, + full name + date.
- No приве́т, обнима́ю, твой, спс, jokes.
ударе́ние – stress – shows the syllable you say louder and longer, just like in English: LUN-dun (London), TEL-ih-fohn (telephone).
ЛО́НДОН – the stress is on the first syllable, as in English. But Russians say a real, round о: LON-d’n, not LUN-dun. The second о comes after the stress, so it is short and weak (like the a in sofa).
ТЕЛЕФО́Н – not like the English TEL-ih-fohn: the stress is on the last syllable: ti-li-FON (е without stress sounds like a short и). That is why we mark the stress.
🎯 Why does о sound like а?
English formal letters begin «Dear Sir or Madam» – the same «dear» as to a friend! Russian has two different words: дорого́й (friends) and уважа́емый (offices). And Russians end with «С уваже́нием» – «with respect» – where English says «Yours sincerely». 🙇

- Writing from a model. Students write better when they first read a short model and see its parts – the opening, the body, the closing (Hyland 2003, genre-based writing).
- Style is part of meaning. Knowing which word fits which person and place (sociolinguistic competence) is one of the main parts of real language skill (Canale · Swain 1980).
- The cat makes the mistakes. Scuffles says it wrong – the student laughs and is never the one who is wrong.
